It's really nice to hear that some households are shifting to better channels and serials. But I just have to disagree on the point that regressive TV soaps are dying. Regressive TV soaps are easily getting 3+ trps while good progressive ones struggle to cross even 2+. And the ones that do, have to include lots of melodrama to reach there. Sony TV serials barely cross 1+ despite providing the most variety and good quality serials now.

And your point about sex being deliberately included is totally valid. Many webseries are ruined by this emphasis on sex when it's totally unnecessary and disrupts the flow of the storyline.

Well to be honest I don't even know names of.any new shows and don't follow these channels..So achhe shows bhi miss ho jaate hai kyunki unke baare me pata hi nahi hai..It's kinda like their reputation is ruined for me so don't even think of giving it a chance. Only time I switch to sony, zee, colors or star is to follow reality shows.. Except BB

While I agree that ITV shows seem to be catered more towards Indian housewives, there is almost a 20 year gap between the rise of Ekta's saas-bahu dramas and now. 20 years meaning a bigger youth population that complains about crap ITV content on social networking sites. Why don't we see more of the influence of this youth population on TRPs- ie. rejecting bad shows and accepting good shows? Especially since TRPs are based on urban areas.

The ones who crib about quality content on social media, whether Bollywood or television are in minority. It's not only the housewives who watch daily soaps, even young girls watch it. While Bollywood movies are mostly watched by young men. They are the primary audience, and no, they too don't go by content. Otherwise a misogynist film like Kabir Singh won't have ended up being Blockbuster.

That is kind of true. I recall seeing a few fangirls' tweets that they were going to watch a serial because the lead pair is hot despite the serial being a product of EK's. Good looking couples and chemistry are used to excuse the lack of content in ITV serials. And even bad acting too.

Which good movie was successful? Is there a shift in audience?

I do watch daily soaps, mostly out of habit while having dinner or cooking, Tarak Mehta show is one such habit for most Indians

3. Something trps is not high( highest show trp) .Mostly youth prefer watching web shows now and small number of aunties watch TV n few youngsters watch for favourite actors .

This! I know younger girls and even men who pretend to make fun of these soaps to look cool in front of others but still watch and enjoy them. There is no different audience. The same audience goes and watches movies during the weekend.

These tacky shows have figured out how to get people addicted by letting them ship couples and giving them a daily dose of gossip and fights. The same people then go and watch Simba, Kabir Singh, and Salman's dumb movies. Occasionally a movie like Andhadhun will work but the audience for it is still small and nobody watches these movies on repeat on TV or anything.

Recently, I watched Big Little Lies because people were talking about it so much and it's also just a soap opera with a big budget. It's like watching Days of Our Lives with better actors and high production values. People have fallen for it and if they make more shows like this, they will work too. Telenovelas are huge in the Spanish speaking world too. So it's not just Indians. All people around the world like trashy shows and trashy movies because they're fun and easy to watch and addictive and you don't need to tax your brain.

Relatively good movies like Andhadhun, Uri, Hichki, Kedernath and Badhaai Ho would have previously bombed due to lack of star power. Now such movies are being recognised and did well box office wise. And many of the Khans' movies (with bad plotlines) tanked the last few years when they previously would have done well solely based on star power.

Everyone is assuming that audience is shifting because Khan movies are tanking and these movies are tanking because they are not able to collect 500cr, Salman's last Eid release collected 200 crore but was a flop because it was a Salman movie.

Uri was based on surgical strike, BJP got 303 seats for this, it had to do well, but Uri with Salman would have been a hit with 244cr because it didn't cross 300cr.

Budget to collection ratio is deciding fate of movies but not the audience, there is a decline in movie watchers, we can watch everything on phone now.

Andhadhun net gross in India is 73 cr

Zero Net gross is 88 cr

Bollywood and television have different audience. Bollywood's primary audience are men and daily soaps primary audience are women. And that's obvious by which gender takes the centre stage in both mediums.
