Has anyone here taken a look at the Pakistani movie Cake on Netflix? I watched it yesterday and fell in love with its sublime storytelling. A very lovely take on relationships and what it takes to be a family in times of crisis. If anyone's seen it, I'd like to discuss the film.

I saw it in theatres. I really liked the way they showed the link between urban and rural. How despite living in cities some people are held back by their traditions.

The elder sister having to ha e put her life on back Burner while the younger one escapes to take a break... the elders ones pent up resentment. It was done really nicely esp by Amina. She did much better than sanam saeed.

Also making the servant take the fall for their action. This is such a rural Sindh thing and for once their showed a rural setting that wasn't Punjab. Loved the Sindhi background of the movie.

Also likes how they didn't show families with a strict urban lens. It was far more. Living in cities yet still rooted to their complex rural background

I totally agree. The link between the urban and rural and the fondness and longing that the family has for their rural setup despite the starkly different environment that they live in the city has been beautifully shown.

The tension between the sisters was so palpable from the very first hug they share, especially from Zarina's side. Yet, amidst the tension you see different layers to their relation (I loved the egg-hurling scene 😆). I 100% agree that Amina especially did an amazing job as the bitter, suppressed sister who had to deal with all the crap while Zara lived a comfortable life abroad. I like that they didn't show her being totally fine with her life after the sacrifices that the family had to make for Zara's sake.

I loved the final confrontation scene (SPOILER) where her patience finally snaps and she demands their father to spill the beans to Zara and calls Zara out when she starts taking the moral high ground (understandably so) as to whether she was or would be now ready to go to jail.

I was pleasantly surprised at the Sindhi setup. It was a nice change from the usual Punjabiness that I have seen in Pakistani dramas.

Also, how beautiful was the cinematography of the show? Such eye-pleasing shots. I even loved the acting of the man who plays yhe father. Soft, emotional, loving who is fed up with the attitudes of all his three kids he loves dearly. The movie reminded me of Piku and Kapoor and sons. Sublime storytelling that leaves you feeling fresh.

Yes I watched it

It was very realistic and the twist was quite unexpected

It reminded me of the craziness of every family

However I am not sure why it was called cake

In my opinion, it is called Cake because of the several layers the family and its story have. Looks a certain way from the outside, but is very different from the inside with several layers just like a Cake.

Very realistic and almost makes one feel like taking a peek into the life of a real family.

I liked how they showed that despite living in a metropolitan city with modern mindsets, when it came to saving their owns neck, they were ok with their servant (that too from minority) taking the fall of their daughters actions. They led a urban life enjoying all the liberties that came with it but still they resorted to feudal mindset.

I agree, they didn't show her as a sacrificial angel who was ok with what she had to do. She loved her sister and made sacrifices for her family. She wasn't ok with it but at the same time didn't love them any less. You can still love your family without thinking they are perfect

I liked the music too, esp the Sindhi background score. I don't understand Sindhi and I'm 100% Punjabi lol but it was a nice break from the stereotypical punjab k gaon and mutyars 😂 Usually in Pak movies/dramas when they have to show urban modern people, they show Karachi and when have to show loud, desi side lets show Punjab 🙄

The movie reminded me of kapoor and sons, but has a more complex realistic background instead of a family breaking over a stolen book.

I liked the ending too, how they subtly showed that zarina ended up with the Christian househelp and didn't give a damn about the gossipy aunties

Watched the trailer. Reminds me of this great Israeli film called 'The Cakemaker'.

I've never watched a Pakistani film before, but this seems like a good entry point.

Why is everyone suddenly obsessed with the title Cake?

I think Esha Deol had a film called Cake and so did Jen Aniston. There's a Paki film by this name? Whom does it star?
