A well written show or historically inaccurate?

First 2 episodes and I must say it is well written and well paced. A bunch of talented and well-recognized actors and they're all really nailing their characters so far.

The first episode was good, the only thing I didn't like was the VFX tiger. That was quite obviously fake and it seemed that at times it would grow bigger and then become small again. And why were its eyes glass-like? That whole scene was a bit too much for me. The way Akbar flew in and hit the tiger, the aankhon se darana, and all. But it was also a good intro for Akbar, so I'll let it pass.

A few things that I'm confused about though from the second episode (and bear with me because I'm not too familiar with history, hence the question mark in the title):
  • Is Aruna Irani playing Maham Anga or Akbar's real mother? Because I thought Maham Anga was sent away and then died even before Salim's birth, but the styling and the characterization seems reminiscent of Maham Anga.
  • Wasn't Jodha bai Akbar's first wife? Then why is Ruqaiya Begum saying she's the oldest rani?
  • If I'm not mistaken, the name Anarkali was bestowed upon Shifu much later in life, when she got older, like in the teen years.
Overall though I liked the episodes and the show so far. Let's see how it goes on from here.

EDIT: I've edited the title because now I'm starting to have serious doubts on the history. Even I know some Indian history (for all my Canadian upbringing), and there are some very blatantly obvious mistakes here.

  • I think Aruna Irani is playing Akbar's mother since Salim called her daadi jaan or something.
  • Ruqaiyya was Akbar's first wife and chief consort
  • I don't know much about Anarkali but in the show they made it a bit too in-your-face by naming her in a garden full of anar (pomegranates) 😆

Ruqaiya was Akbar's first wife, they were married before Humayun died .
Salima was his second wife, she was the widow of Bairam khan.
Jodha came third.

Yeah, The dressing is like maham anga. So is the character.

The dialogue writer doesn't know anything about history I suppose.
Akbar isn't calling Salim shiekhu
Jodha is referred to as maharani
Akbar is being called badshah and maharaj when he is shehenshah.
Bad urdu dialect.
No queens called each other aapa!!

^ I noticed the writing mistakes as well. As far as I knew he was always referred to as Jal-ul-din Shahenshah Mohammad Akbar when his name was called out in full. And Jodha bai was referred to as Malaika-e-Hindustan Jodha Bai.

For Aruna Irani's character, then that is historically inaccurate as well because Maham Anga was first banished from the kingdom and then died before Salim's death. That leads to the question then - what else is historically inaccurate?

Now a few mistakes that I noticed today and that I missed earlier:

  • Didn't Anarkali have a sister as well? Also wasn't her real name Nadira, not Saifu, or is Saifu just a nickname?
  • I thought Anarkali's mother was always a dasi in Akbar's palace? Even before Salim's birth. Then why are they coming from Faras?
  • Abu Fazal was a poet right? Not a warrior. So why is he being shown a warrior here?
  • And where are Birbal and the other navratans?
  • They are showing Anarkali and Salim having friendship since childhood, but I thought they met after Salim returned from several years of training.
  • Like mentioned, why isn't Salim being referred to as Sheikhu Baba? Not even once has Akbar said this affectionate term yet!

There no historical record of Anarkali's ral name just like there is no record of Salim 's mother who was refered as Mariam-U-Zain in historical record she ws hindu a rajput but her real name is not know was it Heera Harka or Jodha no one now when a queen's name is the other Anarakali was maid so Nadira or Saifu doesn't matter
No historically data available so can't say
Abar Fazal was his chief adviser not a poet that wasTansen who was an poet and singer
They have not shown all the other Navratans till now but I expect them to do it soon as taht will introduce Jodha's family too and probably even Maan Bai Salim's first wife
Probably they knew each other as many palace there have been stories of Josha have have a maid whon was her friend since childhood
I am not why they are not doing that because any show or movie made on that era focused on Akbar specailly has Salim mentioned as Sheikhu only. Even Akbar mother called him sheikhu not salim

^ Thank you for that. I guess that means that as long as it comes to Salim-Anarkali, the writers have creative freedom as long as they get the other parts of history correct.

Okay my questions for today:
  1. Was Ruqaiya really this conniving? I mean she used a child today to fulfill her means. Not only that, but did she really want Salim dead so badly?
  2. Was Salim sent away for misbehaving with Abu Fazal (or any of the other navratans) or was it because he was inebriated and becoming wayward? I remember reading some time back that at a very young age, Salim went down the wrong path: drinking and rakassas. So which is it?

Historical record in india has no name of anarkali

But travellers like William Finch have mentioned her in their letters and book on india travels(you can google and read)

I think Abul Fazl wrote Akbarnama and he was Akbars friend

Poet was Abdul rahim Khan e Khana he wrote Rahim ke dohe

You must have heard Rahim ke dohe like Kabir ke dohe

So that Rahim was Abdul Rahim, Bairam Khans son

Birbal was chief advisor and minister of Akbar (may be like Prime Minister)
Tansen was singer

No one can say for sure how Ruqaiah was as no book mentions her character. Only Salim says Ruqaiah loves his son Khurram more than her own child(as if) in jehangirnama.

But Salima and Ruqaiah were close both to Akbar and Salim and to Shah jahan(khurram) later. Ruqaiah never want Salim dead in history, she had no children so she must have treated Salim like an own son. But the fact that she asked Khurram as a 6 days baby to be brought up by her rather than his own mother Jodha Bai shows that somewhere she was a bit selfish. Khurram aka Shah jahan was Salim and Jodha Bais only child born after many years of marriage but Akbar gave baby to Ruqaiah for upbringing. Shah jahan was a ruthless person, he killed his two three brothers and all his brothers sons to come to throne. Nur Jahan aka Meherunissa was maid for Khurram and worked for Ruqaiah. Babar, Humayun, Akbar all had rebellious brothers but none killed their step brothers or their kids but Shah jahan did, aurangzeb followed and than it became norm.

Salim did not misbehave with anyone nor he drank wine or took hafim etc and hence sent to war field by Akbar, thats all imaginative story. He was sent at age 8-9 years to war field as was norm in mughal princes. Murad went at 12-13 years and daniyal was one who went late, at 15-16 years. So every mughal prince went to war as a kid not only Salim. Salim went young age than his siblings because he is elder thats all. Actually Akbar was supposed to go to war and he had epilepsy attack and seizure once when he went hunting so Salim went to war instead of Akbar that time.

Salim first drank wine when he was 18-19 years old, he was lost in some desert and hungry and thirsty and his friend had got wine along. So he gave wine to Salim and first time Salim drank wine. He took Hafim in his 30s because he was drinking 40 glass wine everyday and one day collapsed, doctor said if you drink so much you will die in few months. So he reduced wine to 10-20 glasses and instead took hafim to forgo side effects of withdrawal symptom. That was in his 30s not as a kid or teenager. That is again imaginary story of script writer. You can read all this in jehangirnama, Salim only wrote all details. By the way Salim banned wine and hafim in mughal empire after becoming emperor although he drank it. So he understood bad effects of addiction on health too. None of his kids and sons were also addicted to wine/hafim, he did not allow so yes he knew that drinking wine/hafim was bad for health.

Hope that clarifies the doubts on Salims addictions
