Prologue

Three Great Emperors had toiled hard to build the vast and flourishing legacy of the 'Mughal Empire', keeping relative peace by unifying its Mughals and Hindus. However; by mid 1600s, cracks began to appear in its solid foundations. Insecurities crept in through the gaps, widening the gulfs between the two religions once again.

With the old Emperor becoming too feeble to take charge and his jealous successors remaining preoccupied with expansion and power, the damage was never repaired. Not surprising then that new rebellions arose every day. Violence escalated, claiming many innocent lives.

Yet; in the midst of such turmoil and peril, there bloomed a beautiful story - much like a lone flower blossoming upon the steepest edges of a cliff - a story of love, of sacrifice and honour!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Forced to flee from her motherland, the one home she knew... forced to leave behind her people, for whom, she was their only hope...forced to grievously abandon the last rites of her loved one while the flames on the pyre were still ablaze...the orphaned heiress of 16 overcame grief and many shortcomings, as she embarked on a long dangerous path... setting out to seek help and support, for her people and her lands...

Till a chance stay with a complete stranger would change the course of those very plans forever!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Being the most shrewd, determined and unforgiving of the lot meant he was formidable... a force to be reckoned with... it also meant he could have owned it all - riches, power, women and fame... but, he fancied none of it...

As a recluse with simple tastes, the rich life held no real appeal... power didn't tempt him... women didn't interest him... his passion was work and his only family were a few loyal friends... he had decided that he wanted little else in life...

Till a chance visit from a complete stranger would change that decision forever!

We all know who hates whom the most from the HBAS character- list😆

So, WHO would be your FAVOURITE supporting character from HBAS? And why? There must be something... at least, one particular gesture/thought of theirs that must have tipped the scales in their favour. What is it?😳

Apart from being an interesting discussion (because I'm hoping the answers would be varied) It'd give both, me and the other readers here wonderful insight into what we - as individuals - admire/enjoy most.

As for answers,
1) Please pick ONLY one character
2) And no, you CANNOT pick Akbar or Heera, of course!😆

My answer would be Durga! Love every damn thing about her. ❤️ She only properly stayed for three chapters, but she bowled me over with her wit, charm, courage and overall Durganess'. That's one character I'll never truly forget. Also, kudos to you for creating someone so amazing in so little time! ⭐️

after durga, it's certainly gauri .

40+ chapters, and not once I felt like questioning her actions or conduct - sensible, far sighted, intelligent, emotional in the right amount, loving friend yet a steadfast guardian, dutiful and fiercely loyal - everything about her is a favourite 😃

All the supporting characters are awesome,di..every character has been shaped wonderfully by you.Since you are asking for only one,it's Mohan Banna!!⭐️

If there's anyone's entry that was worth whistle-poding,other than AMK,it's Mohan Banna's for sure,for me.And I'm referring to the below scene,di.He was a hero,here.

I had never thought he was this powerful,di.But the power he exudes, which silenced the whole town, his strength and loyalty,sharp-wit..everything makes him my favourite supporting character!😃

You have written the scene so beautifully that even though it's not the first time, felt the same emotions I had felt during first read!👏⭐️

It was as if the crowds had abruptly run short of sticks and stones to throw - for the missiles weren't flying anymore. The laughter of the soldiers faded away. The taunts and yells dried out swiftly, as did the tears on most wet cheeks. And the gossiping ladies had forgotten that they'd been gossiping at all.

Even the men of Ustaad were forced to spin around and take a good look.

His footfall was not that of a typical leader's - it was uneven.

Tuc.

Crunch.

Tuc.

Crunch.

As he arrived amongst the crowd - neither were his shoulders the broadest, nor did his head stand out as the tallest. So, it was difficult to fathom how such a man's stature would silence the brattiest of youths or lower the glares of the boldest men.

But that was Mohan banna - the grand man of Parnagarh who'd been in-charge of its well-being in many ways, for more than two decades now.

With a smile on his face, he would buy the street urchins sweets every week. And his voice rarely ever rose from impatience when dealing with petty thieves or miscreants.

But only a fool would mistake any of that for leniency. For Parnagarh knew that the man who kept the place safe at night, the one who'd thumped swords in the hands of guards as senior as Daya and Bajrang, was not someone you messed with. Not even on a 'good' day.

Thus, it was little surprise that the web of fury that'd coloured his eyes red and the baritone of his pitch that'd sent the Earth under their feet rippling, could silence a town full of people today. Maybe that was why the Ustaad had chosen him, amongst hundreds of other friendly Parnagarhis, to confide his deepest secret.

'I learnt of the developments late... and obviously...' he smirked, pointing at the stump of his leg 'it takes me time to hobble up the hills on one foot... BUT... once here, what do I see... that THIS is how my fellow-men treat a lady they've known for 17 years. 17 YEARS! A lady who's served them as a daughter, and a sister, no less!'

It was a good while before anyone from the crowd found the nerve to speak up

'W... we did ask her several questions...'

'We waited for explanations... but she gave us none...'

'Well...' he flicked his palm 'did it not occur to any of you that maybe she does not have the time to explain her entire story - seeing how a royal decree has come from the capital, summoning her? Or, did it not cross your minds that she might be too disturbed, to deal with her own people hating on her - seeing how she has the safety of her Sahib - our Mansabdar - to worry about?'

Raising the crutch, he pointed its end to the group that'd been most vocal in their humiliation of her 'And why is it you need an explanation anyway? Unlike other high-born noblewoman, our baisa has been stepping into our humble homes... with NO care for class nor caste... WHATEVER the hour of night... to tend to our sick families... to help our wives birth babies - is it not testament enough of her character?'

Acknowledging them with nothing beyond an unconvinced sigh, Mohan banna eventually approached the palanquin bearers who'd been refusing to transport their mistress. Within a single fist, he grabbed their collars and shoved them in her direction, each stumbling on top of another. 'Go with Bajrang and Daya... go serve the baisa... serve her as you would serve your own sister...'

He then offered the Lady his final salute. 'You may leave, baisa... you have other pressing matters to tend to... allow me to talk some sense into these people... and then I'll follow you to the capital... if needs be, I'll travel the hundreds of miles on this one leg... but I'll be there...'

Interesting 😆
Quite difficult answer...because everyone is best.
Every character has their own importance ...

Durga, chachajaan and Mohan banna already mention. 👏

So I will go with Gauri 😳
She is more than maid or friend to Heera and Durga .
When Durga alive Gauri take care of both baisas as maid and give advice like true friend but after Durga death she became like mother to Heera...Who can scold her if she go wrong and take stand with her if she need her most.
Her opinion and advice matter to Heera that's why heera somewhere scare of her also.

In this scene we could figure out Gauri true selfless nature...She genuinely care and Love her like a mother.

Gauri hugged her friend tightly. 'All I'd wanted, was to see you both married... living happily with your families...' For whatever reason, the tears didn't seem to want to stop. Maybe it was this ugly farewell from Bansi that was eroding her confidence faster than she could rebuild it. Or maybe it was something else, ominous. 'You sisters have been unlucky in life... and you both have been unlucky in love too!'

Heera could still sense panic in her friend's gestures. So, setting aside her own jitters, she came up with another positive reminder to comfort her maid 'Don't lose hope... there IS someone looking out for us, from up there... gifting us one saving grace amidst this hardship...' she paused 'I presumed Manswar would be our greatest support... and I confided my plans in the messages I'd sent to the Kunwar... thankfully, those scrolls never reached Manswar... if not, who knows what the Kunwar of Manswar might've done with those letters?'

'You're right' Gauri agreed slowly 'maybe there IS someone looking out for us'

Supporting Character...

'Supporting' may mean 'supporting' the main characters..It may also mean supporting and steering the story in the proper direction..
Of the many characters who are given a place slightly less than the main ones, viz., Akbar and Heera, we have Azeez, Ibrahim, Sayeed, Chacha Jaan on Akbar's side and Gauri, Bindhiya, Mohan Banna, Kakasa..on Heera's side.
Durga is 'mentioned' in the novel.. Her entire adventure is told as a flashback. Though her sacrifice for the Parnagarh lands and her people carries the story forward to a large extent, she is not the living character, and thus , in my opinion, she is not counted as a character at all. If we do, we need to consider Akbarkhan's mother as well. If she had not left her little son in the lurch, there ever won't be a 'stranger' behind whom Heera could hide!

What about the Shehzaade? Is he a main character or a supporting one? Or Mahendar? Mahendar is the villain, and he is like the salt which adds taste to the cooking..No (hi)story is complete without a villain..So, he is not in a supporting role..On the contrary , he is on par with the main ones.
That leaves the Shehzaade..Wherever he appears in the novel, there is some interesting thing happening. In the first chapter, it is told that he was instrumental in sending the mission led by Khalil, to bring the farmaan from the Parnagarh secret chest.
Next, in the encounter of the Ustaad with the Shehzaade, we get a shock and surprise when we come to know who Akbarkhan is.
And the very important turning point in the story is the meeting of AMK with the Shehzaade, when he hands over the farmaan to him and gets in return the nomination of the title 'mansabdar' and the permission to marry Heera.

And the presence of the Shehzaade is felt throughout the story as an undercurrent force shaping AMK as a man, a soldier, an Ustaad and a responsible intelligence officer.
Shehzaade gets the best supporting place in the story..

Periyamma.

Ok, I am going out on a limb here. Author Sahiba wanted us to pick ONE favourite supporting character much like in awards shows where the trophy is handed out to only one of those nominated in that category. The only difference being that in shows/films, we can judge them on their reel/real performances that are seen while in novels, it is left to our imagination to visualize their expressions, feelings, action, etc.

I am going to lump Ustaad's trusted trio in ONE group category ( that is why I prefer awards given to an ensemble cast since it is not on any one actor' s shoulders that a film/show's success hinges on) and choose them as my favourite supporting character/s.

Ibrahim, Sayyid, Azeez- difficult to downplay one to highlight the other as each one of them plays their role perfectly to support AMK. Ibrahim the dependable , able manager who holds the fort whenever AMK is away. Sayyid , the brains and brawn man who can be trusted to carry out a mission beyond expectations. Azeez, a prankster but very practical , his nimble and smooth moves enough to outwit any adversary.

Without their collective unwavering and staunch support AMK would be rendered quite helpless.😳

And when she was forced to change her decision, she unwillingly settled 😆

Originally posted by: roseraja1915

Ok, Sandy Begum, if you insist. I will pick one best fav choice but it is still one from the trio and it is Sayyid Baig. Since author Sahiba specified at least, one particular gesture/thought of theirs that must have tipped the scales in their favour. What is it?

The case for Sayyid Sahib is thus:

Because he dared to venture into the lion's den to find out how much damage had been caused by the escaped messenger and came out fighting like a true warrior that his master would be proud of. With the skills learnt from Ustaad, he magnificently outsmarted his enemies who were in hot pursuit of him. Badly wounded , he survived the ordeal to bring the crucial news of Mahendar having met the messenger.

For displaying immense courage, admirable fighting spirit and fierce loyalty to his mentor, he gets my vote. 😃 😳

If I have to choose one among the many unparallel characters of the novel, all unique in their own way, it has to be Azeez! I know someone will be scrunching her face at me in annoyance and anger but the Author Sahiba have asked us to give our honest opinion. 😃

I like this boy for many reasons and not for the reasons we fight about, not because off-duty from HBAS he adores and admires me and spends half his time on my farm! 🤣 Okay before I get deviated from the topic let me clarify why.

Azeez is full of youth and life. He in his light mood perks up a scene with his light-hearted banter and he does not even spare Khan Sahib when he is in that zone. 😆 He makes everyone laugh be it KS with his hint of a smile or all his peers, they love to be in his company! He is full of roguish humor and gels with one and all alike. And because of this lively nature, we see he is witty and intelligent as well. That is why he can get a gesture and find ways to solve or go to the right aid for help.

But as a disciple of KS, he is fierce when the time demands! He can be lethal and with his athletic physique, he can strike terror among his enemies. He can be deadly and defiant to his foes or opponent irrespective of who they are, be it an informer or the Shehzade, as we witnessed recently. He is brave and doesn't cower under pressure.

Also, he is dead serious when handed a mission. Every time KS asks him to do something be it on some errand or be it in his espionage work, he always dedicatedly finishes his mission keeping his frivolous side aside.

Being the young lad he is, he is very insightful! When, even KS was in denial for his feelings for Heera, Azeez knew his master gets a little prickly or defensive when a certain Sahiba becomes the subject. It was in Aidabad too we saw many a time he would either joke if KS was not in a deadly mood or he never mentioned her when KS was in a serious mood, like as Charanjith in Parnagarh. He knew when his master's mood was okay to approach about the topic. Later, He was insightful enough to come and get Heera to tend to KS when he came severely hurt in Parnagarh, knowing she would be the only one who could calm and soothe his master at that moment! And he himself was hurt but he kept a joking face in front of the maids not to let them know what the actual scene is. Even before KS left for the capital and he saw Heera waiting outside his room, he was the one to urge her to go into the room and meet him. These little instances show his power of gauging a situation and promptly working on it.

And he is fearless! It comes through his brazen and at time brash attitude. We see it when he dealt with the maids in Aidabad sending a zergul flower shutting them off or when he was harshly sarcastic to Khalil when they were saving Heera from him or later as a sceptic mocker, standing up for his master in conveying his endless effort in covering the distance to save Heera fom Khalil or his defiant eyes sending the message even to the Shehzade of his fearlessness when he was being sent to get his arms chopped off.

And lastly, I am amazed to see this young lad's dedication and devotion to KS! He can willingly and happily give his life up for his master as we recently witnessed. That kind of loyalty we find in his master himself and he has been successful to instill that in his pupil. Whatever the reason may be, KS gave him a direction in his life from being a street urchin, maybe KS gave him family from being an orphan all his life, maybe KS gave him the food, shelter, clothing to fulfill his basic needs, maybe KS gave him reason to smile instead of rotting in a bar or dungeon, maybe KS made a man out of him from a mere thief he was...but his loyalty to KS is unwavering under any circumstances and now we see that loyalty has been extended to KS's Begum as well.

And if I can't choose Azeez, my next bet would be on Mohan Banna. Again for his being the pillar of strength physically and mentally for his men, being their guide, mentor and instructor he has fulfilled his duty to the core. He is like a mountain protecting, guarding and keeping Parnagarh and its heiresses safe all along. He also looked after the moral aspect about Durga and Heera. Even when Durga was out with Mahendra, he was the one who was concerned about her safety, propriety and honor.

All along in Aidabad, even when he was suffering so badly from the septicemia and was in terrible pain, his concern did not fade even for that moment. He was willing to sacrifice his life for Heera and her troops and urged her to move ahead leaving him behind.

He is extremely loyal and that we can see at every opportunity! That is the reason KS being the farsighted person he is, knew who to confide in and called Mohan Banna to update him about himself and the reason why he became the Mansabdar and wedded Heera. And sure enough, that was the best decision like always, because when the time came Mohan Banna stood out to be the shining Sun to clear the fog and mist of Parnagarh people's ignorance regarding Heera and KS. He was the bellowing voice of reason that subsided the air of unrest and upheaval. He stood by his Mistress like a rock shielding her from all the pelting stones and insult and promised to be there after bringing in the peace and composure back to Parnagarh and I am sure he will keep his promise, no matter what!

These kinds of genuine people are hard to come by and they don't show off or brag their worth in a hollow manner but shows their worth when the time comes being rock solid in their support, strength and stature!

Phew...this was a Herculean task to pick and choose one! 😃

Lashy - Of course we have many FAVOURITE supporting characters from HBAS & picking one is pretty hard. Even though you started the story from Heera's point of view, AMK loomed larger later on and both have had their fair and equal share of being the leads. For me a supporting character is someone ( or sometimes it's something ) that is very relevant to the story without whom the leads would not have shone as brightly. Supporting character is someone whom the lead(s) bounce off to carry out their mission. In this light it was Durga, herself being a strong personality and for a while in the beginning whom I thought would be the lead of HBAS who is my favourite supporting character.

Though avenging Durga's death has taken a back seat at this point of time for our leads, when the villains Mahendar & Khalil are punished she will be back in the limelight because both our leads will feel they have done their duty only when that happens. Durga has been a driving force in most of the actions that took place in part 1 & 2 in HBAS and expecting she'll be there again in spirit towards the end!

The one thing that is common to all great captivating fictions is the presence of a strong main character and a few great supporting characters.

"NO MAN IS AN ISLAND

Just like us non fictional beings the main character of a fiction also needs friends, family, mentors, teachers and even rivals and enemies to help them grow.A supporting character contributes to and enhances the leads experiences by not only offering help, support and encouragement but also challenges that may help them to learn lessons and see different points of view.So in short a supporting character

Should have a strikingly different personality from that of the main character

Should be affecting the story line

Should have a strong influence on the main character

Should be able to create conflict

May have his/her own complex back story

So I think it can be safely concluded that HBAS would have been a different story altogether if this supporting character' SHEHZAADA'had been removed, hence my favourite. No such thing can be said about the other characters that help the story to move forward.

THE VILLAINISATION OF THE SHEHZAADA PROJECTING HIM NOT ONLY AS THIS ISLAMIC BIGOT BUT ALSO THE THIRSTY EXPANSIONIST(WHICH IS HIS OWN COMPLEX BACK-STORY) MAY BE BAD (HISTORY) BUT A GOOD STORYLINE.

LASHY FROM THE STORY, MY VOTE WOULD BE FOR CHACHAJAAN

I THINK HIS CONTRIBUTION AND SUPPORT IN KHAN SAHIB'S HAS BEEN INVALUABLE. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR CHACHAJAAN'S EFFORTS, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A KHAN SAHIB AT ALL. HIS DEDICATION, LOYALTY, CARE AND LOVE HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN SHAPING THE CHARACTER OF THE SAHIB

YES THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER CHARACTERS IN BOTH SAHIB'S AND HEERA'S LIFE WHO ARE STRONG CONTENDERS TO BE FAVOURITES - THE TRIO OF INRAHIM, AZEEZ AND SAYYID, GAURI, RATAN KAKA, VAID KAKA, ETC...BUT I FEEL THAT THE LONGEST AND STRONGEST SUPPORT FOR THE SAHIB HAS COME FROM CHACHAJAAN

BHABHIJAAN I LOVED WHAT YOU WROTE 👏 AND AS YOU HAVE RIGHTLY SAID IT IS DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE THE BEST AMONG THOSE 3 THEY ARE ALL WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD AND LOYAL SUPPORTERS OF THE SAHIB AND HEERA - WILLING TO LAY THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR MASTER AT ANY TIME...

IF I HAD TO CHOOSE FROM AMONG THE TRIO,I THINK IT WOULD BE MIRZA BHAIJAAN 😉 FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THAT I FEEL AS A PERSON CLOSER TO KHAN SAHIB IN AGE, HE IS MORE OF A FRIEND TO HIM THAN THE OTHER TWO...HE IS ABLE TO SPEAK HIS MIND WHEN HE THINKS IT IS NECESSARY, AND YET MAINTAIN THE MASTER-FOLLOWER RELATIONSHIP FOR THE MOST PART

I RECALL THAT MIRZA BHAIJAAN WAS THE ONE WHO QUESTIONED THE SAHIB WHY HE DID NOT DISCLOSE THE INFO REGARDING HEERA'S SCROLLS TO THE SHEHZAADE, AND ONCE AGAIN WHEN HE THOUGHT THE SAHIB WAS HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS REGARDING SURRENDERING THE FARMAAN...

ALL THREE MEN ARE VERY DEAR TO THE SAHIB, AND TO US, NO DOUBT ON THAT, AND I REALLY LIKE THAT AZEEZ GETS INTO THE ROLE OF A PRANKSTER ONCE IN A WHILE, TO LIGHTEN UP EVERYONE'S MOOD...AND I DO FULLY AGREE THAT SAYYID IS EXCEPTIONALLY BRAVE, DETERMINED AND FULLY DEDICATED TO HIS DUTIES...BUT I DO FEEL THAT MIRZA BHAIJAAN IS JUST A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER TWO 😉

This is the first character that came to my mind when I saw Lashy's Q yesterday...thought I'll post it today...Lashy...I still despise him and always will...i want him shredded...And I also like to read him ...dissect his thoughts...You've got him as a complex character...

The question is not about who is the most important to the story or who is the most influential in the story. Personal favourite due to some trait or act. So to me it was a tough choice between Durga and Azeez.

Durga could have been easily the heroine of the story had she not died in Chapter 3. Beauty, courage, intelligence, sacrifice, smarts and dare even in the face of death, love for her motherland and her people, motherliness to her little sister, guilt for the accident that partially blinded her...what was not there to love about Durga Bai! I have often wondered whom AMK would have flipped for had he met BOTH the sisters. (Though we have discussed it earlier and the reasons why it was Heera who made his heart skip beats.) Such was her aura that her presence was more strongly felt than even Heera's when they appeared together though Heera's depth is something else altogether.

Parnagarh and Durga both in essence are one and the same. You cannot think of one without thinking of the other. As i said earlier even in the Teej paintings i couldn't help thinking who would be her.

Heera- you'll easily fall in love with and Durga - you'll be awed by her and adore her. I too adore her as a supporting character. She lends a shine and sparkle to the story.

But by a very very small percent i like Azeez a little more.

The nimble sprightly athletic agile pick pocketeer who can easily steal our fascination and regard.

Change the characterisation of anyone else not much of the story is lost. Change his nature, the story becomes serious. He has lent light heartedness and humour right from the Aidabad days.

He has never refrained from expressing his mind and with oodles of fun too. And he doesn't shy from stretching the fun to the limits, sometimes even inviting the khanjar of Khan Sahib.

Teasing the inimitable Khan Sahib, daringly sending the zergul flower, bringing Heera to treat Khan Sahib against his choice, nudging her into the Mansabdar's chamber, this boy can spread joy and happiness wherever he is. He is sometimes like Seenu of Oopiri/Thozha if you have seen the film. He reinforces the magic of life and happy living full of zeal.

Not that any of his playfulness takes away his daring, sincerety or loyalty when in demand. His recent defiance of even the Shehzade, accepting any pain for the man who picked him up from the streets and extended the hands of friendship is proof enough. His unwavering loyalty had even invited the jealousy of the Mughal Supremo.

This much surely any of AMK's boys will do, but the way Azeez does it makes him more endearing. Non challantly and smilingly.
