Was Ashwariya popular in the 90's?

She is the same age as Kajol, Ravenna, Karishma, Urmila, Manisha, Ayesha Jhulka and other 90's actresses but most of those actresses were ruling BW in the 90's but going by Ashwariya's filmography, she doesn't seem to a competitor of those aactresses, her only hit movies in the 90's were HDDCS and Taal, even flop Twinkle Khanna seems to give more hits than her in the 90's. Her career seems to be stable more in the 2000's but at that time most of the 90's aactresses vanished even they are same age as her. I wonder why she couldn't become the competitor of the 90's actresses even they are same age as her.

Yes she was immensely popular. She had pan india reach not just bollywood.

She only started acting in 1998/1999.

But she was already famous anyway for that Pepsi ad and Miss World, just not as an actress.

That's modeling, I am talking about BW career, even Arjun Rampal was super model but his BW career failed.

Aishwarya debuted quite late in comparison to her peers. Karishma debuted in 1993 raveena shilpa n kajol in 91-92 whereas Aishwarya entered hindi films in 97. Unlike her peers she chose to debut with Maniratnam's bilingual movie Iruvar. It was not a quintessential mainstream commercial movie.! And she saw back to back successes in '99 with hddcs n taal.

Aishwarya made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam's 1997 Tamil film Iruvar and had her first Hindi film release in Aur Pyar Ho Gaya that same year.

Now if she made a debut in 1997, how is she supposed to have many hits or ruling in 90's? 😳

People went to watch Jeans just to see this doe eyed, fair girl who was a Miss world. I havent seen that kind of craze for any newcomer actress. I remember my mom saying that though she cant act, she is ethereal to look at ie like Mandakini..and is going to be huge

Ofcourse HDDCS changed everything and made her the big star, her dancing skills, her acting, her looks, her grace..everything came together in that movie..

I think Aish never fully capitalized on her craze, just like HR..lots of bad movie choices..and atrocious acting display, when if guided correctly, she is a treat to watch..and the directors barring SLB, Mani Ratnam, genuinely dont understand how to use Aish to her strengths.

PS - How much ever people scream nepotism, strangely in the last 2 decades, its the outsiders who have really made it big - Madhuri, Juhi, Aish, DP, Preity Zinta amongst others...

People were crazy for Aishwarya Rai. Even a if a movie like Aur Pyaar ho Gaya didn't do well, it didn't dent her popularity. She was always a class above the rest. And that is evident even today.
