My thoughts- we are underestimating the current gen, nostalgia or everything old always looks better with sepia tinted lenses. Madhuri, Sridevi, Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Hema all were female superstars. In an era where women were used more as props and hanger ons, the fact that these actresses still made a mark for themselves speaks a lot about them. We are not bereft of female superstars now. In fact I feel we have a healthier population of female superstar contenders than before. Vidya Balan at her prime was a superstar, nobody but she could have made movies like dirty picture Kahaani etc a hit. The subject was unconventional. She faltered with some real bad movies but she still has a dedicated fan following who are willing to give her a chance and wait for her to choose the right vehicle. Tumhari sullu was almost it. Katrina Kaif at her prime was a superstar. Yes she was not a great actress, neither is Salman, but many of her movies were hit because of her. Indian audiences loved watching her on screen. DP is a superstar. She is also trying to carve a niche for herself by scouting for better parts rather than going for the fail safe formula of being the hanger on to one of the khans in one if their movies. Also the fact that she keeps improving with every movie of hers makes her very exciting to watch. Her fan club is phenomenal. She is literally like India's sweetheart. Kangana was a superstar, like Vidya she too faltered with the wrong movies. But a good movie should bring her back. I also feel she is an extremely good comedienne. It's very difficult to pull of comedy and she is one of the few actors who can do so. Priyanka may not have had that much domestic success but is a force to reckon with. Anushka , by producing and starring in some real unconventional movies with unconventional stars is another one redefining conventions. If her Parinis a hit she can also be rightfully called a superstar. Sonam is again working on good scripts and Alia with her focus on performance and character driven roles is emerging as the new superstar. The field is rich and what's refreshing is that most of the actresses are trying to define their own path and in turn encouraging a very male dominated industry to write better scripts and come out with better projects for them. They are asserting themselves whether it be in terms if pay or roles. I think we have more superstars now than previously.
