Forget about numbers, devotion to his craft supersedes BO numbers!
A big part of what underlies Aamir Khan's popularity, and what makes him fit to be king, so to speak, is his apparent humility, his devotion to his craft and to making movies that make a difference.⭐️ A colleague recently called him "a simple man, an organic individual, which sounds about right. If he has a superstar-sized ego, and who could blame him if he does, he rarely shows it. Certainly not like his box office rival Salman Khan, who comes across as all ego, all the time. And even the refined Shah Rukh Khan, who is undeniably a devoutly religious, upstanding individual, can be taken to task for being overly self-promoting, making too many movies and too eagerly courting his own huge fanbase. If Salman is a charismatic bad boy (see a list of his criminal activities and convictions here) and Shah Rukh is a beloved but flawed father figure, Aamir is, simply, zen.
Earlier today a friend related a revealing anecdote about Aamir Khan's essence as compared to those of Salman and Shah Rukh:
I was talking to a friend who worked on the Don ride (a Bollywood-themed amusement park attraction) in Dubai, and they had all three Khans in for a day's shoot. Two of them were eight hours late and did the work grudgingly, but one showed up on time and was asking for additional takes after the director called wrap. Guess which one?
The answer, of course, was Aamir.👏
