MUMBAI 2010
He just had a few more days left in college...his exams were coming up...he had to this job at the earliest
He waited for almost an hour at the college canteen, bunking classes which was a rarity for him...finally he saw her coming...looking as pretty as ever.
She had always been a reserved girl and wouldnt interact much wuth anybody. She went and sat on one benches, as she was taking out her notes, Omkara Singh Oberoi mustered up courage for the job.
He went and stood beside her...and cleared his throat.
Hearing this she looked up at him...with a query in her eyes...
Without wasting further time...Omakara came to the point...
"Gauri for the past 6 months I have been desperately trying to tell you...that I really LLLike you...I couldnt get the apt opportunity for this. If you also harbour some feelings for me please let me know...we can go ahead with this relationship"...he said this all and one go and heaved a sigh of relief.
Gauri stared at him...to say that she was surprised would be an underestimation. Omkara Singh Oberoi was a rich, handsome boy with a brilliant academic background and females would drool over him. Gauri Sharma on the other hand came from a lower middle class family and was a plane Jane. The only similarity she had with Omkara was that, she too had a brilliant academic background.
Omkara was waiting impatiently for Gauri's response...every cell in his body wanting a "yes" from her. He was hopelessly in Love with her...but just to ease out he had used the word "Like".
Gauri looked at him and smiled...Om was relieved.
Before she could proceed further the bell rang for the next class and she quickly gathered her books and bags and hurried away.
Gauri's smile was sufficient to keep Om's spirit high. He waited for her till the end of the day but didnt get to see her.
Three days passed by but still she wasnt to be seen. From her classmates Om found out that she had left that very day of his proposal due to some emergency at home.
He waited for weeks and months...but she was nowhere to be seen.
His college got over...and civil services exams came up. There was no news of any whereabouts of Gauri.
What remained with Om was her smile to his question. He never gave up hope.

MUMBAI 2017
He saw her looking tired and distraught. She hadnt changed much over 7 years...looking as much beautiful...but she had lost considerable weight.
Om kept staring at her...and his trance was broken by the Judge asking his question
"Mrs Gauri Kali Pratap Thakur, do you accept the murder charges of your Husband Mr Kali Pratap Thakur?"
She kept quiet...
The judge...repeated the question
"Mrs Gauri Kali Pratap Thakur, do you accept the murder charges of your Husband Mr Kali Pratap Thakur?"
She looked at the back of the courtroom...and then turned towards the judge...and nodded her head in a yes.
A blabber broke out in the courtroom...at this acceptance as this was a high profile case of the murder of one of the leading businessman of the city. Public and reporters were accusing her of being a gold digger and murderer.
It was an extremely disturbing sight for ACP Omkara Singh Oberoi. Deep down his heart he couldnt accept the charges and the crime. He was posted in Delhi right after his probationary period and was recently transferred back to Mumbai. On returning the first thing that was revealed was that the high profile prisoner would be imprisoned in one of the prisons under his charges.
The Judge continued..."Mrs Gauri Kali Pratap Thakur, has been found guilty of murdering her husband Mr Kali Pratap Thakur, the rarest of the rare crime. She hasnt defended herself for the crime. Under section 302 IPC she has been charged for the murder and hence will be sentenced for life imprisonment"
There was a cheer in the court for justice prevailing and a murderer being rightfully punished.
She would be taken to a prison which was under the jurisdiction of ACP Omkara Singh Oberoi. As they were dragging Gauri out of the courtroom she kept glancing towards the back of the courtroom. Om had noticed that.
When she was at the exit, momentarily her eyes met Om's and his heart skipped a beat as before. Her eyes told a different story. It wasnt a murderer's eyes definitely. Before he could react further Gauri was dragged away, for the last time she glanced at back of the courtroom, smiled satisfactorily and went away.
Om saw her going away...yet again...
Remembering her glances, he looked at the back of the room...he saw a young girl of about 16/17yrs standing and ...sobbing
As if out of some reflex Om started walking towards her.
...
Gauri climbed up the prison van ...amidst a huge furore of the public...and people jeering her. Her eyes were cold and emotionless...the tears had dried up.
Probably the fact would be buried forever...
Kali Pratap Thakur was a womaniser forever. Gauri was forced to marry him to repay her father's debt. Marital rape and physical assault was an everyday affair for her. She was forced to abort twice as the foetus were found to females. It seemed to be an endless affair.
Then one day Gauri's younger sister, 17 yrs old Parvati had come to meet her since she had heard of her sister's illness. Gauri always avoided such meetings. As she had gone to the kitchen to prepare tea she heard a desperate cry. Gauri rushed out of the kitchen and went to the guestroom from where the noise was coming. She saw the sight she dreaded the most. Kali was forcing herself on Parvati. In a fit of rage Gauri pulled Kali with all her might and for the firts time ever slapped him hard. He was shocked, squinted his eyes for sometime...and then gave a demonic laugh. He caught Gauri by her throat and began to strangulate her. Gauri tried her best to resist but he was too strong.
Gauri was being to get dizzy...when suddenly she felt the hands around her throat loosen. In her vision she saw Kali staggering and falling down on the floor in a pool of blood. He was dead. Beside him Parvati was standing with an iron bar. In a desperate attempt to save her sister she hit his head with the rod.
After recovering from the initial shock, Gauri hurriedly went go Parvati and snatched the rod.
"I have nothing to lose by becoming a murderer...you will lose a lot...promise me that you shall keep your mouth shut regarding what has happened in this room. You are too naive and will not be able to face the heinous questions which may be asked to you. Our society never forgives females evem though they may not be at fault"...Gauri gave a weak smile to Parvati and continued..."I had always wanted to become a doctor but couldnt...you will have to fufil my dreams and aspirations"
...
She stared down at her handcuffs...and smiled to herself
She was happy that she could catch a glimpse of the only man...whom she ever loved...though he would probably never know that...
The very day he professed his liking for her was the day her father suffered a heart attack and had taken to bed. To repay his heavy loans she was forced to marry the monster double her age. But it was her secret wish that at least once she would meet Omkara...and finally God had been kind to her...but what an irony...he was the guard...and she the convict...
Slowly a lone tear drop escaped her eyes.
