Pre 2000, most actors were acting between 5-10 films a year. Nobody expected each one to become hit. But as long as one delivered a hit/superhit film an year, they were stars.
Sri's span was from 80-95 where she hit the speak in late 88-90. (Chal Baaz, Mr India), Mad's span was 85-98, peak was between 92-95 (Saajan to Raja).
It is the vacuum after her, which has made her the icon. Everyone one got replaced by somebody. Vaijayantimala gave way to Hemamalini (who debuted in the film which which Vaijayantimala was supposed to do and gave a superhit), Sridevi took the role in Chandni which was written with Rekha in mind. But no female superstar appeared after Madhuri. Karishma and Kajol went for marriage at early age and took semi retirement. When Kajol went for marriage she was at the top. If she had continued for few more years, may be she had a chance. Similarly Deepika spoilt her chance after BM by taking a long break.
