I don't watch serials so can't comment on that. Do not watch IPK3, only know IPK1 so I cannot compare or say anything about that. But I can write essays about sequels and movies. But I will spare people the torture. 😛
In short, three things.

1. Casting. If you cast terribly you can't save even something with a strong backstory like Batman or James Bond. Think the George Clooney Batman series or Timothy Dalton Bond. Beyond terrible.

2. Supporting Cast - It takes an entire cast to make a movie work, not one character. Think I am Legend and Cast Away. Both Will and Tom Hanks were very good. But can you watch a movie like that many times. Good supporting cast absolutely matters. Without Bane, without Loki. without Gabbar Singh what would these movies be ?

3. Script - Script is king. Think Starwars 4,5,6. Had scifi, all the gimmicks but strong story. Starwars 1,2,3 by the same writer and director, George Lucas. Bad script, better tech. But still people prefer 4,5,6 over 1,2,3 as the prequels are rather terrible because of the script.

If this is about IPKKND 3 then it has just started
Barely a month has completed
If it is about other shows then various factors can be the reason
People may not like the story / cast
The timing of the show may not match
People may hold on to nostalgia and refuse to see the sequel

overstretched ideas
often the second idea is not as good, maybe for kmh2 nbt2
the original idea for these 2 shows was more touching and had a more unique concept

sarabhai vs sarabhai 2 was not bad, at least it was to some extent funny! IPKKND 3 the less said the better!

Sequels of hit films work. A serial ends when its viewers keep on decreasing. Viewers stop watching a serial when they lose interest on it. So sequels don't work.

IMO the concept of sequels or second seasons is gravely misunderstood on ITV.
No one has been able to get it rightly. If we stick to the concept of seasonal format then the next season is a continuation of the same story which was left at a high point in the first season. It works in western shows coz they have seasons of limited episodes.
On Indian TV,seasonal format has a different meaning. Here Season 2 means leads will die and the children of the leads will take the show ahead.Above all the never ending episodes add monotony to the series.

Now coming to sequels, they are no different from the so called next seasons. These sequels have a completely different story with different characters.Sometimes the actors are retained like the KMH franchise while sometimes new actors are brought in.Either way the sequels never matched up with the popularity of the first one.The reason for this is that more than the actors the audience appreciated the characters. It's due to this attachment that they stick to the show even after the show and characters have been butchered. Therefore even if you bring the same actors you cannot expect the same level of popularity.
Another factor is the tendency of Indian TV to keep on dragging and stretching like a chewing gum.Due to this the audience loses interest in the plot. Then when the next season or sequel comes they are unable to connect with the characters despite having the sams actors.
I believe half the problems would be solved if there was a limit put on the duration of these series. The production houses might become more content oriented.Coz at the end of the day content and storyline is all that matters.
