I have watched some bollywood movies where more than 50% of the dialogues are in English. Every sentence has like 3 words of English and maybe 2 Hindi. If you watch older movies this wasn't the case and therefore the dialogues had more substance.

I can only speak for my family. English does open more doors for you even in India. I have family down South in India who do not know Hindi, but speak multiple Southern languages and English. My parents who have for years lived in the US, know multiple Southern languages, make it a point to speak, read and write in them diligently and taught us to do so cannot understand Hindi because they do not watch BW. They do not feel it is necessary to do so but they know how to speak Spanish because we live in an area where Spanish is spoken often. I am self taught Hindi cause I fell for SRK as a kid ☺️ 😆, cannot understand a lot, cannot read and write of course.

Point I am trying to make, if you want to communicate outside the Hindi belt you need to know English. Heck, I do not know Kannada, so if a Kannada actor wants to communicate with me, better he do so in English. All four southern states actors use English to communicate other than the native tongue of the state, not Hindi.

As a celeb, if you want to be a known outside the Hindi belt, even South Indian and the world cause BW is very mainstream now English communication is necessary, not an option.

Dunno, but it's a mentality everywhere in India.. if you know English, you're cool, even cooler if you can throw in some slangs or speak with a non-desi desi accent..
However most BW stars speak good hindi in public(or maybe it is good enough for me, being a South Indian), it's just the younger lot with the prejudice and also ironically poor colloquial English.

Things may look different in South India, or maybe I am not aware enough, but as per my awareness goes - South India mein, people have a pride over their native language and culture... especially more so in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
They speak and know good English, but trust me, their mother tongue is what they take pride in. I've heard of incidents where a person knowing English/Hindi would still assert his identity with his mother tongue. I feel the sentiment is getting stronger in Telugu people too... i hope so.

I think there are people everywhere in our country, albeit in minorities, who do take pride in their language.

You actually have an important point here.

If I go back and look at all the times I saw hindi actors speaking shudh hindi on TV, I remember half the things would go over my head... but as I kept watching few words were added to my horribly poor hindi vocabulary.

hmm... I am kinda confused on this topic..

I may be wrong , but wherever I go in India, kids speak in English and their parents also speak in English to them.
My son knows Hindi but he never gets a chance to speak coz everyone talks in English !!

Yeah, the way I understand Hindi is not the whole sentence, but a few words and then I fill in the rest for context. That is why I cannot understand complex Hindi completely, I do not know the meaning for at least one word. I understand a few words and get the general meaning, I have been doing this for years so it is done automatically in my head and I never realized what I was doing until recently in Dangal. I did not know the meaning of half the words in the dialog or words like Hanikarak for I have never heard of it. But as I keep watching over the years words have been added to my vocabulary too.
