I keep on hearing that such and such celeb dont have good english communication skills but why is english so much important ? Shouldn't they have more grasp in hindi considering they work in hindi language films .
Also most of these celebs are 12 th pass mostly , so why do they make fun of other person's education ??

Anna - Why only BW? It is same in entire India
Living in many European countries and travelling around the world, I realized one thing. We Indians are unnecessarily obsessed with English .
Not knowing Local language is a shame in European countries.

In France - You need to know french
In Germany - you need to know German
In Switzerland - In German parts , you need to know German and in French parts of same country, you can't do without French

English isn't useful at all !!

In India, we proudly announce that our Hindi is weak and we communicate well in English.

BW people speak horrible English,. specially Farah Khan - "Both of you all were very good"

BW is obsessed with English, white skin and pseudo intellect. No wonder the movies are flopping

It's terrible mentality all over the world. The moment someone speaks in another language, it is seen as inferior. With people mocking as: "Oh, it is obvious that your first language is not English." It has become so frequent that people who don't speak English themselves see it as a insecurity and say "I'm sorry for my weak English, it is not my first language." The ones who find English as the only ideal really suck and they don't understand that people who speak many other languages than English actually are the learned ones while these pseudo intellectuals only know English. One language VS two languages or many others - it is obvious that the latter is smarter.

This.

And, it's not a global mentality. Indians are more obsessed with English than Brits. These Bollywood folks more so.

It's not just limited to Bollywood. I didn't want to say this at the risk of generalsing but I think (most of) the entire Indian subcontinent is like this.

So many Desis who travel abroad (for study/work purposes) come back with a newly acquired accent & some feign to lack the ability to converse in their first language.😆 Please note that I am only referring to people who have been brought up in India/Bangladesh/Pakistan here, and not people who were born/brought up overseas.

Even then, I don't see how it's so hard to learn your ancestors' mother tongue (sorry, I didn't want to brag but I did it :P). People act as if they are oh so sophisticated & learned for having the ability to speak in fluent English.

And don't even get me started on the cringy fake accents. 🥱 Phoney level: MAX.

Status quo I guess
Not only bollywood in many parts of India education means english speaking ability😆
Why go to bollywood? In this forum also a star has to be articulate having fluent english speaking ability to be considered a big thing..While for acting I dont think there's even a need for formal education..Look at Ameesha Patel..What is she doing with her career and life with Tufts degree and on the contrary look at Akshay Kumar who is not fluent in English neither has a college degree and where he is now..Difference is smartness..

But for KJO and Kangy both are correct in their stand but both are forever victim..Match made in heaven,,So no comment on that breed

I'm guessing it's not English itself that's the big deal. It's what it denotes. In India, fluent English speakers tend to be from the middle and upper classes who can afford that kind of education and foreign trips and watch American TV shows and movies, etc.

English fluency generally means the person is richer and more advantaged and probably working in more high paying, high skilled jobs.

In a poor country, showing off your advantages becomes important. That's why the same classes get so upset about movies that show poverty because they want to act like that part of India doesn't even exist. They have a big chip on their shoulder that their country is no less than UK and US.
