Sorry I can't remember who posted what but a few responses. There are tons of American movies about American poverty, drug addiction, racism etc. Not a lot of them are successful but they are definitely made.
When you look at a foreign culture, you tend to really focus on the things that are most striking whether good or bad. Every American I have ever talked to about visiting India has overpopulation, odor, poverty, and dirtiness etched into their first impression. There are definitely lots of really really amazing things that also stay with them forever. I really don't think most Americans view India the way Indians seem to think. Slumdog Millionaire and Lion make you cry but overall are feel good movies. They did really well because - despite the poverty and hardships - they leave us with a feeling that anything is possible and that the human spirit (in this case Indian) is unbreakable. Americans LOVE that.

If India sent better films to the Academy Awards they would be nominated. The lunchbox had huge buzz and might have been nominated. Americans (not a lot just the usual foreign film watchers, many people won't read subtitles) would watch good Indian films if they knew which ones to watch and had the opportunity.
