Is Bidaai a copy of Saat Phere? The makers of the two shows argue

A still from Bidaai

If you have been noticing similarities between Sapna Babul Ka…Bidaai and Saat Phere of late, it's because the producers of Bidaai are, allegedly, copying Saat Phere in more ways than one. Both the shows deal with the issue that a dark girl faces and how her complexion is a social stigma.

Says Pearl Shahi, creative head of Zee TV, "Saloni's dark complexion poses a problem when her parents try to hunt for a match for her. She finally finds a good-looking boy. Bidaai… has the same story line and deals with the same issues that a dark complexioned girl faces in India. The promos of Bidaai are very similar to Saat Phere in which the parents are worried if she will ever find a match. A lot has been copied from our show, it is almost like re-living the initial Saat Phere phase. The base of the show, issues and the promos are same."

Says Purnendu Shekhar, writer of Saat Phere, "The concept of a dark girl facing rejection and the fair one being favoured, is similar in both the shows. The latest promo where the girl says 'why no one likes my dark complexion and everyone overlooks my qualities, will anyone marry me?'. Apart from that the character of the mother in Saat Phere and that of the aunt (mami) in Bidaai are same. The scenes where the mother asks her daughter why she isn't taking care of her herself and urges her to use a fairness cream, is also copied. We are shocked to see the similarities in both the shows."

Reacting to the allegation, producer of Bidaai, Rajan Shahi, says, "Why is the comparison being made after four months of Baidaai's launch? Is it because our show is doing better? I don't want to comment any further!"

Both the stories are completely different even though in both shows there are dark skinned characters. Bidaai focuses on both Ragini and Sadhna wheras in Saat Phere the fair girl hardly had any major role. She was a negative role which turned positive and then negative. And in Saat Phere they hardly focused on her dark skin after her marriage. And now offlate they have brought up the topic of her dark skin.. probably they have seen Bidaai doing so well and as the Bidaai producers said, why are the Saat Phere creatives bringing up the comparison now after 4 months?

i agree why r they saying this after 4 months if they feel that something is being copied than they should speak up first when the show had launched.

What rubish I think Zee is upset with Bidai's sucess & so they are doing so 😡 😡 ......Sath Phere deals with the story of a married woman & darkness issue is forgotten long before. Bidai is about the fair girl "who is suffering for her fair complection" which was never shown in Sath Phere. And how is Mamiji's character similar to Saloni's mom? Dose she hate Shubra like mamiji dose Sadhna? 😡 😡

I think it is copying. Ever since Zee caught up with the TRP race, Star has started to copy many of their programmes. Let's take Star Voice of India. Initially it was going to be named Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Nhi Sa. When Zee sent a court notice, Star had to change the name of the show. Star also made their own version of Zee's Antakshari.

Like many of you said above, "Why complain 4 months down the lane?" Well the simple answer is before you accuse anyone or any production house of copying, you have to find evidence. If Zee had said @ the v. beginning that Star has copied their idea, then the argument would have been that the actress may have dark skin but the storyline is different to SP. 4 months after the start of Bidaai they have enough evidence that the storyline is being copied, for example the promos.

That is my opinion. Who knows..Zee might send another court notice 😆 .

If Zee people have seen the actual show instead of the promos they would have known better Ragini is busy with her self not with solving her Nanad, Gethani, Behen etc etcs problems like Saloni dose 24x7. .

Actually in my opinion both the dramas are running along the same lines as the movie Vivah (shahid kapoor and amrita rao)

  • amritas character was compared to her cousin who was dark
  • her aunty would force her cousin to use fairness cream etc
  • jealousy from aunt etc etc etc

obviously not exactly the same but does somewhat run along the same lines

(personal opinion)

does it really matter if the concept is the same or similar, for me what matters is who does it better.

personally i prefer watching bidaii, but others prefer watching saat phere. everyone should just watch what they want.

Gajendra Singh was Zee's SRGMP and Antakshari's creative head. Due to some personal probs he left Zee and started similar shows in Star (without copying anyones ideas since it was his to begin with). The same can't be said for Zee. They took GS's SRGMP and Antakshari and made it their own without even giving their own touch of creativity in it. They just took off where he left. GS just took his own ideas to another channel, so this doesnt mean star is copying Zee.

The storyline of Bidaai started more along the lines of Vivah, even though now it has changed and gone further. But it is not even close to SP. Only that there is a dark complexioned main character in there. And as AVFAN pointed out in SP they have lost focus and the main character has become another Tulsi/Parvati. Whereas here we have 2 main characters and they have their own issues to solve rather than going and solving the world's problems. And I'm more than sure this show will not go the Saat Phere way in future. Right from the 1st episode it has only gotten better and better. Its one of the best shows ever.. the dialouges, acting, everything is just superb in Bidaai👏👏👏

That is my opinion. Who knows..Zee might send another court notice 😆 .
