Discovering the Magic
Prologue:
Well hello Stranger; long time no chat.
Mehek sighed her relief that KK had even acknowledged the tentative message she had sent a minute earlier. With all of chaos of the past few months, she hadn't been able to sustain a fraction of the communication that their online friendship needed to maintain itself. She fully expected that the magical connection that they had initially developed was gone, and that her greeting would be ignored. You see, as her time focusing on India's Super Cook had increased, conversely, so had their online chats waned. What had begun and developed in such a lovely fashion had dwindled to practically nonexistent: a quick greeting or a liking of something the other had posted. And then that even went on hiatus. For her part, she had been so busy, not to mention distracted by her interactions with that brute who called himself Shaurya Khanna. Most nights it was all she could do to crawl into her bed after the stresses of the day. Without a doubt, she had been the worst of friends.
But then she thought about it...KK hadn't exactly kept up his end of the relationship either. Moreover, now that she thought more on it, she couldn't recall exactly when she had last heard from him either. Piqued, her fingers flew over her keyboard.
I could very well say the same for you.
Without thinking she hit send.
Receiving the message Shaurya smiled to himself. MS was absolutely right, so he couldn't exactly fault her for her indignant retort. Suddenly another message came through, even before he could type the apology she probably deserved.
I'm sorry, that was rude and I probably shouldn't have typed that. How have you been?
Now: well he was on cloud nine actually. Everything had gone right culminating in the last appointment he had to keep in an hour's time, after which he would finish up for the day. In exactly one hour from now, he would sign off on a 5 year renewal of India's Super Cook with the network. It was the apt reward for the high ratings the show had garnered in this rotation, and specifically for him having to deal with that woman; her family and their low-class way of life for both the duration of the production of his reality competition, and even beyond, he sourly contemplated, recalling their interference in his personal life. While he could never discount her talent, proven by the final result at the show's spectacular finale, he could honestly say that he was glad to see the last of that woman. Life beyond her: life without Mehek Sharma would be so ...
Shaurya lost his train of thought, when he found he couldn't conclude the sentence. What exactly would life be like without the whirlwind that surrounded his personal TRP producer?
KK, I need you.
Well that was an attention grabber.
Ah...????
Let me start from the beginning or better yet at the end. I'm leaving India for America in a few days.
Shaurya felt his stomach drop. What did she mean; what had been going on with her since the last time they had been in contact?
The most...fantastic opportunity has come about: one I couldn't say no to, but...
Shaurya typed furiously, ignoring the message he had just received.
MS, your family hasn't fixed an alliance for you, have they; is this the reason why you haven't been in touch?
He waited her answer, with an insatiable sense of dread that he himself did not understand .
Um...Well...that's not what I meant
He drew in a sharp breath , and scanned back up to her previous message. He exhaled and then panned down to the current one.
Well actually, despite the fact that there may have been times of late that the idea of marriage may have been the preferable option to what I have been dealing with: nahi. This is something entirely different. I will be gone for a few months, but there is the definite possibility of the chance that the move may become more permanent. I'm happy for the chance, for the recognition, and my family is so proud, but I'm scared too. And I know that I will be missing home so much. It's going to be so different: amazing but still different. And I'm sure a bit lonely at times, well a lot actually, so I was wondering...if you don't mind...
Mehek cringed, having hit send before she could finish the rambling text.
So no arranged marriage, that was good, Shaurya thought , thinking of his special friend. For some reason the idea just didn't sit well with him: a waste actually. However it did sound as she had been afforded a fantastic opportunity to travel which for some young women was a rarity. He was glad too that it seemed she had her family's support, which sometimes was not the norm in some traditional familial relations.
Congratulations, it sounds as if you are being rewarded for your hard work - or am I just assuming that, and in actuality, you are just off on a prolonged vacation? Either way I am glad you would include me among those you want to keep in touch with. So tell: When, Where and for how long?
Shaurya checked the time, he would need to leave soon to sign the contract with the network at the appointed hour, but he felt it important not to leave his online friend unassured of his support.
Her response was a lot more succinct than her earlier message:
Three days from today: Florida: initially for 4 months.
Mehek broke out in a smile when his answer came:
The Sunshine State...nice. ..This sounds exciting indeed. You can count on me MS. I'll be here whenever you need me. Looking forward to hearing all about it, but I have to go now. But trust me, I will definitely be in touch. TTL - KK
