A request to the CVs re: Maya

So. We've all had a lot of speculations regarding Maya's mental health, and the reasons for that. Please allow me to put forward a very valid concern regarding this. Mental illness is a taboo subject in India (and in most places all over the world). Seeking help for mental illnesses is considered either a) unnecessary, b) overreaction, and/or c) shameful. Whereas it is actually none of these. In some countries, awareness programs are held so that people are encouraged to come forward and ask for assistance from mental health professionals, just as they would from a physician for a fever. Almost everyone has a therapist in close touch with them, even if they are in perfect mental condition. Unfortunately, this is not so in India. The concept of 'paagal' is associated with so much stigma, that patients either go undiagnosed, or untreated, or both, even for common conditions such as depression and anxiety.

So my one request to CVs on this front would be, to not 'villainise' Maya if she is not of sound mental health. There is enough vitriol towards mental health patients in this country, without us needing a villain to strengthen the stigma. Please, please keep this in mind while you sketch the character of Maya. I will be forever grateful.

ETA: Things I would love if shown through Beyhadh:

* Mental illness is not the entirety of a person's existence.
* Sometimes, you CAN get positive qualities out of your mental illness.
* """Love""" does NOT cure mental illness. It helps the person get through it to some degree, but for it to be cured, you need professional help.
* Mentally ill people are not to be feared/hated/ostracized from the society. They need help, love, and respect.
* There is a way out. Or at least, a way to live a happier life. Things don't need to end in tragedy.

If they are indeed going that way, I hope they are prepared to take up some enormous responsibilities.

Exactly!! we do not want her to end her life or end up being in mental asylum at end of the story just because she suffers from some type of psychotic disorder and does stuff out of her obsessiveness.

Agreed whole heartedly. Mental health should be given as much of importance as physical health is given. This issue regarding the stigma around mental health should be dealt with utmost sensitivity and care. TV is a medium which can be constructively used for spreading awareness about any such crucial issue and we do not need any more of stigma being attached to it.

Completely agree. Indian entertainment industry has a penchant for painting it's villains and vamps as suffering from some or other mental illness may be to explain or rather excuse their crimes but by doing so they actually generate lots of misconceptions and animosity towards them when in our country they're already neglected and considered banished from main stream of society.
I just hope Maya finds her happy end with Arjun in the end . Come on cvs ek not villainize her after all she's a victim of childhood abuse and that too from her own father.

Excellent post OP and well said.

It would be a very bold move for a mainstream 'romance drama' serial to tackle and properly portray a female lead with unresolved mental health problems..

After all, as human beings , we are all shaped by our experiences but rising above those experiences/coming to terms with them is what we always strive for in order to move forward.

Also, i would like some of Maya's aggression and drive and the spark in her character be who she is inspite of whatever mental health problems or childhood abuse she is suffering from and not because of.

Maya should be more than the total sum of her suffering, you know what i mean?

Even if they villainaise her I won't hate her because I know that her actions are only a result of her wounded psyche and poor emotional health which seems to have been neglected by those around her. To me she's a person who desperately needs love to get out of the darkness she's been living in.

Maya would at some point wreak havoc in Arjun's life due to her mental condition. But I would like them to show Maya going for treatment after her condition gets recognised... and definitely don't want a 'cured by love' scenario.
