Shivaay comes off as a modern version of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Heathcliffe rolled into one. While the former is the protagonist of Pride and Prejudice (regarded as an epic love story), the latter is the tortured romantic hero of Wuthering Heights, who turns bitter and jaded later in life after his lover's death.
Darcy is the gentleman whose worst (or true?) side makes an appearance every time he interacts with Elizabeth (the girl he falls in love with). The USP of the book is the chemistry between the leads, obvious in the conversations (or confrontations?) they have with each other. The witty, wry humour is a plus. The book pits both the male and female protagonists on equal footing and is cited as Austen's literary advent into feminism. In fact in a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Darcy's love confession was something like this-
"I'm in love with you. It's probably an illusion caused by the release of oxytocin during sex, but I feel as if I'm in love with you. You're not beautiful and you aren't nearly as funny as you think you are. You're a gossip fiend who tries to pass off your nosiness as anthropological interest in the human condition. And your family, obviously, is a disgrace. Yet in spite of all common sense, I can't stop thinking about you." 🤔
Heathclife is the anti-hero who appeals to women drawn towards dark, brooding and mysterious men. 😎 His anger and grief are strong undercurrents throughout the narrative.
Now back to our desi Heathcliffe/Darcy- Shivaay is the shield that has borne the brunt of all the hate in his house, perhaps in an attempt to protect his younger siblings. While Om has been privy to the same, he has had the option of looking for an escape (his addiction before and art, his passion, now), while Shivaay has simply imbibed all the resentment, with no route for an outlet. Added to this, he is highly prejudiced about those beneath him and cannot fathom the possibility of a girl, from a class of society he detests, daring to stand up to him. He deems it his right to badmouth her with no consequence whatsoever. 😡 When she chose to give him a dose of his own medicine, his Himalayan ego couldn't take it and hence the 'Maafi mango' jaap. 🤣
Both these traits have been tried and tested as successful formulae to draw in admirers/fangirls in droves. 😕Such features endear the man to most females who wouldn't mind an assertive (in Shivaay's case, manhandling) attitude as long as he has a heart of gold. When a possibly redeemable, arrogant, prejudiced, bitter, handsome hero comes to life on screen, most girls get weak in the knees, but if such a man pops up in real life, most would run for the hills. 😆
This has worked for centuries. The female mind works in mysterious ways in that regard! 😛
P.S.: I try to keep things simple, but they transform into baby mammoths half-way through. Just wanted to add my two cents to the discussion. Do carry on! Loving all the posts here! 👍🏼
