Chapter 4
"I will place an order for a variety of sweets from you. And I will give you a generous amount for your efforts. But" he quickly added when she opened her mouth. "I have two conditions" he told her.
"Manzoor hai, I agree. Done." She said excitedly.
[Manzoor hai - I accept]
He smirked at her. "At least listen to what they are?" He suggested.
She smiled sheepishly. "Tell me."
"Firstly, they have to be Lucknowi sweets. Pure Lucknowi sweets. Nothing less." He stated.
"Aap don't worry. Lucknow se Lucknowi sweets hi milengi aapko. Khushi Kumari Gupta gives you guarantee." She smiled happily. Such an easy condition.
[Lucknow se Lucknowi sweets hi milengi aapko - You will get only Lucknowi sweets from me]
"Good. And secondly, you will have to sign this." He produced a piece of paper in front of her.
She stared down at it, the tiny words making her head spin. She craned her neck like a bird to look at him.
"What is this?" She asked.
"Contract. 6 months contract. I will place a sweet order from you if you sign this piece of paper that says you agree to be my temporary assistant; for 6 months, until my full time assistant comes back. She's on her maternity leave now." He informed her.
She stared at him, her face blank for the first time since he'd met her.
"You want me to be your assistant." She stated the obvious.
"Yes. So tell me, Khushi Kumari Gupta. Do you agree?" Arnav asked with a devilish glint in his eyes.
"Aap pagal ho? How can you ask someone you've known for 6 minutes to be your assistant for 6 months? How do you know I'm not a murderer? Or a stealer? Or that I won't do ramanchi?" She glared at him.
[Aap pagal ho? - Are you crazy? | Ramanchi? - Cheating?]
He looked at her, amazed. "Raman what?"
She huffed. "Ramanchi. Means cheating." She educated him.
"Khushi" he sighed. "This is my second condition. You have to accept it if you want the sweets deal."
She remained silent.
"If it makes you feel better, I am not pagal. Granted I've just met you, but we have been holding interviews for the position of a temporary assistant for 2 weeks now, since my full timer took leave. But we haven't found anyone yet. I need someone to work for me. You need someone to work for. We'll work together. Being my assistant isn't that hard" he promised.
[Pagal - Crazy]
"You just have to do basic, general things." He made it sound easy. He could see her warming up to the idea. He knew how to sweeten the deal.
"Also, we pay generously." He smiled at her. "The amount you'll get from the sweets will be separate from your salary here."
She squinted at him, looking suspicious. "How much?" She inquired.
As he worked out the amount for the sweets order and her salary separately, her eyes turned rounder and wider than the full moon. She gaped at him for a long moment. He fought the urge to laugh. He hadn't felt like laughing for a long time.
"So much? So much money? Does money grow on trees for you? How can you afford to pay me so much?" Khushi fired questions at him.
"I can pay you lesser if you want.." Arnav trailed off.
"Nono" Khushi jumped in. "That's not what I meant. Who am I to stop you from paying me so much?" She smiled showing her teeth.
"Mmhmm" Arnav hid a smile.
"So, can I assume that you will agree to my conditions?" Arnav locked his fingers together. If she said no..
"Hum pagal thodi hai that I will say no to such a wonderful offer? Hey Devi Maiyya" she put her hands together, raising them up and down three times "You have sent me a farishta from up there." Khushi stared at Arnav in awe. "You are a saint. From today I will call you Baba Arnavji" she declared.
[Hum pagal thodi hai - Am I crazy | farishta - angel]
"What the!" He exclaimed. What was with this girl? First she called him a bad boy and now he was a saint?
"Vaater? Aapko pani chahiye? Ek minute" she dug into her bag. He shook his head, wanting to refuse but..
[Aapko pani chahiye? - Do you want water?]
He watched as she took out one small steel box, and then one plastic bag filled with what looked like.. Chana? And then she took out what he assumed was her Devi Maiyya's idol. Next came out her wallet which looked handmade, and then came out a smaller bag with two saris in it..
[Chana - peas]
"Khushi" he called out as she continued rummaging through her bag. "Bag is for putting things in. Not putting your house in it" he watched with fascination as she kept on producing items from her bag onto his desk. Just what did this woman carry? And how was her bag not torn?
"I know, Arnavji. But my thela is very good. I got it from the market near my house for 250 rupees. But as soon as I saw his smile, hume pata chal gaya ke hum loot gaye. " She frowned. "No more tying rakhis on his hand." She decided as she thought of that salesman.
[thela - bag | hume pata chal gaya ke hum loot gaye - I knew that I'd been looted]
Arnav looked at her, unable to say much. She thought 250 rupees meant being looted?
She finally produced her water bottle and passed it to him. When he looked at it blankly, she urged him to take it. "Aapne kaha na? Vaater" She held out the bottle.
[Aapne kaha na - You asked for it right?]
Only she could turn his what the' into water - no, vaater. He took the bottle and kept it aside, impatience growing. "Khushi, sign the contract" he ordered.
"Jiji" she said and simply stared at him. He looked at her questioningly. Taking a pen from his drawer, he passed it to her.
"Jiji" she repeated. Yes yes? So then why was she not signing it, he wondered.
"Oh ho, Arnavji, my jiji must be waiting for me. Can I talk to her about this offer before signing anything?" She asked politely.
He panicked. What if her jiji refused? He frowned. He didn't want to delay this. "Khushi, I'm afraid time is tight. The offer expires the minute you walk out this door. So if you accept it, you have to sign it. Now." He made it very clear.
"Okay okay." She took the pen and signed the paper, unaware about the sudden increase in her Baba Arnavji's heartbeats. He felt relieved as he saw her sign. Why it was so important to him, he didn't know. Or rather, didn't want to know.
"There" she smiled, passing him his pen and paper. "All done."
He took the paper carefully and looked at her signature, as if needing to check personally that she had indeed signed it. Then he kept the contract in his drawer and locked it before leaning back in his chair looking satisfied.
"Good" he eyed her things as she started stuffing them back into her bag. His gaze lingered on the saris in the smaller bag.
"Why do you have those?" The question came out before he could stop himself. Why did he care about what she carried in her bag?
She simply smiled at him. "Apart from Lucknowi sweets, we also have a side business of saris. We do chikankari work on them. Pure Lucknowi style. " she explained.
His eyes lit up. "That's great!" He exclaimed.
She looked at him in wonder. "You wear saris?" She teased him while he glared at her.
"My family is holding an upcoming prayers. We will need Lucknowi sweets and saris. Do you think you will be able to handle both?"
Khushi flushed with pleasure. "Sacchi? Arnavji, I promise I can deliver. Take a look at the saris." She laid out the saris for his inspection. She watched his expressions closely.
[Sacchi? - Really?]
He paused for a moment. Was he dumping too much on her? The sweets, being his assistant, and now the saris.. Would she be able to concentrate? Was it too much pressure?
Khushi swallowed as she watched him. Was he not confident in her? Would he cancel the contract? "Arnavji" she called out to him. "I can make sweets in my sleep" she informed him "and as for the saris, my jiji and buaji can help. And I'll be your assistant during the day right? Toh raat ko hum mithai banadenge" she assured him.
[Toh raat ko hum mithai banadenge - So I will make the sweets at night]
He broke off from his thoughts. What the - since when did he worry about his employees being under pressure? After all, he did pay them generously.
He looked at her with a serious expression. "Good. I expect nothing but the best" his sudden stern voice confused Khushi.
This man. He needed to smile more. And she would make sure he would.
She started putting her items back in her bag and held a pen.
"Tell me Arnavji" she started.
He looked at her, confused. "Tell you what?"
She looked at him with a blank expression. "Your feelings"
What the! His feelings? How did she know he had feelings for her- wait. He had feelings for her? Sure she was different from the usual clowns he met, sure she was beautiful, innocent, cute and made him want to haul her into his arms and crush her to him and keep her safe but..
"Offo Arnavji. Your illness is seriously affecting your memory. Tell me your order for the sweets!" She tapped her pen against her notebook.
"Oh." He cleared his throat. "Right." He straightened up in his chair. "I want some.." He went on to provide her with the names of sweets he knew his family would want.
Khushi's smile grew with each new order and her heart filled with happiness at having gotten such a big order.
"Thank you Arnavji. I promise you won't be disappointed." Her eyes twinkled at him.
"Can you start work at the office from tomorrow?" He asked impulsively and mentally berated himself. What the hell is wrong with him? Since when did he ask his staff to join work at their convenience? Since when did he wonder if they were under pressure?
Since when did he care?
