When Kangana Ranaut looks back at her career, she smiles with pride. The "Queen" star says that while she has grown strength by strength from B-grade cinema to being the "number one actress of the country", she considers that her contemporaries "have had no growth".

The 28-year-old's post "Queen" phase has seen Kangana featuring in and bagging plum projects -- including "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", "Katti Batti", "Rangoon", "Rani Lakshmibai" and "Simran".

"This is just the beginning," Kangana told IANS in an interview, and added that for the "longest time I was struggling and nothing was falling into place, and I didn't have offers".

"I started from 'B grade films' and today I'm the number one actress of this country... whereas other actresses, whom you might call my contemporaries, they have had no growth in whatever platform they were launched... they are still there and have not risen to another platform," she added.

Without naming anyone, the two-time National Award winner said: "The other actresses, who are called my contemporaries, they started with a megastar. They were superstars overnight, and are the same even today."

Kangana herself earlier harboured dreams of being launched opposite an A-lister. But now she does not feel the need to share screen space with them as she considers herself a "profitable actress".

"Initially, I wanted to do films with A-list actors when I was struggling. I was hoping that I could also get that platform where I'm launched with Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan or Aamir Khan... and with them my career could also start, but it didn't happen. And then came 'Queen'," Kangana said, referring to the life-changing effect that the Vikas Bahl directorial brought for her.

Following that, "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", did well.

"Then why should I be dependent on anyone else," questioned Kangana, and pointed out that she has the capability "to recover the money that has gone into production" of her films.

She is proud that even though success came late to her, it tastes sweeter.

"Now I'm getting the kind of roles I think I deserve," said the actress, who hails from Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, and who belongs to a non-film background.

Starting from her debut film "Gangster - A Love Story" in 2006, Kangana has been appreciated for her performances. She was lauded for her impactful roles in "Fashion" and "Queen".

Kangana will next be seen in "Katti Batti" along with Imran Khan. Directed by Nikhil Advani, the comedy thriller will release on September 18.

she is on coke, because Gangster was anything but a B-grade film. That film was beautiful, and one of Anurag basu and Emraan Hashmi's best. She is calling the film a B grade film may be because she means that Emraan is considered B-grade and she debuted opposite him. Seriously with each passing day, this woman tries my patience, i want to think in a mild way about her craziess but her statements and her attitude of putting others down makes me loathe her some more.

Gangster was indeed a "B-grade movie" because there was B-list actors and the Bhatt production house wasn't that prestigious and was more notorious for its sensual movies (if I can call them like this).
BUT it was a very good B-grade movie. The story was gripping, the acting was great, the songs very good and the direction was very good too.
I remember that I watched it as a filler but then I just had to watch more movies with Kangna, Shiney and Emraan, I was excited about Anurag Basu's next projects. I loved Life in a .. Metro but was utterely disappointed by Kites though.

Also note that she's talking about films (plural) ; it might include Shakalaka Boom Boom and Woh Lahme too (though the latter turned out really good).

Do not see it as her looking down on her previous work but more like her acknoledging that she now has more choice regarding the directors and actors with whom she can work.

She said she started from B grade movies, she didn't say that gangster was B grade
And Kangana did star in some awful B grade movies throughout her career

Its indicated that the article is old so it implies Kangana was crazy since long. Gangster wasnt a B grade at all and wasnt Raaz-2 B grade?

She is quoted to have said "Without naming anyone, the two-time National Award winner said: "The other actresses, who are called my contemporaries, they started with a megastar. They were superstars overnight, and are the same even today.""

🤣 what is she saying, the contemporary actresses were super stars overnight and are still the same!!
Well thats a wonderful compliment, those actresses are still superstars, WOW, they have sustained their success, awesome. Kudos to them!

If you think Gangster, Woh Lamhe were B grade, then you have no idea about B grade films! 😆

She's right though. The likes of Deepika, Sonam and Anushka were always offered roles opposite Akshay, SRK, Ranbir... A listers while she was struggling to get some parts.
I don't think she's looking down on these actresses but only stating a fact.
