Chapter 35
TIME IS LIKE SAND, THE MORE YOU WANT TO HOLD IT TIGHT, THE MORE IT SLIPS THROUGH YOUR FINGERS.
Every single person goes through a certain time when they wish they could freeze time. Like others, Jalaal and Jodha also craved for the time to stop moving and just freeze right then and there, where they were still in the same continent and not too far from each other. The obvious fear of separation lead to their desire to freeze the time forever...the feeling of not knowing when the next time they would see each other and in what situation, increased the pain even more. The uncertainty of their future was driving both of them nuts. But at the same time they were both ready to face the reality of life for their better prospect, they wanted to stay calm and composed for each other so the other doesn't freak out. They were both trying their hardest to mask their own emotions to keep the other happy. They were so deeply in love with each other that the pain they were feeling was not for themselves but for each other. In such a short period of time their love excelled to next level. For them the happiness of the other was more important than their own feelings.
Jalaal on the way to his sister's house on Wednesday after school.
While driving, many thoughts ran through his mind. No doubt, he was excited for his better future, but at the same time...when time came closer and closer, he doubted himself on his decision. The feeling of leaving everything behind including his love was the most difficult and scary thing for him. The unknown of tomorrow somewhat saddened him. He inhaled deeply to come out of his sorrow and diverted his mind towards his dear, loving, and caring sister, and their phone conversation. He was in dilemma and confusion about why she suddenly wanted to see him? Even though she knew that he was running out of time... and trying to catch up and finish last minute tasks, she somewhat insistently asked him to visit her. It's not her usual style, she always puts me first than her... Hope it's nothing serious.
He rang the bell while taking off his helmet and rolled his sunglasses over his head.
Neeta yelled "Wait... I am coming." She quickly turned the gas off, washed her hands and ran to the door. She was more excited than usual since she knew her little brother is coming to see her for the last time before going.
She unlocked the door, with her usual happy smile and saw her handsome, good looking brother in his favorite yellow shirt and Levis Jean, holding helmet in his hand. She tried to engrave his picture like this in her mind, since this is last time he came to her home before leaving. She was equally sad, feeling as if a part of her heart is leaving.
"So, how are your preparations going Jalaal?? Are you all set?? Is all your shopping done??" Neeta asked him casually while fixing her sari pallu, as he came in and sat on the sofa.
"Yes, mostly everything is done, but you how good I am in packing, final packing anyhow you can do when you come on Friday."Jalal stated while relaxing his legs on the sofa.
"Of course, I will do your final packing."
"Where are Jiju and kids??" Jalaal asked looking around the empty house.
"As always... he is late... you know how your Jiju is, must be on the way. Kids went to the market to get some stuff, they'll be back soon." She complained lightly.
Ohh... Diii... You still think that I am a little kid...' A hint of amusing smirk curved his lips at the thought. Of course I know... you purposely called me at this time so no one is home. Hmm, definitely there is something important that she wants to discuss with me alone..' Jalaal concluded while measuring her expression.
Coming straight to the point he asked in concerned tone "By the way Didi what did you want to talk to me about?? You specially asked me come here today so you won't have to talk in front of Bhabhi. What's going on??"
At first she hesitated and fumbled to find the correct words, "Uhh nothing...nothing's going on!!" She stuttered. "Let me get you some tea??" She said and hurriedly ran towards the kitchen.
Instead of worrying, Jalal found her nervousness and the way she quickly sneaked to kitchen, amusing. Aroma of the ginger and mint tea spread through the living room.
Few minutes later she brought hot tea with some cookies and his favorite homemade samosas. She served him tea and samosas with a nervous smile.
"Di I am going to miss these samosas in US." Jalal stated while picking the samosa from the plate.
"That is why I made it just for you, and now every time I will make samosa I will think about you Jalal." She took a deep breath in to control her emotions.
Jalal sensed the pain in her tone... to change the topic he came to the point once again and asked straightforward, "Come on Di, I know you...something is definitely going on. Tell me why are you so nervous?? What's bothering you??"
"You know me well Jalal," she paused for a brief moment and continued while knotting the corner of her pallu in her finger. "Uhhh What are your plans for marriage??" She cautiously asked.
Oh no, not you too Di! Bhabhi is enough as it is.' Jalaal irritably thought. "I don't have any plans, why??" He asked dryly, annoyance in his sound was clear.
"Jalal don't get upset, Actually Bhabhi insisted that I talk to you and make you choose one of her relative's daughter whom she likes before you go. She wanted me to talk to you and convince you in front of everyone when I come there and as I don't think this is the right thing to do and that too in haste, that's why I decided to call you here and talk, so we can freely talk. Now I'm about to say something that I didn't want to say in front of her because I know she won't like it or agree with me, hence I asked you to come here." She told him.
Jalaal felt a bit irritated listening to her, he was already not happy with his Bhabhi being constantly after him for marriage and now she asked his sister to do the same too. So before she could say anything else Jalaal spoke "Di now is not a good time for choosing a girl, I don't know when I'll come back so how long can I ask a girl to wait for me, plus it adds extra pressure on me. I want to get settled in US first then think about all these things. I don't want to go with any extra burden on my mind." He tried to convince his sister and push the topic aside for now.
"Listen to me first, I am not asking you to choose a girl and that's why I have called you here to talk" she determinedly told him.
"What do you mean Di??" Jalaal asked feeling confused.
"Well I don't really agree with her, I don't want you to choose a girl out of the girls she has chosen for you. You should be able to choose a girl of your own choice, it should be your choice entirely. This is the biggest decision of your life and you should have full freedom to choose anyone you want. She should not interfere or force you to choose someone she likes or wants." She paused to gaze at Jalaal's expression. When she saw him smiling she skeptically said "Unless of course you asked her to find a girl for you. In that case I would...you didn't ask her to find a girl for you, did you??" She asked confused.
Jalaal smiled at his sister lovingly and replied "Of course not, why would I ask her?? If I wanted someone else to find a girl for me then that would have been you, I would have definitely asked you Di, but I..." He left the sentence incomplete purposely with a mysterious smirk on his face.
Neeta raised her eyebrows and skeptically asked him... even though she knew what he was indicating at, it took her a moment to grasp what he meant, at first she asked in a calm tone, "What do you mean by would have asked'?? You sound like you don't need to find a girl anymore, like you have already found someone..." but her own words suddenly sparkled her mind,
she got very excited and cheerily asked "Omg... I can't believe it!!! Have you found someone?? Where did you meet her?? Can I meet her too?? What's her name?? Why didn't you tell me before??" As she continued, her tone changed to accusatory "You are leaving tomorrow...were you even planning on telling me before leaving??" Then her tone became worried "Will she wait for you till you come back?? What about her family, will they allow her to wait for you??" Without thinking much she threw a bunch of questions at him in excitement.
She asked so many questions in one breath leaving Jalaal wide eyed and astonished. He kept staring at her with his mouth open.
As Jalaal's silence irritated Neeta, she asked in edgy tone once again, "Will you just say something!!"
Her voice snapped Jalaal out of his frozen state and he immediately spoke "Wow Di so many questions at once, I didn't know you could speak so much in one breath. Wow Di, you are amazing." He teased her.
"Jalaal first you didn't tell me about her and now you are teasing me. I'm already mad at you for not telling me, so delaying any further will make me even more mad. You better spill the beans quickly if you want to save yourself from me." She threatened him impatiently while moving next to him
Jalaal just smiled sheepishly and held his hands up in surrender while saying "Alright alright I'm telling. So many questions...where should I start from??" Then he dreamily continued "I'm not sure if you would approve of her but her name is JODHA, she is very sweet and nice."
"Why wouldn't I approve?? The look that you have on your face right now, is in itself enough to make me love her. How could you think I won't like your choice??" She quickly dismissed his concerns.
"But Di she is not from our religion..."
"I know that!!"
"What!! How do you know??" Jalaal asked confused.
"As soon as you told her name I understood." She smiled. "But it doesn't matter to me what religion she is from, as long as you both are happy I'll be happy too." She paused to see Jalaal's happy face but she could tell he was still worried about something. So she continued to talk... "Tell me more, where did you meet her??"
"I met her in school.." Jalaal cautiously whispered in dim tone.
"Ohh so she is a teacher??" She guessed without thinking much.
"Umm... uhhh..."Jalal inhaled deeply then responded "Actually... no she's..." Jalaal hesitated, not knowing how she will react to this information.
"She's what??" She asked curiously.
"Sheisastudent..." He mumbled so fast that she didn't understand at all.
"What?? She's a what??" She asked.
"A student..." He grumbled slowly. He was dreading her impending reaction.
Silence prevailed.
Jalaal looked up at his sister to find out why there wasn't any reaction. He found her completely frozen from shock with her mouth wide open.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
COUPLE OF HOURS LATER
It's almost 10:30 why hasn't he called yet?? Every minute feels like an era... Hope everything's fine.' Jodha worriedly thought.
Soon enough her phone rang and she quickly picked up. "Where have you been?? You know how long I've been waiting for your call!!" Jodha furiously asked Jalaal while her fingers were playing with the hem of her T-Shirt.
Hmmm her temper is heated.' "Actually Jodha..." he briefly paused and inhaled loudly "I came home late, went to Didi's house in the evening, she had called me." Jalaal spoke in very dull voice.
Hearing his tone Jodha worriedly asked "What happened?? Is everything okay?? You sound so dull!!"
"I told her about us." Jalaal said in clipped tone.
"What???? You told her what??" Jodha asked impatiently.
"About us Jodha" He sadly answered.
"Oh... You did!! What did she say??" Jodha asked as her heartbeats increased in anticipation of his reply.
"Ahhh...She wasn't happy, she thinks you are too young for me and I should forget about you..." Jalaal spoke mechanically without expressions.
"What??????" Jodha asked in disbelief. Her heart broke hearing him.
They were both quiet. Jodha was too shocked to say anything.
"Jodha??" Jalaal questioned after some time.
"Oh god!!! What did you say???? What are we going to do??" Jodha dimly asked. She was on the verge of crying.
"What can we do, but of course I have to follow what she said!!" Jalaal replied seriously.
"What????" Jodha yelled. "Are you telling me you will forget me?? Is it so easy for you to forget me??" She almost shouted angrily, he was able to hear her heavy breathing over the phone.
"What can I do?? I can't choose you over my sister..." Jalaal continued in an impassive, but composed tone, without realizing that Jodha has now started crying.
"You know what... Do whatever you like... and for your information, I have never asked you to choose me over her or anyone else for that matter, but you could have atleast tried to make her understand...You haven't even left yet and you are saying like this, what will you do once you actually leave?? Anyway if that's how easy it is for you to forget me then fine!!" Jodha angrily hung up the phone without even giving him a chance to speak up. After hanging up the phone she hid her face in the pillow and started crying.
Do I have no value?? Does my love have no value?? He doesn't care about me... Is it a game for him?? Has he been pretending all these days?? How could he say that so easily to me?? How can he even think about forgetting me??' Jodha's mind raised all these questions in merely few seconds. She kept crying. She just couldn't stop.
Ohh God! It's been 15 minutes, why is she not picking up the phone?? What have I done?? In my teasing mood I didn't even realize when she started crying?? Now she is so mad at me that she isn't even picking up my call. What an idiot I am, I made her cry just before leaving. What will I do if she didn't talk to me?? How will I contact her now?? Please Jaan, I'm so sorry...please pickup the phone, please please please. What was I thinking??' Jalaal kept cursing himself and regretting about his behavior while dialing her number over and over again hoping for her to pick it up. With each second passing Jalaal was panicking more and more.
What's that noise??' Jodha thought to herself. She looked here and there and finally realized that it was the sound of the phone ringing. She scowled and wondered since when has it been ringing. It must be him. Why is he calling me now??' She angrily thought. While she contemplated if she should pick up the phone or not it stopped ringing. As soon as it stopped ringing she realized that she wanted to pick it up, a small hope flared in her heart. Maybe he still wants me...that's why he's calling.' Her face was tear stricken yet a small smile tugged on her lips. She couldn't imagine her life without him but his words from earlier haunted her and made her sad and angry once again and her smile vanished.
The phone rang again and this time she picked it up quickly but before she could say anything she heard him say "Thank God you picked up the phone, I have been calling you for so long..."
"Why??" Jodha interrupted. "I thought you wanted to forget me so why are you calling me now??" She angrily questioned.
Her hoarse voice made Jalaal realize that she has been crying the whole time...he silently cursed himself yet again and quickly started apologizing "I'm so so so sorry Jaan I was just teasing you, I didn't mean any of that."
"What??" Jodha asked perplexed.
"I just thought...no actually I wasn't thinking...at all..."
"Is this a joking matter?? You clearly told me you don't want to be with me anymore." Jodha shrieked.
"Sorry Jaan, please forgive me. I was just too happy that Didi agreed... I didn't realize when my joke turned serious. I'm so sorry, I've been so worried about you since you hung up on me. I love you so much I would never leave you for anyone. I feel terrible for making you feel that I don't want to be with you because the truth is I'll die without you, I can't imagine my life without you even for a second. Please forgive me..." He pleaded once again.
His pleas and regretful tone made Jodha realize that he is being truthful. Relief flooded through her at the realization but she still asked "You are sure you want to be with me??" Her voice hopeful.
"Yes of course. I love you so much Jaan, don't you ever think I don't want to be with you. Without you I would be like a fish without water. I really wish I could be there with you right now, so I could hold you tightly in my arms, kiss you, assure you that I'm yours and you are mine, and that's how it's always going to be. I'm never ever going to leave you." Jalaal firmly replied. "Think about it, you are my Jaan, can anyone survive without their Jaan??"
Hearing all this from him made Jodha feel a little better. She was still upset but relieved. A small smile tugged on her lips hearing his sweet talk.
"Jaan...Jaan??" He called when she didn't say anything for some time. "Are you okay?? Please don't cry...I'm yours, forever and ever. No one and nothing can ever separate us, do you understand?? Don't ever doubt that!!"
"You will not forget about me after leaving, will you??" Jodha asked still feeling insecure.
"No, never!!" He firmly replied. What have I done?? My small little teasing made her so sad and insecure. She was already sad with me leaving and I made it worse.' He badly regretted his behavior and felt really mad and frustrated at himself.
"Jaan I'm so sorry. Please, please forgive me!!" He apologized once again.
"Stop apologizing... I don't like it. Just don't ever say you want to forget me. Please." She pleaded.
"Never Jaan, never again." Then he suddenly started singing
Tu tu hai wahi dil ne jise apna kaha ...
Tu hai jahaan main hoon vahaan
Ab to jeena tere bin hai saza
Ho mil jaaye is tarah ...
Do lehren jis tarah ...
Phir ho na juda
Haan ye vaada raha
(You you are the one (that) my heart calls my own (mine)
I'm where you are
Now a life without you (living without you ) is (like) a punishment.
oh let's get together like two waves (of the sea)
Let's not get apart again
Yes that's a promise.)
Kisi mod pe bhi na ye saath toote
Mere haath se tera daaman na chhoote
Kabhi khwaab mein bhi tu mujhse na roothe
Mere pyar ki koi khushiyaan na loote
(At no point of time shall we fall apart
My hand (I) won't let go of you
May you never get cross with me even in (my) dreams
let no one rob me of my love's bliss)
"I love you!!" Jodha got so happy hearing him sing such beautiful words for her that without even realizing, the words just flew out of her mouth.
"I love you too Jaan, so so so sooo much!" Jalaal ecstatically replied.
"I wish you were here... I am missing you so much and that's why I got so angry without even thinking, I am really sorry for not trusting you... my heart was not ready to believe but don't know how my mind took over and overreacted. I am really sorry for shouting at you... I love you so much that I can't explain in words."
"Don't apologize Jaan, I was also stupid and dragged so much without realizing what you might think. I would never joke like this again. I promise. Love U Jaan... I wish I was there to wipe your tears and comfort you in my cuddle."
Jodha blushed heavily at his romantic desire "So what's the plan for tomorrow?? What time will you reach here??" She asked dimly, diverting the topic from sensual to casual.
"Since I have to come straight to your house after school finishes at 1pm, I should be able to reach around 1:30pm or so I think. I'll return your notebook and give you your ring."Jalal informed his plan in a wavering tone, his heartbeats quickened at the sudden realization that it's their last meeting...He inhaled intently.
"Hmmm. What about lunch?? If you come straight, when are you going to have lunch??" Jodha asked concerned.
"I'll have it later don't worry." Jalaal dismissed her concern.
"But..." Jodha tried to argue.
"No buts, don't worry I will eat after I leave from your house. No big deal." Jalal responded in a insisting tone.
"Why don't you have lunch here?? With me??" She asked petulantly.
"What?? No!! I don't think that's a good idea." Jalal tried to make her understand in a soft tone. I don't want to take any risk... I am leaving in a day, if anyone sees us or doubts, she will end up facing the consequences alone. No, I can't take any chance.'
"Yes it is. Please have lunch with me." Jodha insisted stubbornly.
"No Jaan try to understand, how can I have lunch there!! What will you say at home??" Jalal reasoned calmly.
"I don't know, I'll think of something. I really want to have lunch together before you go. Pleeeaaase!" She almost pleaded.
It was a very tempting offer and Jalaal wanted to say yes too but he was worried about the future consequences that it could have.
"I know you want to have lunch with me too, don't think too much, nothing will happen, it's just lunch." Jodha was ready to take any risk... she wanted to savor their time together.
"Maybe nothing will happen now and no one will think much of it now but later when we will talk about marriage they might remember this...what if they get mad then??" Jalal argued strictly.
"I'll think of something convincing!! No one will remember after some time anyway. Just say yes, please please please." She requested in a pleading tone.
"Okay, fine!! Just be careful." Jalaal reluctantly agreed on her insistence.
"Thank you thank you thank you!!" Jodha excitedly said.
"Why are you saying thank you?? I would love to have lunch with you too. I'm just worried, I don't want you to get in any trouble especially while I'm not here."
"I know, but right now I just want to spend some time with you without any worries. We'll worry later." Then in sad tone she whispered "Anyway we don't even know when we will meet after tomorrow." Word slipped from her month which straight came out from her heart.
"Soon Jaan very soon. This tough time will pass quickly and I'll be back to take you with me before you know it." Jalaal instantly responded before the moment turned into sadness, he tried cheering her up.
"Hmmm" Jodha murmured quietly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They both felt helpless as their time together was running out. The uncertainty of the future was scaring them but they were trying their best to face everything bravely while keeping their focus on reaching the future where they will be together and officially each other's forever and ever.
