Not Understanding Dev's Character

Hi All,
I am enjoying the show and very much like Shaheer and Erica as the leads. But I do not understand Dev's thought process.

1. If he has shown so much maturity and patience as a boy, why he is so immature and impatient with Sona? He is always blaming her for everything without even trying to find out what happened. Do we talk to our staff like that?

2. If he forced Sona out of job to take up job at his place, why he cannot be respectful and polite to Sona? He should try to prove to Sona that he is truly a good employer and this is the best job for her. At least he can make up for his past high handed and selfish behavior.

3. When he knows Sona has gone on a personal meeting, why he is bothering her by calling her so many times? He is a well established businessman. He should know about etiquette and courtesy, and know how to treat his employees.

4. If he can be so polite and kind towards everyone, why he is so rude and unkind towards Sona? That girl is here for his mom's sake. Isn't he suppose to make sure that she has the right environment and tools to work there?

5. The biggest question that bothers me - if he is so concerned about his mother and her health why he did not bother to check if Khatri still lived in that neighborhood? If that man has given Ishwari so much trouble in the past, why bring her back to the neighborhood where that man lives. This was a very BAD and POOR decision by him. His mother will have health issue due to that man. What will he do then? Blame Sona for that just like what he is doing now?

I think CVs need to clearly think about his character before writing the script for the episodes. A responsible, loving caring person like Dev cannot be so selfish, rude and inhuman towards a nice and professionally committed girl like Sona. There is total inconsistency in sketching his character.

Your thoughts?

Well to be honest Sona also invites trouble to herself by being too nice n good hearted n committed for her own good.
If you take slap on one cheek and offer another cheek what will you get ?? Only another slap.
This is not fair but this is how the world works . Only fighters can survive n thrive here.
I don't think his character writing is inconsistent . I think its a deliberate attempt by the CVs to present him as an extremely damaged guy in the beginning in the show so that there's some scope for character arc . Some space to change develop n repair.
Kudos to Shaheer for portraying this role so realistically. In the hand of any less capable n less charming actor this same character would have appeared outright intolerable.

As for him buying this house at such a unfavorable place may be he thought Khetri has moved to some other place as it was long ago. Plus he also might have thought that his house is well secured so Kh won't be able to trespass inside the house.
He's lots of childhood memories of struggle in this place. He has certain emotional n sentimental attachment to this place. He may be a shrewd businessman but he has been shown to lack common sense when personal matters are concerned.
Whether be it hiring Sona forcefully for a ridiculous job or hiring a tutor without prior consulting with Neha to putting blames on Sona where she does not have the slightest of fault... he refuses to use his brain at times. It's just him. He'll grow n change n become a more mature n sensible person with time.
At least so I hope.

Yes I agree Sona takes that crap but she cannot be completely blamed for that. She was made helpless by the script. CVs showed how Dev took away her job by false accusation, then influenced other hospitals to not to accept her. At home, her father was shown to cough on the phone when trying to set up a job interview. After Sona agreed to take up the job, his cough has vanished. And he looks quite hale and hearty just like Dev's mom, but he is sitting at home idle and tasting his wife's cooking doing nothing. Her brother is shown not being able to keep his jobs due to fights over trivial issues of 'fish curry' over'chicken'.

CVs brought her in as a sprightly fighter girl but took away the rug from under her feet, giving Dev all the power of a Superman and gave him all the tools to take advantage of her helplessness. He is doing this to her because he knows her family is useless and she desperately needs the money. She is taking all this crap from him and his mom just to keep her job.

I often hear girls being mistreated in India, and there is a lot of truth in it. What is not true is the fact that the same girl can fall in love with a boss who is so heartless and uncaring about her. I find Dev's character inconsistent because the same person with so much love for his mother and sisters does not care about anyone outside his small family. Be it Sona or be it is Mami-Mama.

Yesterday's episode showed that Mami-Mama gave them shelter when they were in adversity. How Dev can be so unkind to Vicky in public I don't know. At least for the sake of his Mama-Mami he can be a little kind towards Vicky. If he is so concerned about Vicky's mistakes and thinks he should be punished for committing mistakes, then what about his behavior towards Sona. Falsely accusing her and taking the job away from her was a big crime and he should be punished for that.

Even if I accept what you say that CVs need to develop his character, so they are trying to leave some flaws in his character, it is still unacceptable to me that they always try to do this at the expense of the female lead. By showing her as the punchbag and doormat. If Sona is taking all this crap from him and his mom now, I can only imagine what will happen after their wedding.

Regarding coming back to the same neighborhood, I don't think he should have done that. It has bad memories. And he should have verified about Khetri. He has money, power, men to find about about neighborhoods, neither he is stupid. Yes, I can understand if their new neighbor is a bad guy, who is trying to harm them, but knowingly why would someone come back to an old neighborhood with painful memories, specially if they had more choices. All the past episodes don't show great flashbacks of the old neighborhood. Khatri trying to harm Dev's mom, boys making fun of Dev's poverty by sprinkling colors on his only school uniform, Ishwari working as a housemaid, owner yelling at her for breaking the vase - are any of these nice memories? Ishwari cannot even venture out of the house.

This is totally out of logic and a bad plot and setting by the CVs. No logic there. Only logic is they wanted to create a villain along with the other characters.

No complaints against Shaheer. He is doing a fine job and I watch the show because of him and Erica.😊

Guys I have 2 things to say. Yes, Dev has been deliberately sketched in a way to portray this very damaged person who can be shrewd outside but at inside a very fragile human and I think this is what he is at the moment but it will be love that will heal him and make him a better person.
Sona is indeed very nice and someone said it is unrealistic to see her fall for someone so harsh and cruel towards her. What I can say about this is by quoting Shakespeare.

"Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind."

Sona will see the inner Dev. The one who did anything for his mom and she will heal him with his love. At least thats what I'm getting from this concept. And that is why it is bringing a new shade of love. She will become his backbone, his support system and his everything and will transform him but when it comes to his Mom, he will not disobey her.

I haven't watched the show regularly so my opinions may be a bit off, but I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.

1. After Sona took the job, he's generally been nice to her. I mean, there's obviously some friction between them, but that's that. He just started to get a little annoyed when she started interfering in his private life, i.e. buying him a shirt. He wants to keep the relationship professional. But he doesn't realize that keeping Sona in his house will quickly make the relationship turn personal rather than keep it professional. And he doesn't blame her for everything. When Ishwari first got sick after eating all that horribly fattening food she made after dismissing the cook, Dev didn't immediately blame Sona. It was only afterwards when Sona kept quiet that he blamed her. Even then, it's kinda understandable. He didn't know the cook had been dismissed and thought Sona had failed her job.

2. Said earlier, he's generally respectful to her and keeps his distance. But when it comes to his mother, he cannot think straight.

3. Did he know she was gone on a personal leave? I mean, I don't remember Sona telling Dev? But yeah, he felt as if she didn't do her job properly. She just left without leaving food for his mom (it's his fault tho he didn't notice the list on the kitchen). He was rude there I agree.

4. Regarding his behaviour with Sona. I just don't think he's used to someone constantly challenging him like she does. So he behaves by lashing out. In general, I feel like Dev's childhood scarred him in more ways than one. Both Dev and Neha are extremely defensive people who feel like they're always being attacked by others, even when they aren't. So their tendency is to lash out. A good example would be when Sona first told him she got some tests done on his mother and that he wasn't taking care of her. (Sidenote, that was pretty rude of Sona to insinuate he wasn't taking good care of his mother). Sona was probably making a general statement but Dev took it as her attacking him and he responded back harshly.

5. I don't think Dev really knows what happened with Khatri. I doubt Ishwari has told anyone that Khatri tried to molest her. So it makes sense that Dev didn't realize he lived there/ it was a big deal that Khatri lived there. He's only realizing it now, seeing Ishwari's reaction.

I agree in that Dev's character is definitely pretty rude and brash. But I also think it's pretty fitting for the way he's been brought up. Neha and Dev are both damaged people and its reflective in the way they treat people. Neha is shy with others because she hasn't been outside that much and doesn't have much experience tehre, but she's harsh with her family members because those are the people she's always been around. Dev is the opposite. He's nice to his family members but he's much harsher towards strangers. Probably because he went to school/ got educated/ spent more time with strangers and had to bear their taunts and hence developed a harsh skin around them.

I also think Dev is kinda emulating the behaviour he saw growing up. Like in that flashback scene where Ishwari broke her employers vase when she caught Dev skipping school to teach him a lesson, the employer was kinda mean. So we can presume that Dev and his family were treated like dirt because of their poor status by many others and he witnessed how people with money were treated differently and treated others. Hence once he got money, he basically treats people like disposable entities. Sona's right when she talks about how Dev thinks money means he can treat people like dirt.

Well said. But it is too cliched storyline. There have been multiple such love stories where the male lead is shown as rough and unkind to the female lead and slowly changes with love from the female lead. But Dev comes across as a gentleman, so I don't understand CV's portrayal of him as rude and unkind towards Sona. She is working in his home, taking care of his mom, he should be courteous to her.

I must say this is a very good analysis. Specially the last two paragraphs @bold is making sense to me. Thanks for taking the time to rationalize his behavior. Although I still think his behavior towards Sona is not befitting his stature specially he is the one who forced Sona to work at his place. He should try to find out before making accusations. Any person with common sense will do that. I agree that in some cases Sona provoked him by her interfering and feisty behavior but Sona has the decency and humility to say sorry also. She said she is sorry to have misunderstood him. But he never says sorry to her for blaming her without knowing the fact nor for his mother's misbehavior.

Regarding Khatri I am not convinced. He seemed to have known about her. But I will leave it there.

I guess he will at some point of time realize and say sorry to her. Until that time we have to accept him as a deeply scarred person from inside like you said who only cares about his own family and no one else. I just find it very disturbing to see him like this but will bear with it.

@juhi emotional scars are hard to heal. Any physical injury it will heal. Because we can see it, apply medicine and then with time it heals.
Problem with emotional scars is that we don't know where is the problem. We cannot see them. And so we don't know their existence. Healing an emotional scar needs lot of introspection. For that first you need to accept you are emotionally scarred. Then the healing process will start. It always need a loving person. In Dev's case a loving understanding woman who is emotionally balanced and in Neha's case a man who has his emotions controlled.
Dev is not any criminal. He is a product of a system. A system that doesn't know to treat poor well, a system that has no humanity. If Dev has to change for me when he has nothing wealth or power someone has to love him, stand by him. Showing him the world is not that bad.
