The last time Sunny came in his famous action avatar for a film was SINGH SAHAB THE GREAT, which re-united him with director Anil Sharma (perhaps the most popular director-actor jodi Sunny Deol has had in his career). The film took a 6 crore opening and opened better than the film Karan Johar produced, GORI TERE PYAR MEIN which starred Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Sunny is back in his action avatar and this time, he doesn't have a clash. There is the GHAYAL brand advantage as well as the first film from 1990 was a phenomenal box office success. Therefore, I feel that GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN will have a better opening than SINGH SAHAB THE GREAT.
However, much like SINGH SAHAB THE GREAT, I feel that GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN will also flop in the long run. GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN also seems out-dated, similar to how SSTG felt. Also, GOA deals with an old storyline and the audience won't be too fascinated seeing Sunny Deol doing yet another similar role as to what he has been doing for the majority of the past 20+ years. The audience tends to get tired, and that is why Sunny Deol has lost his steam at the box office 2004 onwards. THE HERO was probably the last Sunny Deol film to generate a lot of hype, and even that film didn't perform too well. 2001 was his last year as one of the biggest stars in India, as GADAR remains one of the biggest blockbusters ever of Hindi cinema and his INDIAN that year defeated Shah Rukh Khan's ASOKA in a clash.
Flash forward to 2016, and Sunny is no longer as popular. He has been regularly a part of the Ormax Media top 10 popular male stars, but it has not been reflecting at the box office as one film after another of his has been flopping.
When Salman Khan, the most popular Bollywood male star in India, couldn't make an out-dated feeling JAI HO work at the box office in 2014, how can Sunny Deol, who's popularity is probably a quarter of Salman Khan's today, make GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN (similar out-dated feel type film) work at the box office in 2016?
GOA will perform a bit better in North India (where Sunny still has a strong fan following) and some mass centers, but that won't be enough!
