Chapter Two

For her, it was like the world had stopped when she came face to face with him in the NASA headquarters. Her heart was either beating so fast that it would pop out of her chest, or it was dead from being in too much pain. How could the emotions of two years ago come back, just like that? The same pain, the same love, the same heartbreak? Had she really not moved on?

"First I will take you on a tour of the headquarters," Randhir started, "Then I will tell you the expectations of this place."

His eyes darted from Sanyukta to the other boy.

"Okay," the boy said with a nod.

"What are your names?" Randhir asked, glancing back at Sanyukta.

"Aryan," the boy said right away. "I'm here to work in the programming section."

Randhir then glanced at Sanyukta inquisitively, asking her with his eyes who she was. It was like she was a stranger to him.

"And your name?" Randhir asked her, his tone neutral.

"S - Sanyukta," she replied, glancing down so he wouldn't see the tears that invaded her eyes.

"Nice to meet you two," he said, and then stood up straight. "Alright, follow me."

As he took them on a tour, leading the way, he didn't bother to glance back at the two of them.

Sanyukta was trying hard to avoid Aryan's gaze, because he was just going to indicate with his face that she had to be confident. He didn't know the truth about Randhir and her.

How could she tell him that Randhir had once been her biggest weakness?

"This is the canteen," he explained to them, as he stepped inside a big room. "They make meals fresh here. A lot of people come here on their breaks to have tea."

Randhir didn't. He worked through his break. He didn't give himself time to relax, because relaxing only meant that his mind would wander. He couldn't let his mind wander... because it would certainly wander to her.

How could he forget that Sanyukta had once been his biggest weakness?

Randhir lead them through the rest of the building. There was no expression on his face, and he did not allow himself to glance back at her... he didn't trust himself to not give way to his emotions.

Finally, when they arrived back in the main room, where they were working on the project, he turned around to face them, deciding that now wasn't the time to turn his back to her. It would show that he cared a lot... and he couldn't show that to anyone, especially not to himself.

"Okay, so now for the expectations," he started, his voice monotone.

"R - Randhir s - sir," Sanyukta said, and he could tell that she was trying to keep a steady tone... but it clearly wasn't working. She was never one to hide her emotions.

"You don't have to call me sir. I'm not your boss... just a team leader," he told her, and he couldn't stop the accusatory glance at her when he said the word leader.

After all, she had been a team leader, and it was because of that their relationship slowly began to falter.

"S - sorry," she apologized, her voice cracking, and she was looking down at the ground unable to face him. "I - I just want to use the washroom for a moment. I - Is that okay?"

Aryan looked at Sanyukta, looking concerned. Randhir didn't miss this. He glanced at Aryan, and observed the way he was looking at Sanyukta.

"No," Randhir said simply, and Sanyukta didn't even look up.

"What?" Aryan interrupted, sounding outraged. "She wants to use the washroom! Why can't she?"

Randhir's plan worked. He only said no to see if this Aryan would react... and he did. Aryan liked her.

Did she like him too? Had they confessed? Were they in a relationship?

For some reason, the thought of her liking Aryan bothered him, but he didn't let it show. After all, it was her life. Who was he to meddle?

"Go ahead," he finally said, and she nodded, before placing a hand to her mouth and practically running out of there.

As Sanyukta ran to the bathroom, she locked herself in a stall and burst out crying.

She had never expected this. She knew Randhir probably hated her, but she never expected him to treat her like a stranger. And all of this was so sudden... how was she supposed to go through everyday like this, facing him like a stranger, like they had no past?

As she took a deep breath and wiped her tears, to compose herself, she felt her heart drop again as another round of tears started and she began to sob uncontrollably.

"Th - this hurts," she cried. "It hurts to be a stranger to you when we shared so much before."

Finally, she forced herself to get a hold of herself, even though her heart was aching with pain.

She slowly walked back over to the two of them. Randhir was already busy explaining the expectations, and didn't even look up when she arrived. It made her heart hurt again.

Finally when he finished, he took them to the machines and looked at Sanyukta.

"You can rewire this machine. It stopped working a few days ago and nobody has gotten around to doing it," he said simply, before turning to Aryan. "And you can use that computer over there to program the test robot. There's a team already there. You can help them for now. They'll get you started."

Aryan glanced at Sanyukta with concern, knowing that Sanuykta was scared to do anything related to machines. She didn't mention that her job here wasn't of an engineer.

"Her role isn't of an engineer," he said when she failed to speak up.

Randhir looked at him with disbelief. If Sanyukta had a problem then she had her own voice to speak up. Why was Aryan even making a comment about her job? And of course she had to be here as an engineer. What else would she be here for?

"I - I am here as an engineer," she finally said, looking up to see Randhir's confused expression. "I will work on the machine."

She couldn't show Randhir what he had done to her. She couldn't show him that the old Sanyukta Agarwal was lost somewhere, and perhaps she had drowned too deep already, too deep underwater to ever see the surface again.

Along with being her biggest weakness, Randhir had been her biggest strength too after all.

Aryan was now shocked. Had she agreed to do something that Aryan could never convince her to do? Why had she done that?

"Okay then," Randhir said simply. "I have my own work to do too then. If you have any questions, I'll be over there by that machine."

He pointed across the room. Sanyukta noticed that her machine was just one table away from Randhir's. It was just the way they used to do it in college.

Aryan reluctantly went over to the software programming area as Randhir and Sanyukta quietly made their way to their own machines.

Sanyukta glanced at the machine she had to work on and fear took over her body. Her hands began to shake and she gulped. How was she going to do this?

She touched the machine and memories of the past replayed in her head. Squeezing her eyes shut, she forced herself to breathe. She had to do this. She had to show Randhir that she could do it. She couldn't let herself drop anymore in his eyes.

Randhir who was busy working on his own machine, glanced to the side and noticed that her eyes were squeezed shut. What was happening to her? Her fingers were shaking too.

Why did he care?

He turned back to his own machine and began to work on it. After a minute though, his heart started to beat erratically and he glanced up at her again. His eyes nearly popped out of their sockets when he saw that she was connecting one wire to the wrong outlet, and if she did that it would cause a blast.

"Are you out of your mind?" he bellowed, and ran over to her, pushing the machine out of her reach as her eyes filled with tears. "How could you do that? You almost caused a blast? What if something happened to you -"

She looked up at him with shock as he said that and he took a deep breath and got hold of himself again.

"I meant what if something happened to you, to me, to the building? I - I would get fired," he stammered, and for the first time in years, he had lost his cool.

"Sorry," she gulped, controlling the tears that were threatening to fall.

"What happened to you?" he asked her seriously. "How could you do something so obvious? You should know this wire doesn't go in here... in college, you got us in trouble so many times because of this same mistake."

Sanyukta couldn't control the warmth that filled her heart as he brought up college.

She looked back down again. He was right. This was a mistake she shouldn't have made.

Randhir took a deep breath again.

"Leave this machine here. You go and help Aryan," he finally told her, not liking that she was going to be with Aryan, but not trusting her to be near a machine right now.

"Y - yes," she told him and then smiled, feeling a bit relieved that she would be further away from him.

Aryan, who had been walking by unnoticed, hadn't failed to observe this exchange between Randhir and Sanyukta, causing his suspicions to arise. So Randhir knew her from college? No wonder she was acting so differently today. Something told him though, that there was more to Randhir and Sanyukta's relationship than met the eye and he was determined to find out.

Sanyukta joined him on the software side, while Randhir went back to the hardware, shaking his head, and focusing on his machine again.

The hours soon passed and Randhir and Sanyukta stayed far from each other. Soon, the staff started to go home one by one, but as usual Randhir was staying back.

"Ready to go?" Aryan asked Sanyukta. "I'll take you home."

"No!" she said immediately, glancing at Randhir. "I mean... I can go home myself. I just need to use the washroom that's all."

"That's okay," Aryan replied. "I'll wait for you."

"No please Aryan. I'll be fine," she told him seriously. "You go. Please."

Aryan nodded and sighed before leaving. She was never so formal about him dropping her home before. As he was leaving, he glanced at Randhir who was still there, focused on his machine.

Could it be, that the reason she wasn't leaving was because of this guy?

After Aryan left, Sanyukta hid in the software area, pretending to be hard at work on software until the rest of the office left and Randhir was the only one.

She observed him from afar. It was like he hadn't noticed anyone leave. He was so focused on his work, that he probably didn't even realize that he could go home.

She slowly made her way to him pulling her bag tightly against her shoulder nervously.

"R - Randhir," she said, "Hi."

Randhir looked up at her, startled to hear her voice.

"You haven't gone yet?" he asked her.

"No," she said, shaking her head.

"It's late. You should go. The work hours were over two hours ago," he said, checking his watch.

"That's why I came to check up on you," she told him softly.

Randhir sighed.

"Sanyukta I've been working here for almost two years," he told her matter-of-factly. "I know when work hours end and I know what I'm supposed to do. Now please, go home and let me do my work."

"Then I'll do work too," she told him defiantly, and he let his screwdriver fall on the table.

"What are you trying to do?" he asked her.

"N - nothing!" she answered. "I just... I wanted to tell you that Parth... Parth is alive. He's okay."

She saw a change of expression in Randhir's face... it was momentary surprise, perhaps even happiness.

"Really?" he asked, as if he was scared to believe her.

"Yes," she told him softly. "He's recovering in my house right now. He recently woke up from a coma. If you want, you can come and meet him."

Randhir pressed his hands against the table and thought about it for a moment. He didn't know whether it would be appropriate for him to go to Sanyukta's house like this... but his heart really ached to meet his best friend after so long.

To be truthful to himself, he wanted to cry with happiness. It was true that he had spent so much time trying to avoid Sanyukta's past memories, but a large amount was due to Parth's memories too. He couldn't stand the thought that his best friend had died.

"He's determined to find you," she told him. "He will be so happy..."

"Let's go," Randhir then said impulsively and took off his gloves and removed his lab coat. "Let's meet Parth."

Then he looked into Sanyukta's eyes and she looked back into his. A smile formed on her lips and he couldn't help but soften up too, although he didn't let it show on his face.

Warmth filled her entire body as she got onto Randhir's motorbike that evening after her first day of work. She held his shoulders nervously, but he seemed to be unaffected by this.

In the nervousness was a beautiful feeling though... a feeling she hadn't felt for two years, when she was with him last. This beautiful feeling gave her hope that maybe, everything could be alright after all.

This is so beautiful
SanDhir they had distanced themselves from the things they wanted most in life ... Sanyukta from machines n engineering and Randhir from love n affection ...

I've always loved Randhir more in your stories than in the show 😊 😊
And Parth is the only person who can bring them together again ... He means so much to SanDhir 😊 😳

It's beautiful their hidden feelings, them trying hard to avoid each other n failing ... And the care
