Yo friends of SKR forum !
I was wondering if you would like to read a fanfiction written from mytho-historical point of view. I am a serious history buff and love writing. I have always wanted to write about ramayana and mahabharata characters. Now I think is the time.
Now before I begin, I want to clarify something, The central characters of Ramayana, in this story would behave more like human beings than Divine avatars. Its my trust that before they were transcended into the status of Gods, they were human being with extraordinary credentials. and we Indians love to hero worship...so a mighty hero, a saviour, an ideal ruler becomes an avatar of Vishnu into the psyche of people.

With each passing generations, interpretations of ramayana got deviated more from the original story and became a mirror of society.

Tuldidas wrote is from a devotee's point of view, Krittivas had a picture how an ideal family should be with bhaiya-bhabi as a replica parent figure and inspirations to the younger siblings. It is said there are 3800 interpretations of Ramayana and each of them has it's writers own imagination added to the original plot line. Is also said that the main Valmiki ramayana ended with Rama's return to Ayodhya and his coronation. The uttar-Ramayana part was completely a later generations interpolation when the status of women had started degrading in society and all ill-practices ( agni-parkisha, wife-abandonment) had started taking place. With so many versions it is really difficult to fathom what happened really thousands of years back ( if we consider it to be a historical document, not a kavya).
So I took some creative liberties and wrote my interpretation of Seeta's journey from girlhood to marriage. [ I am a sucker for happy endings so i wont delve into the incidents that followed😳]
I hope you will like it too !

Chapter 1 : The two daughters of Janak

Treta Yuga(around 5000 BC), Mithila of Koshala Mahajanapada

"Do we really have to wake up this early and trek such towering height? Its not even dawn,Jyestha."

Kirti could not stop whinning at getting untimely roused from her sleep. The prahar sand clock indicated it was only 4. But Mandavi was insistent. Agraja Seeta had trusted her with this difficult duty and she was not going to fail her.

Now like every noble born lady, Shrutkirti loved gorgeous dresses, lovely ornaments, perfumes, her favourite pony, and yes her precious sleep. But looked like someone had made it her life's mission to disrupt her fairytale. Seeta Didi neither slept late or indulged in any luxury that their royal birth ensured them nor she let her other sisters stray from that self-imposed discipline. She had to see sunrise every day be it summer or winter from Nagakoot* hilltop and every now and then she would coax the sisters to accompany her. That damned hill must be the steepest rock to climb on their land.

"Kirti! Kusadwajh duhita Srutkirti!", Mandavi's voice rose another notch, "If you are not going to wake up, I shall have to complain to our parents that you are growing insolent day by day. Disobeying your elder sisters and disregarding their sentiments have become your..."

"Oh dear Mahadev! Do you have to overact all the time?", shrieked kirti shutting her eyes tight in clear exasperation.
"Don't really understand why you have to act like a faithful accomplice to Seeta Jyeyaa all the time . No matter how much you run around her like a faithful puppy, she would favor Urmila only. She does that all the time. She is her birth sister after all. I wish you do the same for me sometimes!"

Mandavi stopped dead in her track for a while, as if she couldnot believe her ears. Within a spilt second her fair face grew fiery red in anger. She jumped into Kirti's grand four poster bed and tore away the comforter that she huddled so long and threw it onto the cold ground. Catching kirti by her shoulders she shook her fiercely until she turned pale in shock and fear. She had definitely spoken something very very wrong...

"Never ever utter these words again Kirti. Not to me. Not to anybody." Mandavi hissed like an angry Naagmata, her eyes blazing. "Never again you shall slander Seeta jyeyaa. You know very well she never differentiates between sisters. If these are your sorry excuses to avoid waking up, so be it. Sleep and remain unblessed while we toil hard and climb mountain, and receive blessing of newly awakened Suryadev and golden hued Giriraj Himalay. Enjoy nature's serenity and behold the joy of watching every things turn alive at the advent of dawn. So go to sleep or rot in hell, I really dont care. And before you say I am parroting Seeta Jyeyaa*, I shall let you know I have learnt all these things from her.She is an inspiration, an ideal human being I hope to be one day following her footsteps."

Mandavi let go her shoulders and got down from bed with quiet dignity. Before she could reach the threshold, however she got a great tug at the end of her uttariya. Srutkirti was holding the end of it with such sincerity as if praying for her dear life. She would burst into tears any moment."I would never behave like this ever again, jyeyaa, I promise you. I would never say such things to agraja. Please dont leave me behind. I will be ready in 10 minutes."

Mandavi's eyes moistened too. Kirti was such an adorable little sister when she was not behaving like a spoilt princess."Make it 5."

Mandavi snapped her finger and pointed Srutkirti to the prahar lamp and rushed out of the chamber laughing.

A few more delayed minutes and then the morning star, still shining bright in the dark Western sky of early Phalguna saw the bevy of Maithili princesses emerging from the simple yet aristocratic wooden mansion that housed the royal family of Videha.

The reigning sovereign of Videha, maharajah Seeradhwajh Janak was a saint in royal garments. His country was ruled by Republican ideologies rather than strictly monarchical despotism. He never considered himself God send or any divine representative, the idea so prevalent in those day's kingdoms.

He called himself one among the sons of his land and was the first to lead them in any kind of physical, environmental or spiritual crisis. No wonder his country had become the safe haven of all free thinking learned men and women of the era, a centre for scholastic excellence and learning Vedas and Upanisadas.

Shiradhwajh and his brother ensured that their daughters too received the benefits of such a blessed ambience. All four princesses were trained with 64 skills( chatuhsasti kala)* what would make them an ideal woman, queen and mother when time would come. But then no training was necessary when it came to the senior most Videha princess Seeta, elder daughter of janak. All arts came naturally to her, she had natural logical aptitude that made philosophical debates with her Vedas gyani ather and teachers more enjoyable, her clear intellect made mathematics and astronomy easy subjects, razor sharp memory assured that all 4 vedas, upanishad, vedantas and ayurveda reigned at the tip of her tongue. Conscientious, beautiful and elegant, she was like a boon come true to Janak, an incarnation of Devi Laksmi to her subjects. Nobody minded her strange birth, nobody told her of her unknown origin.
**************

"Jyeyaa, I swear to Lord brahma, if I climb I more step, my legs will fall off." Mandavi and kirti complained in unison as they took another painstaking step towards the top of Nagakoot.

Mandavi nodded her head in agreement.they had hitched their skirts higher and tied their loose uttariya wounding it tightly round their waists so that clothes didnt interfere with their early morning adventure. But still they are few feet below the hilltop. sky was already showing signs of imminent sunrise and Seeta was trying her best to climb faster lest she missed the bhahmamuhurta (the exact moment of sunrise).she didn't want to waste her breath in talking useless so she simply gestured them to hurry up.

When she reached there it was exactly the moment. Without farther edo, she and her sisters took out the kalash of gangajal from the stash of their waists and started chanting Surya vandana.
Om
Japa Kusuma Sankasham
Kashyapeyam Mahadyuthim
Thamo Arim Sarvapapagnam
Pranathosmi Divakaram

As if to acknowledge them, the mighty sun god slowly emerged from the sea of mountains, scattering gold at each nook and corner of that great abode of snow. Giriraj Himalaya dazzled in that glorious royal attire. In the farthest east the peak of great Sagarmatha( sanskrit name of mt everest) shown in last crimson beacon. All was well in the world. The universe was at peace.

When they had finished chanting the concluding couplets, suryadev had already taken leave from his mountainous home on his chariot to explore further.

"Pheew. Everything went well Jyeyaa. We didn't fail you." Mandavi quipped. She was in the middle with hands around the shoulder of each cousin with most of her weight thrusting on them. Some of the benefits of being an elder sibling, she giggled in her mind. They were taking cautious steps down now. Unaware as ever,Seeta was few steps ahead gliding downhill like a butterfly on its course to lotus.

Suddenly she froze.

And turning back she strained her eyes at distant height.

"What happened Jyeyaa? All three sisters sensed her apprehension and stood alert.

Moments later a huge herd of wild deers was seen dashing downwards to them like raging floodwaters. Probably pursued by some carnivorous animal the herd in blind fear wasracing for a safe place. Anymoment they would be upon them and crush them under their mad hooves.

Mandavi looked around and started climbing the nearest tall tree urging others to follow her suit.

Urmila looked at Seeta. She looked as if made of stone. With furrowed brows and eyes set in deep concentration she seemed lost in some calculation. She ran to her and hugged her from behind with both hands hiding her face in her thick braid. Whatever Seeta Jyeyaa would do,she would follow. No questions asked. That was what she was taught and always maintained.

Kirti looked at them and then again at Mandavi. She was begging her to come to her noiselessly. They were taught not to make any sound in times of danger only use universal sign language. After a second's hesitation kirti dashed to an adjacent Deodar.

Urmila felt she was not breathing. Seeta felt stonecold too. With her palms joined together and eyes wide open she appeared to have slipped in a samadhi. She peered from behind to meet death face to face.

But then miracle happened.

At the zenith moment the leader of the herd, the one with enormous antler, shifted slightly right and the herd passed them from their right and vanished into the deep forest downhill. They were safe and unhurt.

Mandavi, Srutkirti quickly climbed down and charged Seeta.
'Jyeyaa ! Are you out of your mind? What were you thinking then you stood in the path of those wild animals like that ? And you urmila jyeyaa? Instead of pulling her to safety, u simply clung to her and stood ! This is simply outrageous...u behaved like a hare who closes its eyes in face of looming danger ! What was that stunt? I will tell everything to elders. You both need to be punished."

Mandavi was totally unconsolable. She couldn't imagine her Seeta Jyeyaa could act so irresponsible. And she had no repentance of that. Lo even now,she was still standing calm with folded palms watching the path of now disappeared herd. Her hysteric outburst however brought her back to present.

"Mandavi ! Mandavi! Calm down. Take a deep breath! Where is the desired effect of Surya pranam? It was supposed to calm your senses. Right?"Seeta patted the back of her head and smiled assuringly to them.

"I was not trying to show bravery or anything. I calculated that the herd would not pass this way if we dont attract their attention. It was not their natural course to take. So i stood still."
"what, again ?"

" But yes I could have told you that instant, sorry for making a scene. But you were too frightened to relent. And unnecessary altercation at that moment was extremely undesirable."

But how could she be so sure? Kirti couldn't believe what she was hearing. How can One can measure what course wild unpredictable beasts would take?

Seeta seemed to have read her inner thought. Turning to Kirti, she explained gently,"when someone feels threatened, he runs for a save haven,a known place that would make them feel safe. Those animals were heading towards the great grassland below where we had often see them grazing. Their animal instincts drove them to take the shortest route possible. And that would be the path to the right that goes straight down to that field. Thatz why I stood still and let them pass. They were harmless, they were frightened. May mother nature protect them! Seeta touch her forehead with the tip of her joined palms as she prayed for the safe passage of those creatures.

The sisters stood amazed.

Urmila beamed in pride, this was her blood sister, sahodara, the exceptional Seeta. She took her hand and proceeded to climb down.

A faint bleating sound from a nearby bush interrupted them again. A fawn had fallen in the thorn bush, only a week old, left behind when the herd passed in hurry. It was injured and was bleating grievously, blood oozing from itz bruises.

Seeta's heart melted. Without thinking anything she scooped it up in her laps.

Mandavi, urmila! We must take it to the Ayuralay. See it is bleeding profusely and its hind leg also seems dislocated. Let's hurry.

But jyeyaa ! Ayuralay is quite far from here, rishi Jagyabalka's ashram can be more convenient. He and his students can take care of it." Mandavi suggested.

"Very good idea, dear sister. Let's do it."

The sisters hurried down with seeta in front carrying the fawn upon her shoulder and kirti trailing behind. Sickness, animals, blood, medicines gave her nausea.
*********************

Hours later at maharshi Jagyabalka's ashram,as they broke fast and rested their sore limbs, they watched senior brahmachari students as they tended the wounds of the poor fawn, set its bones and fed milk with with great care. Seeta had to bath and change clothes and she was smeared in gore and feces all over. As usual she remained unperturbed. All her concerns circled around the fawn. Nothing ever swayed her, they mused.

"Why are we even surprised, " Mata katyayani chatted with her younger co-wife Maitrayi as they waited for Seeta to hand over fresh supply.
"She is a true Janak nandini, she inherited all his knowledge kindness and spiritual stoicism. So what she was not born of him ! I wonder till today,Jyeyaa, who had done such an inhuman thing ! to abandon a newly born baby in a barren field. To let her sever under the blades of plow. May that demon's head get smashed !!" Maithayi uttered in rigid anger.

"Her love for nature for all animate and inanimate proves she is a goddess incarnated. ... sakshat bhoomidevi kanya. How blessed we are to have her as our student." Maitrayi eyes grew dewy for her extraordinary student.

Katyayani nodded in agreement and added,

"She brought good luck to this land. After they found her and announced her their daughter, the country became rich in agriculture, rains became frequent, all barrenness vanished. Even the Queens conceived and produced children, trade improved and this land became home to all vedantic scholars. She is no orphan Maitrayi. She is mata laxmi."

They folded their hands in a namastey mudra and softly whispered," Glory to Maa Bhumidevi."

Seeta had already come out of the bathing pond and was drying her wet hairs when she overheard the last part of the conversation. She grew instantly alert. She never wanted any of her sisters to know her birthsecret. She didnot wanted to show anyone she knew.

Cautious as a baited deer she looked around. The gurumatas were still deep in their conversation.they didn't notice her coming towards them. They didn't notice either another form retreating. Seeta's eyes caught sight of a gradually disappearing yellow uttariya.

Urmila !

Seeta's heart stilled for a moment in fear. This waS the moment she feared all her life...

Urmila ! Wait. Urmila! Please stop!

Disregarding her wet clothes, she ran behind her, her loud apprehensive cry startled Maitrayi and Katyayani.

"Dear Lord Narayan! Did they hear us ?" Chill ran down their spine.

" I am sorry." Seeta blurted as soon as she caught hold of urmila.
"I am sorry. I am sorry. I am sorry. " She chanted feverishly. "I should have told you before. I am not your sister by birth, urmila. I am an imposter, sister. Forgive me." The last words were muffled with stifled sobs and hiccups that Seeta tried her best to stop.

" Shhh. Jyeyaa. Not a word more." For the 1st time her sister appeared vulnerable and shaken to urmila.

She knew all along. And hid it. And was always driven by the guilt of not really belonging. Now she realized why she all the time Seeta devoted her life to live upto their parents', their teachers', their country men's expectations, why she always tried to give without expectation of return, and why after everything she felt so embarrassed when someone noticed or praised her.
It was her way to convince herself she belonged. Nobody assured her that she deserved all the praises in the world and so much more.

And now the fear of losing her sister had unsettled her to the core, she was alone in this battle all her life and now she had lost her anchor.

Love and compassion filled her heart to brim for her almost divine elder sister.
Blood related or no, they were bonded eternally. She had to protect her now as the had done all the time.

"We shall never talk about this again.you are my jyestha. We are sisters. We are daughters of Janak. This will be the only truth."
"Always."
