It seemed that Parvati's declaration of love was the best medicine for Rudra. After that day, he had been recovering extremely well. The pain in his chest had substantially subsided and he was able to move his left arm without an electrical surge pain running through it. The artery that had been nicked due to the bullet did not reopen, and the wound itself had healed completely. All that was left were the stitches on his chest where they repaired his wound. The doctors were very impressed by the speed with which he recovered.
A week after the operation, Rudra was discharged from the BSD General Ward and allowed to go home. However, he was not allowed to return to duty, much to his dismay. The doctors had stated that they needed the gunshot wound to heal completely, even after the stitches were removed. He would have to wait at least a month after they had been removed before even considering going back to work. So, Rudra was forced to stay home under the care of Paro and Mala, while Dilsher went to work.
Being under the care of the two women was difficult. Since the day he had returned home, Mala had been cooking as though all of India was coming to their home. She was constantly feeding him. Sometimes it was fruits, sometimes it was sabzi, sometimes it was kheer. The list went on and on. Rudra felt himself getting fat, and knew that he was going to have to put in extra hours of training to work it all off. Not only that, but Mala would continuously ask him if he was okay and didn't want him to overexert himself. He was sure that if she could, she would carry him everywhere. One day, she practically had a heart attack when she saw him getting out of bed and walking around. Rudra almost yelled at her. Couldn't a man go to the bathroom without being questioned?!
While Mala's maternal instincts went into overdrive, Parvati's wifely instincts awakened. She was in charge of changing his bandages and making sure he had his medicines on time. Everything else seemed to have been taken over by Mala. She tried to explain to her maa-sa that she could manage, but she didn't listen. Rudra didn't mind as it gave him much more time to spend with Paro, who had seriously changed since that day she confessed her love to him. She was much more open and affectionate towards Rudra, which he did not mind at all. In fact, he relished in the fact and became much more shameless with her. There were times when she became completely flushed by his words or actions, turning beet red while he stared at her with a mischievous smirk. But Parvati was no less. It turned out that she was just as good at teasing him as he was at teasing her.
However, alone time with her was not something he was blessed with. Every attempt was foiled by his own mother, who always seemed to come and check on him at the wrong time. Rudra would always be irritated while Parvati couldn't help but giggle. He didn't think it was funny at all, especially when she would stand behind Mala, out of her line of view, and blow kisses at him and bite her lip as she tried to stifle her laughter. This woman was definitely a seductress, and it was pure torture that she was his and couldn't do anything about it. It wasn't long until Rudra had finally snapped and had a very long, private chat with his maa-sa. Let's just say she backed off quite a bit and was not able to look at her son and daughter-in-law for a whole week without turning red in embarrassment!
Despite their different tactics, Mala and Parvati were able to help Rudra down the right path towards a full and speedy recovery. Even Dilsher, who remained around but gave his son the space he needed, made sure that the women backed off and allowed Rudra to do some training and exercise instead of sitting in bed all day, much to his son's joy. After two whole months of physical therapy, medicines, and doctor's visits, Rudra was back to normal and was able to resume working at the BSD.
~
Parvati and Rudra were getting ready one morning. Rudra had just finished buttoning the last button on his BSD uniform shirt when he heard the bathroom door open. He peeked from the corner of his eye to see Parvati coming out dressed in a red sari and navy blue blouse. She raked her hands through her wet tresses before pulling her hair to one side of her face. She quietly hummed to herself as she made her way to the vanity, where her jewelry for the day was laid out. Rudra, who had sat down on the edge of the bed to put his shoes on, paused to watch his wife adorn herself as usual. Each step was careful and well-thought out. First the pinch of red sindoor, then her mangalsuthra. If she wore another necklace, she would put that on next. Then her earrings and finally her bangles. The methodic procedure was something Rudra memorized by heart. Today, he watched Paro do so again: red sindoor, mangalsuthra, no other necklace, gold earrings, and blue and gold bangles.
When she was done getting ready, Parvati turned to look at Rudra and found him staring at her as usual. A faint blush appeared on her cheeks as he finished putting on his shoes and strode over to her. She couldn't even walk back because she was already against the vanity. Her gaze lowered and only met Rudra's when he was directly in front of her. He continued to stare at her silently with a smile plastered on his face.
Parvati raised an eyebrow at him, "What?"
"What do you mean what'?" he countered.
"Why are you staring at me?"
"Am I not allowed to?"
"No, it's not that. It's just that you're staring at me like I'm a target."
Rudra blinked before he burst out laughing, "A target?! Really? That's what you come up with?"
"Well you've been staring at me for the passed ten minutes," she hit his arm. "What else am I suppose to think?"
"Wow. Here I am, admiring how beautiful my wife is and how lucky I am to have her, and she thinks I'm staring at her like a target I'm going to launch a missile on."
Parvati bit her lip. She didn't know what to say as she was completely embarrassed. She looked down at her feet and fiddled with her fingers, hoping the earth would just crack open and swallow her. She failed to notice, however, that the second she bit her lip, Rudra's laughter had died down. His gaze focused on her lower lip, which was turning a darker shade of pink as she bit it. She had done this so many times before, and every time he felt his primal instincts try to take over. He clenched his fists by his sides as he felt his mouth go dry. His eyes immediately darkened with desire.
"Stop biting your lip," he growled lowly.
Parvati snapped out of her reverie as her heard his voice but not what he said. She didn't let go of her lip, "Hmm?"
She let out a small gasp as she felt his thumb touch her lip, pulling the flesh softly away from her teeth. He traced her lower lip, which she had now stopped biting, before cupping her cheek. As his other hand trailed to her waist, Parvati moved her hands up to his chest, grabbing his collar. Her breathing accelerated, but her gaze never left Rudra's. They both inhaled sharply as his hand suddenly and unexpectedly came in contact with her bare skin. His grip tightened before he loosened it and began trailing his fingers against her waist. Her skin was so soft, like rose petals. No, it actually made flowers seem like thorns compared to her skin. This only increased his desires. However, what sent him overboard was the look in Parvati's eyes during his ministrations. Her gaze had softened as she stared at him, half-dazed. Her hazel orbs were glazed over, filled with an unspoken, burning passion that had the ability to scorch Rudra's soul. Not being able to take it anymore, Rudra leaned in and kissed Paro.
This kiss was different than the ones they had shared before. The other kisses were small, simple pecks filled with love and affection. But this kiss was something else. It had the ability to make their toes curl. It could burn them with the passionate flames it ignited. It felt so good to kiss the one they loved. Neither of them could believe that this was actually happening, and neither wanted it to stop. Rudra's hand left her face and slid to her back, stroking the bare skin that was revealed due to the low-cut back of the blouse. As she felt the heat from his hands against her back and waist, Parvati couldn't help but let out a soft moan before biting his lower lip. Provoked by her boldness, Rudra growled deeply in his throat before pulling her closer. She willingly went, carefully stepping on top of his feet so she could be as close to him as possible. He held her tightly to make sure she wouldn't fall and continued to kiss her passionately.
Parvati was the first to pull away due to lack of oxygen. Both their eyes remained closed as they tried to regulate their breathing. Rudra half-opened his eyes in a daze, and saw how his wife had looked thoroughly kissed. Her swollen pink lips beckoned him once more and just when he was about to swoop in for another kiss, there was a knock on their bedroom door.
It was Mala, "Parvati! Are you ready? We were suppose to go shopping today."
Parvati's eyes snapped open. She stepped off of Rudra's feet and was about to move away when he pulled her back, sending her crashing into his chest. While he kept a penetrating gaze on her, he shook his head, signaling her not to go. As much as she didn't want to go, she knew she couldn't leave her maa-sa waiting at the door. Parvati shook her head in denial and was about to push him when he securely grabbed her by her waist and pulled her back.
She looked back and forth between the door and Rudra before yelling, "I-I'll be out in a few minutes, maa-sa! I'm almost done getting ready!"
From the other side of the door, Mala responded, "Okay! I'll be in the living room, waiting. Don't take too long!"
"I won't!"
Rudra and Parvati remained silent as they listened for Mala's retreating
footsteps. Once she was gone for sure, the two of them looked at each other. Parvati placed her hands on his chest and gave him a gentle push.
"Rudra, I have to go," she said half-heartedly.
Rudra leaned his head back and groaned, "I swear, maa-sa has the worst timing."
"It's not her fault."
"Excuse me if I find her at fault for interrupting me kissing you!"
Paro blushed and pushed him away, "Besharam!"
"Only with you," Rudra chuckled before focusing on her more seriously. "Are you okay?"
Parvati looked at Rudra and saw the concern in his eyes. She knew why he was asking that. In the last two months the two of them had become very close, sharing kisses and so on, but they hadn't consummated their marriage. They had never been so passionate with their kisses as they had been just now. This was the first time they had witnessed the passion that unfolded when they let go for a moment. However, he needed to know whether or not she was okay with what had just happened between them. Truth be told, Rudra loved it. He relished the idea of being so close to Paro, but was worried about how she felt. Her actions during their kiss told him that she wanted it was much as he did, but he wondered if maybe she got caught up in the moment. He didn't want her to regret it later. Parvati smiled as she understood her husband's perspective. Even after everything, he still thought about her. He didn't want her to fear him or his touches like she did with Varun. She would have to assure him that her past was 100 percent behind her.
She stepped forward and rested her hands on his chest, "I am okay."
"Are you sure?" he asked as his hands went up to his chest to cover her hands.
"Rudra, I love you. I trust you."
"But what about-."
"My past is behind me," she let out a small laugh. "That's the first time I've actually said that, isn't it?"
Rudra smiled as she finally admitted what he had realized in the last two months. He continued to listen intently as she spoke.
"My past is truly behind me, and it is all thanks to you...your love...and your support. You are not...him. You never were and you never will be. I realize that now. And you know what else I realized...that I love you and I want to live the rest of my life with you and only you."
"Paro, I understand that, and I'm glad you told me this. Really, I am. But I have to know, are you sure?"
"Rudra Pratap Ranawat," he grinned as he heard her say his name authoratively. "You get this in your head. I am okay. I am not afraid of you...of us... or of what's between us...not anymore. Am I clear? And another thing-."
Parvati was silenced as Rudra placed his lips on hers. She gasped and her eyes widened in shock. When he released her, he chuckled seeing her surprised expression.
"Sometimes you talk too much," he laughed.
She smacked his chest playfully and giggled, "Don't you have to go to work?"
"First maa-sa and now work," he grumbled as he moved away from Paro. "I swear, at this rate, I will never get alone time with you."
"Such a jallad."
"Oh great! And now my own wife is calling me a jallad!"
Parvati laughed as she moved behind him and began pushing him out of the bedroom. Rudra continued to grumbled and whine, even as he made his way out of the house and to work.
Parvati waved goodbye from the doorway with a wide grin across her face. The sight was enough to melt Rudra's irritation.
As Rudra went to work and Parvati went shopping with Mala, both of them remained distracted by the kiss they had shared that morning. It was just too exceptional to forget. Parvati's words had made Rudra realize that she wasn't afraid of accepting their relationship like she was initially. Even though he understood that since the day she told him she loved him, it put his mind at ease now that he heard it from her mouth that was had put the past behind her. Parvati, too, felt the final burden lift from her shoulders as she finally told Rudra how she was ready to spend the rest of her life with him. They were ready for the next step in their future, every part of it. Both of them knew that nothing was holding them back, but were not sure when the right time was to move forward. And if the time was right, who would take the first step?
