It was Sooraj Barjatya who noticed the then budding actor, who could play a sanskari beta and as well as the perfect Bollywood lover boy and found the most apt name for this combo - Prem. After almost two decades, Sooraj and Prem are back, the only difference being that Prem aka Salman Khan is now a phenomenon. And matching up to his stardom is not easy. As Prem Ratan Dhan Payo gears up for its big fat release next week, where we'll see him romancing fashionista Sonam Kapoor after her debut in Saawariya, we rate all his pairings with actresses down the years on our chemistry meter. Take a look...
Bhagayshree and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 8/10
If you think Salman can only fight goons, watch Maine Pyaar Kiya. It's a testimony to his lover boy image. Sooraj Barjatya gives Salman Khan his iconic screen name, Prem and we'll always be thankful to him for that. He romanced Bhagayshree in their joint debut and their chemistry could put veterans to shame. Sadly, Bhagayshree drifted away from the movies after that, but this one still remains everyone's favourite.
Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 10/10
They're like sugar and spice. When two of the Hindi cinema's biggest superstars come together, their chemistry isn't anything less than a firecracker. When they were paired for the first time in Saajan (1991), it was just a glimpse of the magic they could create. And when they came back in 1994 for Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! they rocked the box-office, worldwide. It was Madhuri and Salman who made big fat Indian weddings the perfect playground for courtship and romance!
Karisma Kapoor and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 9/10
A masala film was incomplete without Karisma Kapoor and Salman Khan's hit jodi in the 90s. Watch them in films like Judwaa, Chal Mere Bhai and Biwi No 1. and you'll know that bringing romance in a comedy is not everyone's cup of tea.
Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 8/10
Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan made dancing amidst snow-capped mountains, singing in the rain and finding the perfect ending for their love story at the airport look possible in real life. Watching them in popcorn entertainers was a delight to audiences.
Preity Zinta and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 9/10
If Rani and Salman made for a perfect Betty and Archie story, Preity was the Veronica in this equation. Preity Zinta-Salman Khan-Rani Mukerji's trio was so much fun to watch that they did two back to back films, Har Dil Joh Pyaar Karega and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. Almost always a part of love triangles, the magic somewhat worked in films like Jaan-E-Mann and Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha. Salman and Preity still remain good friends and have often done special numbers for each other's films. Remember Happenin' from Main Aur Mrs Khanna, anyone?
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter: 10/10
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the only lucky one to direct the duo on screen. Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan scorched the screen and how! Watch Aankhon ki gustakhiyaan to know what this Jodi was all abou. It could put Mills & Boons to shame.
Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 10/10
Whether his off screen romances translated well on screen or he looks good with everyone, is anyone's guess. But where Katrina Kaif is concerned, she and Salman made even a vanilla romance look saucy. We loved them in rom-coms and action-packed dramas but how we wish they'd do a hardcore romantic flick someday.
Priyanka Chopra and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 7/10
In a film with six on-screen couples, if there was only one pair that became the talk of the town, it was Salman and Priyanka. Nikhil Advani's Salaam-e-Ishq showed us a side of their chemistry that cannot be forgotten. Even in David Dhawan's comedy, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, the two brought out a fine balance between comedy and romance.
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter - 8/10
It was a while before the audiences took to their pairing, as their first two films together - Kyon Ki and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna were box-office duds. But the box-office numbers of their next two outings, Bodyguard and Bajrangi Bhaijaan speak for themselves and have gone down in history. Bodyguard and Bajrangi Bhaijaan broke several records. Whether it's a soothing number like Teri meri from Bodyguard or a zany item number like Fevicol se from Dabangg 2, they know just how set the screen on fire.
Sonakshi Sinha and Salman Khan
Chemistry meter: 8/10
Bhai's fans are very particular about who he's romancing on celluloid. So when he teamed up with the 20-something Sonakshi Sinha in 2011, people were not so sure about this pairing. But once the film hit the screens, people knew they are tailor-made for the Bollywood masala genre. The then newbie, Sonakshi matched up to the superstar's standard and their pairing got a stamp of approval for good.
