Adding to the controversy, the legal ramifications stemming from CarryMinati's video have brought a new dimension to the ongoing discussion about nepotism. This has further intensified scrutiny of Johar's influence within the industry and sparked renewed debates about fairness and opportunity in Bollywood. The situation underscores the complex intersection of online criticism, legal action, and the broader conversation surrounding the film industry's practices.
Karan Johar initiates a defamation case
A Mumbai court on Monday issued an order preventing YouTuber Ajey Nagar, also known as Carryminati, along with Meta Platforms and others, from distributing any "objectionable or defamatory" content against the filmmaker.
Karan Johar initiated a defamation suit against CarryMinati and his team following the YouTuber's roast video, "Coffee with Jalan." Johar claimed the video, which parodied his show "Koffee With Karan," employed abusive language targeting Bollywood, nepotism, and him personally.
Carry Minati ordered not to make videos against Karan Johar
On Monday, February 9, Judge Pandurang Bhosale issued an ad-interim order against CarryMinati, asserting: Prima facie, it appears that Ajey Nagar and Deepak Char (manager of the CarryMinati channel) have made defamatory statements and used vulgar language against the plaintiff. These videos need to be taken down immediately. There should be an injunction against all those who circulate and re-circulate these videos on social media platforms. This is a fit case to pass ad-interim injunction orders against the defendants.
Karan’s alleged case on Carry Minati
In his legal filing, Karan alleged that CarryMinati, along with his manager Deepak Char, had made defamatory statements about him. He also contended that the video's language was highly offensive, necessitating its immediate removal from public platforms.
Despite Ajey's claim that the video had been removed, Karan argued that the harm was already done. He highlighted that the video had millions of views before its removal and continues to circulate as reels and short videos across social media.
Judge Bhosale further added in the ad-interim order: All the defendants No. 1 to 5, Defendant No. 8/John Doe, and their agents, servants or any persons claiming through or under them are hereby temporarily restrained from making and uploading videos, posting, re-posting, giving interviews, corresponding, communicating, uploading, printing, publishing, re-publishing, hosting, circulating or re-circulating any other defamatory/slanderous content or making any further defamatory content, derogatory remarks, posts, messages, tweets, videos, interviews, communications or correspondence, whether similar to the impugned content or otherwise, in any manner whatsoever in relation to the plaintiff on any social media platforms until the decision of the notice of motion. Defendant No. 6 is directed to take down the videos and URLs.
