CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

He wrote a note for Ishita at the breakfast table telling her that he will meet her when he got back home and he just needed to go see a few people. And like always his driver got him to town and he got out, grabbed a cab and went Dr. Vandu's office for an appointment that was long overdue and one he needed very badly.

'Okay Raman... Mind telling me why you called me here on a weekend and also booked the entire day...''Vandu said

'I have a lot of things going on in my head and I feel like if I don't tell someone I might break inside'' He said

'What happened... ' Asked Vandu

'Where do I begin? I have a wife who I would do anything to bring back to my lif but I can't because I am engaged to another. My father hates my wife my mother hates my fianc or doesn't just trust her, that part I am yet to determine further. I thought she was with Shlok turns out she isn't which means she stayed true to her promise but I didn't in a way and now...'' He said in one breath

'Are you having flashes again'' She asked

'No... I am not having any flashed because I...'' He said letting out a heavy breath

'I REMEMBER IT ALL... ALL THESE MEMORIES HAVE BEEN COMING BACK AND I REMEMBER IT ALL.'' He added looking at a very surprised Vandu

Meanwhile back at Ishita's, she got up and went down stairs to check on him but he wasn't there. When she finally made it to the kitchen she found Romi standing at the dining table with the note in his hand

'Hey... What are you doing here this early'' She asked as she made her way to where he was but Romi turned and looked at her saying

'I was coming here to check on you and then I saw this...'' he opened the note again and he began reading

'Good morning... I am sorry I had to get out early because I had some people I wanted to see. I will see you back at home... Love Raman'' He said lifting a finger as if he wanted to stress a point

'This is my favorite, Ps I had an amazing time last night. I haven't felt so alive in such a long time and for that I say thank you...'' He said looking at her

'What...'' She asked surprised that he was surprised

'What... You are asking me what? What the hell Ishu he is now spending the night?'' Said Romi

'Okay I am sensing a very disgusting accusation coming on so if I were you I would think twice before answering this question. What do you mean by that'' She asked looking straight at him

'Look all I am saying you're doing such things is the reason we all had our lives uprooted and I am not in for anymore'' He said completely disregarding what she had just said

She looked at him with shock and she wanted to curse him out but she was also too shocked for that. Romi looked at her and realized what he had just said and tried to back track

'Ishu...'' he said but she was too pissed and he could see it

'Okay first of all I didn't sleep with Raman last night and contrary to what you and your sister believe I am not in the business of sleeping around. Secondly even if I did sleep with him, what business is it of yours anyway and I will not tolerate anyone talking to me in that manner not even you. And up rooted your lives really... Romi... Really ... You... You are telling me this...'' She said looking at him and shaking her head before she walked away

'Ishita wait... Ishu come on...'' He called her but she wasn't having any of it and that is when Shlok came barging in

'Will you slow down, what is it now'' She asked as she looked at Shlok who was panting

'It is Mr. Bhalla... He called for a meeting at Bhalla Offices. I think he is going to present that proposal to the shareholders today.'' Said Shlok

'He can't do that... How the hell does he think this is going to help or even legal... How can't he see he is being duped'' Romi said

'He is desperate that is why'' Said Ishita

'Look Bhalla companies haven't been doing well and as we all know, RKB is the only viable side of the business that has been doing well but that also faded 3 years. Now they are going down under and they need to start making profits...'' Said Shlok

'No... He can't sell... He loves control so he can't sell... Merge... I think he is merging with someone and he thinks he will still have control. I think... Oh wow... Wow Abhya you have outdone yourself...'' Said Ishita as she walked and grabbed her bag

'Wait you really think Abhya is already making his move'' Said Shlok

'Yeah I think so too... I guess today we find out who his inside man is...'' Said Ishita as they all walked out

Back at Vandu's offices, Raman was visibly agitated and whatever the hell he had been keeping inside had begun slowly swallowing in.

'I remember... Everything came back and I was angry at first especially when I gave that speech but then the accident and now, I know exactly what is going on... Or at least I think I do'' He said

'What do you mean you remember'' Said Vandu

'It all came back. After the accident when I woke up, it was like I had been dreaming and everything in front of me wasn't too unfamiliar anymore'' He said

'Hold on... You were in another accident'' Said Vandu

'Yeah I went to this gala thing with Shagun, I mean now that I think about it, I don't understand why I even went in the first place. I began having what I think were panic attacks and the seizures began again and before I knew it I was getting into a car and then the accident'' Said Raman as he grabbed a bottle of water and sat down

'What caused the flashed in the first place...'' Said Vandu

'I think I saw Abhimanyu... Abhimanyu Raghav... That son of a ...'' Said Raman holding back

'So... You are telling me that you remember virtually everything...'' Said Vandu

'Yes... ' He said

'Did you tell them...'' Said Vandu

'Tell who what?'' Said Raman

'Your family... Did you tell them'' She asked

'No...'' He said

'Why not...'' She asked

'Because I have this sneaky feeling that if I tell them that I am okay, Ishita will walk out of that house and she will not come back...'' He said

'Why will she leave'' Asked Vandu

'A lot happened between us and it has to take more than me having amnesia for her to stay. Does she love me, I think so... Is it enough, I am not so sure...'' He said as he began fidgeting with his hands and Vandu could see it

'Raman...'' She called him but it was like he was in his own world

'I don't know how I could be so stupid... I should have fought for her more. I mean she never made it easy but so the hell what... She was my wife... I shouldn't have... And that son of a bitch, Abhimanyu, why the hell did she have to bring that son of a bitch into our lives'' He said and Vandu couldn't make sense of any it and she could see he had begun breathing heavily almost as if he was too angry but she also knew they may have been panic attacks

'And that Shagun, she never helped matters either... Ishita warned me but I was so damn stubborn to listen. I should have known how manipulative she could be to get what she wanted...'' He said as he began twitching

'Isn't Shagun Ishita's sister...'' Vandu asked knowing what the answer was but she wanted to know what he thought and maybe this might help him get a lot of things that he was holding inside

'No... Well not in the literal sense... They were good family friends and after everything with Shagun's family, the Iyers took them in. That is how they know each other...'' He said

'So what happened...'' Vandu asked

'Jai told me that Iyers got back from abroad and things for the Aroras weren't doing so good but since these children were like family they asked them to join them in their home...'' Said Raman as he scoffed a little and added

'Mihir said and I quote...Now like in our family, how you are the golden boy for mom and dad... So was Ishita to the Iyers...'' Shaking his head

'Why are you a bit irritated with that statement'' Said Vandu

'No I am not...'' Said Raman

'Come on... It is quite evident'' Said Vandu

'Because I think when it comes to that, he may have been right and I think it affected all of us, me and my siblings...'' He said getting even more irritated before he said

'Can I just get back to the story now...'' He said

'Yeah... Sure why not'' Said Vandu as she sat back

'Regardless of everything, the Iyers never made their kids feel less loved or less appreciated but of course Ishita was the brilliant one. Everyone knew that, everyone accepted it but not Shagun. She wanted more... She wanted what Ishita and Mihika had but there was just one problem, she hated working for it. Ishita had a job when she got back and so did Mihika. Romi was still juggling law school and trying to get his life together. They all know what they wanted but for Shagun education was not really her thing although she was an amazing stylist and fashionista. But the Bhalla never thought this was a career path at all. They thought it was great for a hobby but not a career...'' Said Raman

'And she didn't like that...'' Said Vandu

'Ohh not at all... Eventually Shagun began hating Ishita. You can cut it down as jealousy but she really detested her. Ishu on the other hand given everything she cared about Shagun. But all that changed when Shagun stole from her parents. She somehow conned them and stole her father's savings and ran...'' Said Raman

'Oh wow...'' Said Vandu

'Yeah a few years later she showed up at my door step I should have said no...'' Said Raman feeling bad

'So I don't get it... Why is Ishita here now?'' She asked

'To be honest, I am not so sure. But if I am to guess, my father has something to do with it and he had promised her something in return.'' he said

'What do you think it is then?'' Vandu asked

'I don't know, money maybe... or maybe he is blackmailing her or something like that I don't know. All I am sure of is I cannot let her leave me again and even if she does, this time, it is going to be on our terms'' He said

'Do you trust Ishita'' Asked Vandu a question that seems so easy ad yet he couldn't bring himself to answer it

'How are you going to fight for someone you don't trust?'' Vandu asked

'I don't all... All I know is if I let her leave me for another 7 years it will kill me. I love her, everything else will make its way back too...'' He said with conviction causing Vandu to smile a bit because subconsciously he did trust his wife; he was just too scared to admit it yet

'Tell me how it all began...'' Said Vandu

'How what began...'' He asked

'I mean the whole story, tell me how it began...'' Said Vandu

'Well Ishita and I got engaged and were ready to get married something my father wasn't willing to accept but I always thought that maybe his opinion would change when he got to spend time with her.'' He said

'But it didn't...'' Said Vandu

'No... Actually it was my mother who stood up for me and convinced him to let me marry the girl I wanted.'' He said

'There are so many other girls you could have chosen to marry why her'' Said Mr. Bhalla

'Why not her? What is so bad about her? I don't get it'' Said Raman

'I mean she will never fit into our family... We are from different worlds'' Said Mr. Bhalla

'Vishu come on... Really'' Said Santosh

'I don't know what that means. In fact I don't understand it...'' Said Raman

'Come on Raman stop trying to act smart...'' Said Mr. Bhalla

'Papa look... She may not be from the same social class as us but she is also not some middle class girl who wants my money. She is very independent and her family does pretty well for themselves...'' Said Raman

'It is not about the money...'' Said Mr. Bhalla

'Isn't it...'' Said Santosh

'Okay can I talk to my son in private please...'' Said Mr. Bhalla causing Santosh to sit back with a smile on her mouth knowing her husband was being unreasonable

'Oh really... Then if not money, then what please educate me because I am not understanding you'' Said Raman

'Look I need a certain kind of woman in order to succeed, one who will be able to give up most things for you. This girl is independent which is good but to for a wife... You need someone who will take care of you and make sure you have everything you need in order to succeed. Will she give up her life to live for you...? Because it is the only way I am allowing this...'' He said

'First of all this is stupid. I think it is really selfish to want her to give up everything for me and not do the same for her. I don't understand why I can't take care of her or make sure she has everything she needs as she does for me. But given this is the ultimatum you gave, this is what she will do. She is going to be a stay at home wife like you wanted... Now what else do you need...'' Said Raman who found this whole thing bizarre

'Wait a minute... Ishita had a well-paying job that she gave up just to be your wife...'' Vandu asked

'Yes...'' He answered

'So she had no source of income when she married you...'' Vandu asked

'NO...'' He answered

'Hold on... So whatever she needed, she had to ask for it from you.'' Vandu said

'Yeah... I hated that believe me...'' He said

'So what happened next...'' Vandu asked

'So your mind is made up...'' Mr. Bhalla asked

'Yes she is the girl I want to marry and if you ever want to see me get married then she is the one no one else...'' Said Raman with a smile on his face

'Fine... Not that I can even do anything about it anyway since you already announced behind my back...'' He said causing Raman to smile and Santosh too who was listening to their conversation

'Don't be quick to smile... You need to get her to sign this first...'' He added handing Raman papers

Raman took then and perused through only to realize what they were

'Yeah this is never going to happen...'' Said Raman giving them back to his father

'What is that?'' Asked Santosh she took the papers form Mr. Bhalla

'Raman stop being childish and think about this logically'' He said

'Papa... There is no way in hell I am giving my soon to be wife a prenuptial agreement to sign. This discussion is done...'' Said Raman as he walked away

'Vishu... Seriously...'' Said Santosh

'Raman... Wait... If things go south I am not allowing her take even a penny of my money...'' He said

'That is fine, since my company and yours are merging now, I will stay within what is mine and you will still have what is yours. God forbid if anything happens between me and her, she won't touch your money, she will be taking mine and I will willingly give it to her...'' He said

'I should have known... In fact I don't know why I was surprised when he told me that.'' Said Raman

'Ishu where are you taking me...'' Raman asked as Ishita held his hand and dragged him

'Just come on... This will not even take long...'' Said Ishita

'Okay but where are you going...'' He asked

'There... We are going there...'' She said pointing at the temple

'Oh God you snuck into my house to get me here... Why...'' He said a bit amused

'To take our vows...'' She said and she dragged him inside

'What...'' He said as he followed her

'Come on... Stop being such a baby'' She said as she smiled and removed her shoes moving ahead of him

'Ishu this is silly...'' He said

'No it is not... ' She said but he just laughed

'Come on don't laugh I am serious... I really want to do this...'' He said as she pouted looking so adorable

He smiled and leaned him surprising her as he placed a soft wet kiss on her cheek

'Raman... We you can't do that here...'' She said as she blushed and slightly pushed him back

'What... I am sure even God can appreciate it when he sees two people in love...'' he said winking and she chuckled

'Raman... I am serious... Come on. I want to hear yours. Besides your parents are way too traditional and would never allow us to say these vows during the pheras...So I brought you here such that I get to hear those vows you wrote for me'' Said Ishita.

Raman looked at her and smiled realizing that this was important to her and he ended up agreeing

'Okay... We shall say them together...'' He said as he took her hand in hers and began

'Peace, that is a word that comes to mind every morning when you're in my arms, precious, that is the word that comes to mind when you stay holding my hand even after a massive fight, selfless, it is the word that comes to mind when you chose to give up your career just so you could get to be called my wife. Loyalty that is the definition of you, love... That is what you represent to me. I am putting it all in because I know, what we are, what we have, this journey we are about to begin is real and it is ours...'' Said Raman his voice almost breaking

'I never knew what love even meant until I met you, I never knew what soul mate meant until you looked into my eyes, I never knew that my heart could love this much until you somehow stole your way into it. I do not guarantee that I will be perfect but I will do the best I can and give it my all because you are worth it. You're my laughter, you're my joy, you're my pain, you're my sorrow and you're that gorgeous beauty on my pillow that I will treasure because you are all for me...'' Said Ishita tears streaming down her face

Raman took a step forward as he wiped the tears that were streaming down her face as he said

'I promise to love you and stay this in love with you even when things get tough. I promise to be your light when all that you seem to see is darkness. I promise to fight for you even when you think no one in the world is. I promise to fight for us when it get tough. When you barely have the strength to live, I promise to live for you and be your guide. I am going to love you for the rest of my life, this is my vow in front of God with the stars as witness to this promises I make...'' Said Raman tears in his eyes and Ishita's feeling and falling more in love than she had ever been

She looked into his eyes with all the love she had and took his hand and place it on her heart as she said

'I promise to keep you here and never to shut you out because every happiness, joy, sorrow and pain is that is yours is mine. I promise to love you unconditionally, truthfully and faithfully for the rest of my days and lifetimes. I promise to love you even when it is not easy. May God and you, my angel, my heart, my soul bear witness to this promise...'' She said smiling as she looked at him

He smiled before he placed his hand on the nape of her neck and kissed her and they in that moment, promised to live for each other.

'That has to be one of the single most amazing moment in my life. I don't even think I understood how much she loved me until that moment. She was very open and she had laid it all out... It had to take a lot for her to break that promise... 'He said disheartened and Vandu who was listening to this story was all the more impressed

Either these two were the most in love couple in the world or they were really good at lying to each other or they were living in a bubble so big that when it burst, none of them knew how to get back to each other or they were just two romantic idiots who took marriage lightly.

'So when you finally got married did anything change? With your dad I mean?'' Vandu asked

'No... Not really... I mean they had an okay relationship. She was his daughter in law and he was her father in law but that was pretty much it. Nothing more nothing less ...'' Said Raman

'How did that make you feel...'' She asked

'Does every therapist have to ask that question? Like is it in the first thing they teach you when you get to school...'' He said

'Well in a nut shell maybe but they also teach us how to analyses when someone is defecting, kind of like you're doing now...'' Said Vandu

'Am I... Oh wow...'' He said

'You still haven't answered my question. How did that make you feel...'' She asked again

'Of course I hated it. She was the love of my life and he was my father. They were among the most important people in my life and yet they didn't get along. Didn't even make an effort to try so I sort of had to settle for what they had although I hated it'' He said

'So their relationship never improved over time...'' Said Vandu

'No... and they never tried to improve it over time...'' Said Raman

'I don't know but if you ask me it was because she was not the ideal daughter in law he saw for me. And she stopped trying to be what he wanted her to be...'' Said Raman

'The ideal bahu...'' Said Vandu

'Exactly... I mean Ishita is not wild in anyway but she is also not quiet and the type to sit back and take orders. In facts she hates it... They all had a big personality and Ishita finally smeared down because well, she loved me and knew if she didn't dad would probably stop the wedding'' Said Raman as he let out a soft laugh

'What kind of daughter in law did you dad want'' Asked Vandu

'The Shagun type I may say...'' He answered

'Meaning what...'' Vandu asked

'The daughter in law who is willing to just sit back just be that. You know, take the Bhalla's family name and uphold it sort of by just being a quiet abiding housewife... Whatever my dad says has to stand or all hell breaks loose plus there was that little matter of the Rift which had put them at loggerheads and pretty much they failed to ever find a way back...'' Said Raman as he took a sip of water

'What happened'' Vandu asked

'She orchestrated the buying of that place with her friends right under my father's nose and he hated that.'' Said Raman as he chuckled a bit

'How...'' Vandu asked

'Ishita is... If you ask me a computer genius, most of her coding skills most people would die to have. Now she loved it so much and she helped most of her friends when she was needed. See most of her friends were not what you would call socially welcomed. It was a really tight neat group at that rift and they were always loyal to each other to the fault. I mean now that I even think about it, I totally understand her relationship with Shlok now than I did then.'' Said Raman as he chuckled a bit

'Anyway my father wanted to buy the land and redevelop the place which was code for stop Mihir from going there because he thought Mihir was wasting his life away. I agreed too for the most part mainly because it was a good deal but I didn't agree with the way he did it. My brother had to want to change otherwise he was going to have to buy a lot of building if that was the case...'' Said Raman

'So I am guessing Mihir didn't want to follow into the family business...'' Said Vandu

'Oh he hated it... Actually his words were, he didn't want to be under my father's noose all the time and he needed his freedom. He loved art, still does and he is good at it but my father... Well... That is not a viable career choice...'' Said Raman

'I bet...'' Said Vandu

'Anyway when Ishu found out what he was doing, she sort of went behind his back and bought the rift... for herself...well technically for her friends. Ruben the old man who owned the place was more than willing to see it to them because that place helped him a lot with his children plus he loved all the kids who grew up there so he was more than willing to sell to them. Dad found out and he was livid

'Who the hell gave you the right to do that? What do you take yourself for...'' Mr. Bhalla barked catching the attention of everyone at the table

'I don't know what you're talking about'' Ishita lied

'Don't... I am way too grown for your games. Why did you buy the rift?'' He screamed again

'Because Uncle Ruben was selling it and I figured why not buy. My friends and I needed a place to go hang out and also work so...'' She said casually

'Those people are not your friends and you are now married to a Bhalla, you are not allowed to hang around those people.'' He said

'With all due respect, those people are my friends and are my family. Mihika and I practically grew up there. I did my first coding in that place and it is like a second home to me.'' She said

'Grow up because you are not a child anymore. Now you will hand over those papers of that land to me and this is the last I want to hear about it again...'' He said

'NO...'' She said

'Ishita I am not repeating myself'' He said

'Raman talk to your wife...'' Said Mr. Bhalla

'May I remind you that the money you are so sweetly enjoying is not yours...'' Said Mr. Bhalla

'Wow...'' Said Vandu

'Yeah ... I knew all hell was about to break loose. She hated it when my father did that and he did it a lot. Most of the time she kept her calm and held back but for some reason that day even she was out for blood'' Said Raman

'Does your father equate a lot of things to money...'' Said Vandu

'Well yeah... Sort of ... He watched his parents suffer in abject poverty and vowed never to be that way again. The problem was he may have lost himself along the way...'' Said Raman

'Oh Sussar let me remind you, you son didn't find me in a gutter either. I, contrary to what you may believe, worked and made enough of my own to handle that payment. In case you don't believe you can ask you son. I haven't made any payments from his accounts since we met. I will not take lightly to you thinking it is okay for you to disrespect me like this'' Said Ishita and began walking away

'Was that true?'' Asked Vandu and Raman disappointedly answered

'Yes...''

''She never spent even a penny on your money till now...'' Said Vandu

''Nothing... It had to take a lot of convincing and maybe guilt tripping. Telling her she needed to trust me and allow me take care of her''Said Raman

''I am sensing Ishita is a proud person...'' Said Vandu

''Yeah very... Sometime she even comes off as arrogant'' Said Raman

'Ishita come on... You can be a little more respectful...'' Said an irritated Raman

'Raman I am sorry but this... I am tired of hearing him talk to me like you found me homeless under a bridge'' Said Ishita

'I know just... Will you stop moving away...'' Screamed Raman

'Oh Raman, trust me... My moving away is me being very respectful'' She said and she walked out

'This... This disrespectful thing is your daughter in law'' Said Mr. Bhalla before he turned to Raman and said

'Of all the girls in the world you had to get her as my daughter in law...'' and he walked out angry as well

'I don't think he ever forgave her for it. For him it was her way of showing she was never going to be loyal to the Bhallas if it ever came to the nitty gritty. He saw it as a sign she was being unfaithful and disrespectful. Every time Mihir left the house and went there was more distance created and each time that happened, he blamed Ishita for it.'' Said Raman

'I don't understand that... Why wouldn't he just talk to Mihir'' Said Vandu

'My father doesn't talk... That is not the kind of person he is. In fact we Bhallas, we don't talk. Most children will go talk to their fathers when they see a girl they liked or had a bad day or had their heart broken. Well my dad, not so much and my mom, well, she is the true Bhalla Bahu... All he says goes... She never questioned him, at least never in front of us ' Said Raman irritated

'Why does that make you so angry'' Asked Vandu

'Because... It is just... I don't know'' He lied and Vandu knew it

'Okay so... how did this fight change your relationship with Ishita...'' Vandu said

'It didn't... I mean it did but we worked it out'' He said

'We never really talked. I went and apologized to dad and he was supposed to go back to the board and apologize to them because he was humiliated since he had to go back and tell the shareholders that the land had been sold and the deal had been blown much less by his daughter in law'' Said an irritated Raman

'I don't... Why would you ask me that?'' Said Raman getting angry

'You are not answering the question Raman...'' Said Vandu but he just kept quiet making a realization that he didn't know till now

Vandu watched him as he become teary and knew she was hitting a spot which meant now, they were getting somewhere. In this journey to find out what had happened to him, maybe he would find out too, why his marriage broke in the first place and maybe his healing would begin
