@Amri: It's interesting how the balance works and how it caters to different tastes. To be completely honest, I didn't watch BD from the beginning because the promos made it look like a typical, desi romance show... full of unbridled passion and unexplained attraction. I thought to myself, I'll just watch the highlight episodes as I do with many shows in this genre. Only because I happened to be in India at the time and caught a few episodes did I realize that this was something more substantial that merited discussion and thought.
And I am not saying I never want them to let down their veneer, of course I do! But I am more than happy with the fact that they are not treating passion/lust/attraction like a force that one can't control, as they do in other shows. I like the idea of the barriers slowly coming down to allow the feelings in(which is what we are seeing) as opposed to the "passion" breaking the barriers, which I believe is unrealistic and does not make for convincing, long-term love. Their passion will overtake them, but only when their barriers are lowered... a process which is partly in their own hands. It's a love story between two mature and guarded individuals and I think they are bringing that out marvelously.
In short, as much as I love the cliches, I don't really miss them here because I feel we are getting something even better. The saree scene was damn hot but I didn't find it half as affecting as watching Abeer defending Meher in front all and sundry (including her own brother and dad) but being unable to drop his veneer in front of the dame herself. And I just love watching the way Meher's whole countenance softens when Abeer is genuine with her. I do believe the intensity will come, but at another stage of the story... and in the mean time, I am fully enjoying where we are now.
P.S. Hear, hear on the office, though!
