Here's an article about some of the actresses who bleached their skin:

Dusky Divas Who Underwent Skin Lightening Treatment

Sridevi

Just look at the pictures above. Sridevi started her career in films at a very young age as a child artist. However, while Sridevi may have continued acting over the years, she got herself entangled in quite a few controversies for her constant change in physical appearance. From a dark, chubby leading lady in Solva Sawan; Sridevi's transformation as a light skinned woman in her other films is very noticeable. The actress is believed to have gone under the knife for a nose job apart from skin whitening treatment.

Shilpa Shetty

She has been in the limelight for quite some time in spite of remaining aloof from acting. Rumours surround her of having undergone skin lightening treatment, but she has dismissed them casually, calling it her pregnancy glow. Well, we never really knew that pregnancy glow can change your skin colour this extent (and permanently), or can it?

Rekha

Bhanurekha Ganesan was a dark complexioned, chubby teenager who somehow was forced to work in the big bad world of films. However, the South Indian girl took it upon herself and transformed from what she herself called an "Ugly Duckling" and the Rekha we know today was born. Rekha glows with radiance even today and from someone who once called herself "dark complexioned", she is anything, but that today! Gossip mills have been abuzz with the fact that Rekha went through skin lightening treatment.

Priyanka Chopra

Among the many surgeries and treatments she has undergone, skin lightening treatment is one of them. Compare her recent images to those of her Miss World days, and it is clear that she is a fairer reflection of her former self. It is rumoured that she underwent the treatment sometime in the past four years.

Kajol

Kajol came under the scanner when rumours of her sudden 'fair' skin started doing the rounds. Kajol has off late been making heads turn for her fairer skin that has had industry people in a tizz. Speculations are rife that the actresses has undergone a skin whitening treatment. One may remember Kajol from her earlier films like Baazigar where one can see her skin tone. While later in films like My Name Is Khan Kajol's skin colour lightened for the screen. However, this change was attributed to make-up and didn't create a stir. It was only at a recent event did gossip mongers concentrate on a rather fair complexioned Kajol.

Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu was voted one of the sexiest woman in Asia for the year 2005 and 2007. She was named as the Dusky Beauty' of Bollywood. She was always quoted as saying "I am dark-skinned and am proud of it". However, hypocrisy slipped out of her nature forced by pity taunts and hurtful comments, and she finally gave in. Sometime in the recent past the actress decided to undergo skin bleaching, and a source close to her confirms of media speculations.

Hema Malini

It is believed that the Dream Girl, Hema Malini too could not be spared by the fair skin syndrome. There are rumours that Hema Malini who sported a wheatish complexion from the beginning of her career, became fair over night! Not that we think, Hema Malini needed any of that, there are speculations that she too took the doctor's help. Hema Malini is also believed to have gotten a face lift later on in life. No wonder Hema Malini's face looks wrinkle free and perfect even at this age!

ADDED: Deepika

Not sure about Deepika, but it's possible.

--I'm just curious to know what people think of this. Do you prefer how they looked before or after? What do you guys think of skin bleaching in general?

To survive in the industry i guess! Though it is indeed sad.
Dont think Pc got bleaching done. PC still looks dusky in some of her offscreen pics. 😊 Most of the times its just make up.

I say be happy with what you have. I don't see any reason to bleach your skin or change your appearance through plastic surgery, especially when you were already beautiful to begin with. And I know this is a deeply embedded cultural mentality, but I will continue to fight against that idea. Beauty is not color-limited.

Here's what I think about these ladies:

Sridevi - She was fine before. She doesn't look bad with her current skin tone either, but I don't like her new nose.

Shilpa - I think for her, it was just a matter of growing up and grooming herself. That's all she needed. Nonetheless, she still looks beautiful now.

Rekha - Honestly, she looks far more beautiful in the picture on the right with her natural skin tone. She looks like Michael Jackson on the left.

Priyanka Chopra - She was pretty then and she is still pretty now, but slightly fake looking. She won Miss World but still felt like she needed to change her look.

Kajol - When I was growing up, I thought Kajol was so beautiful. Her skin color never even crossed my mind. She was beautiful the way she was and she looked beautiful with minimal makeup. With her lighter skin, she looks pretty now too, but I never advocate bleaching your skin.

Bipasha - I was so happy that she was proudly representing tanned skin. She looked like she was going to make a difference. But she too fell into the pressure and that's sad.

Hema Malini - I can't believe even she lightened her skin, when she wasn't even that dark to begin with. Beautiful then, still beautiful now, but again - I don't agree with bleaching. It's sending out a horrible message to society.

What I don't understand is why do they bring dark girls in the industry and then force them to lighten their skin?? If the industry prefers lighter skin, why not just hire fair skinned girls? I thought having actresses like Kajol, Priyanka, and Bipasha could have really made a difference, but it's really unfortunate that we see them changing their skin tone. It sends out a really negative message to society.

Everyone is trying to live up to society's expectations what is considered to be good looking. Also, add Deepika to this list. Anyways, it's an individual choice, whoever wants to do what with their face and body. Some Caucasian people want to get tans and some South Asian people want to look "whiter". It's all about CHOICE.

Was it really an individual choice or was it someone else's choice? I don't think any of these ladies would have done this if they didn't feel some sort of pressure. Bipasha caved into the hurtful comments.

at the end of the day, it is your choice. If you are under pressure, you are not obligated to do certain things . Yes, there is a bad side to the entertainment industry but the people mentioned in this post have received some sort of success so they were not forced to do anything. Celebs are in positions of privilege.

These actresses are doing what the society expects them to be fair & lovely. They are following typical social dikat that fairness is superior and popular. As there is a heavy influx of caucasian and foreigners in Bollywood, the actors going for fairness for survival.

Anyways if you cleanse tone and moisturize on regular basis along with sunscreen then your skin starts glowing. The actors have not gone for bleaching as it is temporary and harmful. They are probably using chemical peels and masks for de-tanning. I am a beauty obsessed person and believe me people say I had became fairer after my school days as I take care of my skin regularly.
