Deepika has also gone for skin lightening.

Fact is people are obsessed with fair skin. It indicates not only beauty but also high class/caste for them..

I have seen people remark how a certain actress was "kaali kalooti" earlier but improved now. They don't even think they are being racist as they say such words.

Even pregnant women are fed concoctions so that they give birth to a fair baby. What do you expect in this country and industry then?

It's just not registered as racism... People think they're stating a fact when they comment on dark skin

This also to an extent represents the relative lack of respect for Black people

Lack of respect?

I feel there is NO respect for Black people in India!

You will find all sorts of derogatory terms for them and remarks on how strange or ugly they look.

I can't even begin to describe the racism of Indians towards Blacks!

well we asian descent got a thing for fair skin and its a reality and i don't mind skin bleaching

as long as we don't act hypocritical about it

You can't even blame the actresses. Sadly it's a age old cultural norm/inbuilt inferiority complex that being lighter equals to higher status. Unfortunately this attitude is not gonna change any time soon (if ever). It's quite amazing how people casually pass racist/snide remarks about darker people and am sure that parents of an Indian child would be more accepting if they married a Caucasian person over an African person. 😛

I'm not sure what these ladies did (Deepika included), but they're all definitely trying to portray themselves as fairer. In fact, I was surprised at Priyanka's skin tone in the Quantico trailer because I'm used to seeing her in the bollywood lighting

I can't really blame them though. The darker you are, the more likely you'll get only vampish roles. I remember when Fashion came out, and everyone was raving about Mugda Godse, but she pretty much went nowhere.

PC, Deepika, etc, they all had to do what they had to do if they wanted to get roles...it's the sad thing about BW

Deepika wasn't included in the article, but she too might have gone through the procedure. Anyways, I changed the title of this thread a bit. I was also curious to know what do you guys think of their before and after pics. Do you think they looked good before, after, or both? I know it's a difficult question, but I want to know how the audience feels about it and if the audience's reaction also influences actresses to go through with the procedure.
