Two years ago, choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant was on the judges' panel with Saroj Khan and Terrence Lewis in the Sony talent hunt, Dance Dance. Anchored by Jaaved Jaafri, it had had the common man making his/her moves. The show failed to attract attention and not many even recall it today.
Now, Vaibhavi is back on the small screen as judge for Star's Nach Baliye 3. With the no-nonsense Saroj Khan not on the panel, all eyes are on Vaibhavi to step into her shoes. But Vaibhavi has no agenda about how she will react to a super-duper/ deplorable performance by the jodis. "It has to be impromptu. May be if I think the jodi has done a super dance, I may get on the dance floor and learn the steps from them!"
State of mind
Since Vaibhavi is the only choreographer on the jury, with actress Ishaa Koppikar and director David Dhawan as her co-partners. "People wonder how I will react, but I understand what goes on in the minds of the choreographers who devise the moves for the jodis. In fact, I will have plenty of interactions with them too for a better understanding," she says.
Vaibhavi points out that as the contestants are non-dancers trying to be dancers, she has to look at them with different eyes. "I can't be too critical and tell them your hand movement is not perfect. Dance is all encompassing. Apart from the movements, your attitude also matters. Dance is a state of mind. It should reach out and appeal to the onlooker," she says.
