The actress shares her experiences about Maayka and the new show that she will host soon

Q You are already busy doing a daily soap. Does that give you enough time to host a show?
I have never done anchoring before. With Gharelu Nuskey I am trying to test the waters and see how good or bad I can be as a host though I know for sure that I won't do a bad job. The show will not take much of my time as I am required to shoot for just four to five days in a month. With this show I will reach out to women who are television's core audience.

Q What's the format of the show and what kind of tips will you be giving to housewives?
It is a studio-based show and therefore there is no live anchoring. It consists of two to three-minute spots which will be telecast on Star's afternoon prime time between 1 pm and 3 pm wherein I will offer interesting trivia, useful tips on beauty and heath and insightful tid-bits on how to take away stains from clothes without using chemicals and how to keep your skin supple and nourished or even something as earthy as preparing oil free, healthy and tasty food in a jiffy. I am sure women are going to like the show.

Q What made you accept the show as it does not have a proper or regular half hour format?
I think television is not about half hour or one hour shows. Television is all about information, education and entertainment. Gharelu Nuskey is informative and educative. Even a two-minute spot can make as much impact as a half hour show. Doesn't a 10-second commercial help sell a product?

Q How is Maayka doing and how has been Mahi's journey so far?
It is doing quite well. Everyone is happy with the ratings. As regards the character's journey, from being a single girl Mahi has come a long way. She is a married woman fighting for her own space and independence in her own way. Like any Indian married woman she also has difference of opinion with her husband over many things.

Q Is Maayka a better show than Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai?
I don't think there is any comparison between the two shows. Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai was an urban love story and Maayka is a family drama set in a traditional family and values. I can't compare my right hand with my left.

Q Are you happy with the way your career is going?
Yes, I am doing fine. My first show was aired on Sony; the second show is on Zee and the third is for Star Plus. So in three years I have covered most of the Hindi general entertainment space.

Q You have done seven films in the south? Have you done a film recently there?
Yes, I finished shooting for Dubai Chinu about one and half months back. It is a Telugu film.

Sporting a different look in shows has become part of life for many stars. But this can also be a risky affair if there is a slight mishap.

Such is the story of Vineet Raina, who is shuffling between his two shows Maayka and Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai. While enacting a scene on the sets of Maayka, the actor's hair caught fire and his hair line went out of shape due to the burn. Now, he is having a tough time maintaining his looks, even after a hair cut.

Vineet burnt his hair while filming a wedding sequence where he had to take pheras. The mandap was lit with several lights and the actor had a turban on his head.

Due to some technical faults, there were sparks. "Because of the turban, I didn't realise that a burning piece of plastic fell on my turban. Suddenly, I felt some burning sensation on my head, when a unit member began to shout that my hair had caught fire. I rushed to the nearby bathroom before the others could rush to my rescue. But, the damage was done. Thankfully, I put off the burning piece before it burnt my scalp," says Vineet.

The actor, who went for a haircut and also sported a new hairstyle, says, "I have trimmed my hair but I still have to take the help of heavy make- up everyday to hide the mark. I couldn't shave my head completely as it would have badly affected the continuity".

Vineet's accident has resulted in him being teased by his family and friends.

Says Vineet, "Everyone at home has been teasing me. But, I'm having a difficult time maintaining my look for two shows simultaneously."

Actor Romit Raj who plays the character of Yuvraj in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, recently walked out of the dubbing studio for a crucial scene because he was almost on the verge of collapsing owing to high temperature. The show in which the story is currently based on him showing the revelation of the bad boy in front of his family,is keeping him busy apart from the other show Maayka he stars in.

Apparently Romit has been sick for the past few days due to shooting continuously in a rain sequence throughout the night. Ultimately the poor chap fell sick but the professional that he is, did not stop shooting. Finally he was almost on the verge of collapsing when they asked him to stop and take some well needed rest. A non-tea drinker, Romit was also drank tea that day.

<> " I knew Romit was sick but since he came for the dubbing we continued with it anyways. But suddenly his condition got worse ultimately we had to ask him to stop and take some rest. He is one person who over works himself and doesn't stop at anything. Its nice to see his dedication but I wish he knew would realize his limits to the point he doesn't damage his health." Says Rajesh, the sound manager who was present with him.

Well Romit, we would like to wish you a happy recovery and would advice you to take it easy!

Klassic Films alleges they were dropped from Maayka because the show's ousted director is married to Zee's creative head, Pearl Shahi
Real-Life Sob Story? A scene from Maayka

Rajan Shahi
There's a fresh twist to the on-going imbroglio between the cast and crew of Maayka and the channel (Zee TV).

The ousted producers, Klassic Films, allege that ever since the series director Rajan Shahi was shown the door they've been victimised by Zee. Reason?

Rajan is the husband of Zee's creative head, Pearl Shahi. As a result they had to pay the price and lose out on Maayka.

Bad attitude

For the past few days, the cast and crew of Maayka have refused to shoot in a bid to express solidarity with Klassic Films.

Meanwhile, Zee has roped in Dheeraj Kumar's Creative Eye as the new production house for Maayka. The channel has even blacklisted several actors for refusing to shoot with the new set-up.

"We have no clue what is going to happen to Maayka. But the cast is with us," says writer Anjana Sood, creative head, Klassic Films. "The cast has already told the channel that they will not shoot for another production house.

The thing is that everyone is fed up with Rajan Shahi's attitude. Most of the time his assistants would be directing the show. He always had this air that since his wife works with Zee he can lord around.

He even demanded a fee hike that we couldn't afford. He would always overshoot and has used at least 400 tapes for 80 episodes!" points out Sood.

Arm-twisting

Maayka has been on air since January and the cast includes Sudhir Pandey, Nandita Puri, Arti Singh and Urmila Kanitkar, among others, who have openly expressed their support to Klassic Films.

"Ever since Zee's creative head Vivek Behl moved to Star, there have been several hiccups. When he was around, production houses knew what was happening."

According to Zee Network's senior vice president, Ashish Kaul, everything is well with Maayka and the new production house is working on the nitty-gritties before starting the shoot.

Says Kaul, "It is easy for Klassic Films to point fingers, but they don't realise the consequences. We're taking the issue to the Indian Broadcasting Federation. Klassic Films has indulged in arm-twisting and terror tactics.

In the past, we discussed certain shortcomings with regards to their production standards, delivery of episodes and script. As a result we had to change the production house."

As no fresh episodes have been shot since the weekend and a lack of banked episodes, Zee has no choice but to telecast repeats.

Aloof yes, arrogant no!

Actor Neha Bamb, who is currently essaying the role of Mahi in 'Maayka' (Zee), was recently replaced from 'Gharelu Nuske' (Star Plus)—a noon show she had hosted barely for an episode or two.

While some attribute it to her poor diction and mediocre hosting skills, her alleged high-handed behaviour is also said to have made it difficult for the producer to work with her.

When quizzed about it, Neha says, "I had taken up this show because I thought it would be a good change from doing serials. I thought it would allow me to connect with the audiences. But I wasn't enjoying it as much as I had thought I would." She continues,

"Moreover, the creative unit started introducing a lot of Urdu in my script. I found this difficult. I told the makers that it was not working out well. I also asked them to give me a month to get myself accustomed to anchoring and the format of the show. But they replaced me. Maybe, they didn't have the time to allow me to experiment."

However that doesn't deter her confidence. She says, "I think I did fine. I work for my satisfaction. I don't have to prove myself to anyone. I am still willing to take up another anchor-based show provided the makers give me and the show reasonable time to develop."

Denying that she ever threw tantrums, she clarifies, "If I were so difficult to work with, I wouldn't have been working here for so long. In fact, for 'Gharelu Nuske', I had shot for 14 hours continuously without eating food."

So why is she perceived as snooty? She explains, "I am not easily accessible to everyone. I prefer to maintain a distance with my colleagues. I don't think one has to make friends at work. I believe if you don't maintain a distance, you will not be respected.

I strongly believe in the phrase, 'Familiarity breeds contempt'. Maybe that's perceived as being snooty. I give no one the right to judge me. I was just 17 when I started working. I know to protect my dignity. However, now I have stopped being blunt and learnt to be diplomatic."

... because it allows me to live life queen size. Once you establish yourself as an actor, you get paid enough to live a lavish lifestyle. I can't complain about the fame either. My line of work has also taught me a thing or two about people and attitude. It taught me how to be realistic.

But then: Working for a daily soap means forfeiting the luxury of sick leaves. I have to report to work, no matter what.

Parmeet Sethi's Bawarchi act in Maayka

After Star One's Don was unceremoniously pulled off air, Parmeet Sethi went missing from the scene for sometime. He resurfaced as an anchor in Jhalak Dikhhla Ja and now the handsome hunk is enjoying his stint as an Bawarchi in Zee's Maayka.

"I love being Prem Kishen who's like Rajesh Khanna from the old flick Bawarchi. Thank God, It's not a age driven character. In the past, I have been offered father roles in many K soaps but I politely turn them down. I would hate to portray elderly roles on television. I was in the serial for just a few episodes and now as the story is set for a big twist, I have been called back."

For the uninitiated, Maayka has had its share of problems. The production house was changed midway with a few members of the main starcast walking out of the show.

Das Gupta from Creative Eye says, "Parmeet is a known face and also has a good sense of humour. We hope he will help us garner TRPs along with building up the new track."

"Parmeet is known for his comic timing. We roped him in for a few episodes as he was busy with some other commitments. Now, we're planning to develop his role further. The real drama will unfold on 19 September," adds Meeraj Sachdev, Creative head, Maayka.

Meanwhile, the current track focuses on Soni (Shilpa Shinde) and Veer (Vineet Raina). This week Jeet (Romit Raj) returns home. He finds out that his love Soni is getting married to his elder brother Veer. Jeet is in a state of shock. Prem's entry will unfold a few truths to take the plot forward.

For more on the drama keep watching this space !

Kavita Shyam

Neha Bamb was commissioned to anchor a recently launched afternoon show, Gharelu Nuskhey on Star Plus.

Neha Bamb
Apparently the channel is not very happy with her performance. We've heard she will soon be replaced with Gurdeep Kohli or Maninee De. The show is already on air and Neha has shot for some episodes that will last a month.

Says a source from the production house, "Neha is very stiff and not up to the mark as an anchor. Besides, her diction is far from perfect. The channel and the production house is seriously thinking of replacing her soon. The channel is very keen on Gurdeep as she has been their favourite."

Neha, who is clueless about this development, says, "I did not like myself in the initial episodes as I was a bit uncomfortable doing the show. It's not easy to talk to people without a script. It's an anchor-based show and I have never done that kind of show before. I haven't heard about me being replaced in the show but if they decide to do so I can't do much about it. I have got my schedules fixed for the show, so far. This show is an experiment for me."

However, the producer, Sanjay Virmani, Multimedia Productions preferred to be non-committal. He said, "It's for the viewers to decide if our anchor is up to the mark or not. Finally the programming officials in the channel will decide whether they want her or someone else. The channel has to be ultimately happy with the product."

Gharelu Nuskhe is Neha's first show with Star Plus. She became popular as Kripa in Sony TV's Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai and currently she's playing the lead in Maayka on Zee TV.

Neha is excited for her marriage
7 Sep 2007, 0000 hrs IST

Neha Bamb (TOI Photo)
'Just the two of us in a house... oh my God!'

Three months to go and on December 6, Neha Bamb will become Mrs Rishiraj Jhaveri officially, though she may continue to work in serials as Neha Bamb or Neha Bamb Jhaveri!

Presently she is busy buying things for their home in Chembur, gifted to them by her father-in-law. Rishi chips in jokingly, "I am very excited about the marriage, it's the first one for me."

Talking about their home, Rishi says, "Since both of us don't have the time to sit and draw up plans, I have an architect friend of mine from the US to design the house. On Sundays, both of us go selecting furniture."

And on the gift he proposes to give Neha, the jeweller remarks, "First, it's the diamond engagement ring that I have for her." The formal engagement is slated to take place a few days before the wedding.

When she is not shooting as Maahi of Maayka , she shops for her trousseau but not at the cost of bunking shoots. "Whenever I have half-a-day's shoot, I spend the rest of the day with my family shopping for the wedding. I am not buying too many outfits. Fashion changes quickly and I don't want to unnecessarily spend money on something which is so fickle."

It's a week-long Marwari wedding (Neha is a Maru and Rishi is a Gujju) with sangeet, mehendi, kumkum, girl's night, cocktail, shaadi and reception. She plans to sport the ethnic stuff for the shaadi but wishes to go for something special and out of the ordinary for the reception, "I don't want to wear the regular ghagra-choli or sari. I plan to wear something different."

She is going to miss her family a lot as she points out, "I come from a joint family which consists of eight cousins and two siblings. Whenever my mom went out of town, my aunts were always around and I would never feel alone. I wonder how I am going to cope up in a house with just the two of us."
