Classic production house, which was producing Maayka, has been sacked by the channel (Zee) due to poor time management and high overhead costs. The development has been kept closely guarded, but our channel sources say that Dheeraj Kumar's production house Creative Eye is taking over.

The cast of Maayka
Since the inception of Maayka, the production house has been unable to get anything right. There have always been problems meeting the deadlines, which has irritated the channel for a long time.

As the channel also shares a certain percentage of the cost, they contribute Rs five-six lakh rupees per episode, which is very high for a serial like Maayka.

For every shoot which is supposed to wrap up within eight hours, it would take sixteen hours. This resulted in failure to meet with deadlines.

Moreover, there have been problems with uplinking the daily episodes, resulting in high costs.

On the other hand, Dheeraj Kumar's Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan has been a success. And he has been pitching to take over another serial for the channel. Now, the channel has decided to hand over Maayka to him.

Anajana Sood, creative head of Classic Production house, however refused to divulge any details. "It's just too early to talk about anything," she said.

Dheeraj Kumar, on the other hand said, "We just had a discussion over the issue. I cannot talk about it; it's the channel's call ultimately."

Unrest on the sets of 'Maayka'

The cast of the serial 'Maayka' (Zee) has revolted against the channel's decision to change the production house from Classic Productions to Dheeraj Kumar's Creative Eye. Apparently, the channel changed the production house because the unit caused undue delays and went over budget.

However, the actors feel that that channel has been unfair to Classic Productions. Actor Urmila Kanitkar, (Raaji Malhotra) says, "We've nothing against the channel but they need to understand that their staff is trying to create misunderstandings between the higher authorities and the production house. If they change the production house, we will quit the serial. It's our choice whether we want to continue working with the new production house."

Anjana Sood, creative head, Classic Productions throws more light on the issue. She says, "Right from the beginning, channel representatives—executive producer Gautam Hegde and the creative head Pearl Shahi have been interfering. They've been pushing their agenda.

Read latest news at DNA
They would create misunderstandings between us and the higher authorities." Incidentally, Pearl's husband Rajan Shahi was the director on the show. Anjana adds, "We had written several letters to the channel asking for their intervention. Instead we got a letter saying that we were no longer producing the show."

Ashish Kaul, senior vice-president, Zee Enterprises Ltd, says, "It is not about individuals. The people accused of creating misunderstandings are professionals and work in the interest of the company.

The fact is that we were unsatisfied with the show's production quality and creative aspects. If the actors walk out, then we will blacklist them. And if there are so many problems, then we wouldn't mind taking the show off air."

(l-r) Neha Bamb, Sudhir Pandey, Nandita Puri, Urmila Kanitkar and Aarti Singh

Zee is all set to blacklist nine actors of the popular daily Maayka and the production house (Classic Productions) very soon. Recently Zee TV sacked the production house of Maayka, Classic Films, and handed over the show to Creative Eye. Soon after, the actors and the production house called for a press conference to protest against the channel's decision.

The actors who have been blacklisted include Sudhir Pandey, Neha Bamb, Nandita Puri, Arti Singh, Pankaj Berry, Vinit Raina, Mohini Sharma, Urmila Kanitkar and Vikrant.

Reportedly the actors will be sued to the tune of crores of rupees each for defaming the channel and its executives. Ashish Kaul, executive VP, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, confirmed that they were thinking of taking action against the actors and the production house. He said, "We are thinking on those lines. The production house and the actors had called for a press conference defaming the executives. This was simply uncalled for. The production house should not have used the artistes to speak against the channel. We have decided that the artistes who create problems for the new production house will surely be blacklisted. We will also blacklist the production house across the entertainment industry and take the case to the Indian Broadcasting Federation. We can't take this defamation of a channel lying down. We on our part have done things according to the contract and have the authority to change the production house. What ever has happened has been very unfortunate."

Says Nandita Puri aka Moni in support of the production house and the actors, "We have been working for Maayka since day one and the serial had taken off on a good note. The TRPs were progressively going up and the production house took good care of us. Initially the Executive Producers from the channel put a lot of pressure and wanted to change the director, re-shoot the scenes and complained endlessly. All this affected our productivity. The production house and the Executive Producers had a lot of problems and this internal politics was getting to us. So all of us actors made a request to the channel in support of the production house. The request did not help and the programming officer called up saying if the artistes did not co-operate they would simply blacklist us."

The cast of the show has approached CINTAA after being threatened by the channel that they would be blacklisted The unrest on the sets of 'Maayka' (Zee) has only aggravated. After the channel expressed that it was considering blacklisting the actors for resisting the change in the production house (from Classic Productions to Creative Eye), actors have approached the Cine and TV Artistes Association (CINTAA) for intervention.

Actor Sudhir Pandey (plays Brij Malhotra) says, "Yes, I have approached CINTAA. I have been in this industry for long but have never witnessed such behaviour from any channel. I am neither against the channel nor am I speaking on behalf of Classic Productions. I am only speaking in support of them."

Sudhir continues, "Everyone has the right to choose whom to work with. So do we. My contract was with Classic Productions. How can anyone force me to enter into a contract with another production house in its place?"

Vikrant Rai, who plays Jeet in the serial, was furious at this threat. He says, "How can they use the word 'blacklist'? Have we committed a crime ? When we had gone to the channel to seek their intervention, we were told that we were not supposed to come there." He adds, "The channel feels that we are against them, which is not the fact. We are just against their decision. Why is Classic Productions being replaced when it was not their mistake at all? Aren't channels supposed to be just a platform for serial makers who want to air shows?"

Ashish Kaul, senior vice-president, Zee Enterprises Ltd, on his part says, "Let the actors think what they want to. We are aware of what we are doing. To state the fact, senior actors and representatives of the production house had been called for a meeting with senior officials at Zee and they were given a fair chance to be heard."

Ashish had earlier said that the channel had replaced the production house because they found 'the production quality and creative aspects' of Classic Productions unsatisfactory.

He condemned the channel's decision of changing the production house of 'Maayka'

The cast of 'Maayka' (Zee) was under the threat of being 'blacklisted' by the channel if they continued their resistance against the change in its production house (from Classic Productions to Creative Eye).

Subsequently, Vikrant Rai (Jeet in 'Maayka'), who was also acting as Kshitij in 'Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan' (Zee) has been ousted from the latter serial. Vikrant says, "I was told by the channel's creative head that I am out of the serial." An upset Vikrant adds, "I suspect the channel did this to teach me a lesson because I was vocal about their changing the production house of 'Maayka'. But I have made my character Kshitij popular. Initially, my role was a cameo, but I performed so well that they increased its length. How can they sack me when I had no contract with them?"

Ashish Kaul, senior vice-president, Zee Enterprises Ltd., says, "Yes, Vikrant has been sacked for not co-operating with the channel. Anyone who doesn't co-operate with the channel and does anything to harm its interest could face such consequences. We are happy with the way things are progressing after Creative Eye has taken over and we are sure it will take 'Maayka' to new heights."

Vikrant Sabharwal
Vikrant Sabharwal, who was playing major roles in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan and Maayka is out of both shows. Vikrant opposed Zee's decision to sack the production house of Maayka and subsequently was ousted from the show. Maayka has been taken over by Dheeraj Kumar's Creative Eye from Klassic production house. Vikrant's other show, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, was anyways produced by Creative Eye, and consequently he's been sacked from that too for his rebellious attitude.

However, Vikrant seems unperturbed by this sudden development in his life. He says, "I stood for Klassic Production house because I thought it was not ethical on channel's part to give the show over to Creative Eye. I know, it's all a part of a bigger conspiracy, and if you don't fit in the system, you will be thrown out. Although, I was in the most vulnerable position, because I was doing Creative Eye's Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan too, I stood for my beliefs. Consequently, I was out of Maayka and my association with the character of Jeet Khurana ended there."

The actor approached actor's association to complain. Consequently, Creative Eye was asked for an explanation by the association. He then got a call from Creative Eye and thought he was not ousted. But Vikrant's misunderstood. He says, "They just sent me a letter that read like an obituary and said it had been a good experience working with me. I have been told that my character Kshitij has been replaced by someone else. "

Vikrant believes that he should keep walking. He says, "I don't want to continue this rubbish. I stood for what I felt was right but I have moved on. I have a couple of offers, but it's too early to talk about them now."

Ashish Kaul, vice-president of Zee Telefilms, said, "I guess this specific actor was bad-mouthing the channel. However, he being ousted from shows is a completely creative call. At the end of the day, the channel has to protect its interests."

Klassic Films alleges they were dropped from Maayka because the show's ousted director is married to Zee's creative head, Pearl Shahi
Real-Life Sob Story? A scene from Maayka

Rajan Shahi
There's a fresh twist to the on-going imbroglio between the cast and crew of Maayka and the channel (Zee TV).

The ousted producers, Klassic Films, allege that ever since the series director Rajan Shahi was shown the door they've been victimised by Zee. Reason?

Rajan is the husband of Zee's creative head, Pearl Shahi. As a result they had to pay the price and lose out on Maayka.

Bad attitude

For the past few days, the cast and crew of Maayka have refused to shoot in a bid to express solidarity with Klassic Films.

Meanwhile, Zee has roped in Dheeraj Kumar's Creative Eye as the new production house for Maayka. The channel has even blacklisted several actors for refusing to shoot with the new set-up.

"We have no clue what is going to happen to Maayka. But the cast is with us," says writer Anjana Sood, creative head, Klassic Films. "The cast has already told the channel that they will not shoot for another production house.

The thing is that everyone is fed up with Rajan Shahi's attitude. Most of the time his assistants would be directing the show. He always had this air that since his wife works with Zee he can lord around.

He even demanded a fee hike that we couldn't afford. He would always overshoot and has used at least 400 tapes for 80 episodes!" points out Sood.

Arm-twisting

Maayka has been on air since January and the cast includes Sudhir Pandey, Nandita Puri, Arti Singh and Urmila Kanitkar, among others, who have openly expressed their support to Klassic Films.

"Ever since Zee's creative head Vivek Behl moved to Star, there have been several hiccups. When he was around, production houses knew what was happening."

According to Zee Network's senior vice president, Ashish Kaul, everything is well with Maayka and the new production house is working on the nitty-gritties before starting the shoot.

Says Kaul, "It is easy for Klassic Films to point fingers, but they don't realise the consequences. We're taking the issue to the Indian Broadcasting Federation. Klassic Films has indulged in arm-twisting and terror tactics.

In the past, we discussed certain shortcomings with regards to their production standards, delivery of episodes and script. As a result we had to change the production house."

As no fresh episodes have been shot since the weekend and a lack of banked episodes, Zee has no choice but to telecast repeats.

A still from Maayka

After the Maayka fiasco, wherein 15 actors were sacked after they refused to work with a new production house, the actors have now got a new lease of life.

Apparently these actors have been approached by Classik Productions to be a part of another show, based on the same theme, for Sahara One.

Aarti Singh and Urmila Kanitkar have been approached to play the main leads.

Reportedly, the show will be on the lines of Maayka with a different name, but will have all the actors who are just out of Maayka.

The channel and the production house are in the process of finalising the show.

Aarti Singh who has been approached to play the lead in the new show says, "I am aware of the fact that Classik Productions is doing something for Sahara One. I would love to be a part of the show and they are giving me a lead role. But I am out of town so once I am back I will talk to them about it. Let's see how it works out."

Nandita Puri, another sacked actor, says, "We chose not to work with the new producer (Creative Eye) as we were supporting our previous production house (Classik Productions). Now that we have moved out of the show we are hoping to get some work soon. An attempt is being made to make a serial where all of us star together."

Although Kalyan Sundaram, Sahara One Programming Head preferred to keep quiet about the show, he did say, "We are talking to Anjana Sood, of Classik Productions for a show. But nothing is finalised yet."

Television heartthrob Iqbal Khan's pretty wife Sneha is in the eye of the storm for allegedly having a malicious online anti-Balaji avatar

If you thought vicious vamps and twisted plots were part of K serials alone, you couldn't be more wrong. And you don't have to take our word for it. Just log on to one of the online forums that discusses Indian TV shows, and you will be surprised by the theatrics that go on. One such dramatic post that has been going on for about three years now, is responsible for dubbing Sneha Khan, wife of television heartthrob Iqbal Khan, as the internet bashing queen 'dinky21/15'.

Starting on the India forums website under the name 'dinky21', this mean member of the forum who claimed to be Iqbal Khan's "sweetheart" Sneha, has spared no one. Her posts are mostly pro-Khan but everyone else dealing with Khan in the industry are at the receiving end of rude comments. 'Dinky' who later claimed to be Iqbal's wife, called Ekta a "criminal" and continued bashing all of Iqbal's co-workers, especially Neha Bamb aka Kripa of Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hain. So much so that moderators of the forum who couldn't control 'dinky's' malicious posts were forced to close down one section of the forum and ban her.

But she returned as 'dinky15' and this time with a more venomous attitude towards Neha Bamb. "I want to strangle her to death", "I'll kill her if she comes to my wedding" and "I can't stand her voice. infact i love the person dubbing for her... i wud be cursed if i heard kripa's (Bamb's) real voice..." are some of the comments targeted at Neha Bamb, who along with Iqbal, makes the hit Angad-Kripa pair. Though this is common knowledge in the industry now, Neha rubbishes these claims. "When you are a public personality, some people like you while others don't, all for reasons unknown to you. I am not bothered and don't have any time for such trivial matters. I'd rather concentrate on my work."

Though rumours have it that this is also one of the reasons that the Balaji camp and other co-actors are miffed with Iqbal Khan, the actor completely denies that it could be his wife. He says, "It's an open forum. Anyone can assume any identity and say anything that comes to their mind. That doesn't mean that it is true. Sneha is my wife and she would never stoop to such levels. I have been aware of such comments doing the rounds for the last couple of years and I've never attached much importance to them."

He adds, "Why would she want to do such a thing... it's so stupid! It's such a negative thing to do and my wife is definitely a part of the positive side in my life. She's not capable of such acts. Even if we assume that she said those things, why would she need to hide behind a false name? Tomorrow someone else may assume another identity and pretend it's her; that doesn't mean it will actually be my wife." While Iqbal continues to support his wife, the saga continues on posts across the Net. wonder if Ekta smells a story here?
