http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/gurgaon-man-sets-himself-ablaze-police-wife-fir/1/439051.html
A man set himself on fire in front of the ACP's office in Gurgaon. His wife had slapped charges under #498A.

Another martyr of marriage.

The very nature of anti-dowry law makes it wife-biased (daughter-in-law biased), discriminatory, stringent, unprecedented, exceptional and poorly formulated. One line of written or oral complaint from your wife or her family member can land husband and his entire family in jail without any investigation.

" So we come to the grand conclusion, the open secret, the lifeblood of Indian bail industry: that IPC 498a is the best way to slow and clog down the criminal courts, to make money for legal system to arrange bail for 1.97 lakh people (and increasing) arrested every year. With percentage of convicted people to arrested people at 4%, is surely goes in line with the judicial maxim "It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer". When you arrest 25 people to convict 1, that must be a sure sign of a great civilization near the Indian ocean on a sure and steady path to become the next superpower!"

Excerpts from the suicide note left by Avadhesh Yadav, a victim of 498a

"My name is Avadhesh Yadav and I work in a private bank. I got married to Unnati Yadav on December 7, 2012. Within a week of marriage, she started pestering my family by asking divorce for no reason. We ignored. She never allowed me to come close to her for 2-3 months after the marriage. My father advised that with time everything will be fine. But it got only worse. She started misbehaving with my parents, hurling abuses at them. When we complained about this to her family, they gave excuses of some "external influence" on her and they would get her treated. She now started going almost every day at her home and threatened us of a dowry case if we said anything.

In September 2013, she left my home. In December, my father was getting retired and he wished that his daughter-in-law should be part of this program. We signed a mutual agreement where she accepted her wrongdoings and promised to be cordial with the family and I promised to do everything possible to take good care of her. She came back only to harass us even more. She demanded that I leave my parents. Threats of dowry and domestic violence cases increased. Things came to a point where she left my home again in July 2014 with her entire belongings.

On advice of lawyers, we filed a case of restitution of conjugal rights, requesting her to come back. Three months after that in September, she filed a false dowry and domestic violence case (498A) on me, my mother, father, elder brother and his wife. We got bail. Her brother told me she wants to come back.

I refused saying now this was not possible and suggested that we get separated amicably. He refused and threatened me of false cases of molestation, rape on my father and brother and, acid attack on me and getting me killed. Unnati eventually filed a case of molestation in January on my father and brother and they were arrested. I don't know what will this step of mine lead to but I want to save my family from all this humiliation. After I go, they would probably be in peace. I also wish to ask our law makers, how they can make laws that give so much credence to mere words of a woman that whatever the other person is saying has no relevance. Shouldn't the other side be heard too? My father and brother were picked up by police on her statement alone without any evidence.

My family that never even saw a police station has to now do the rounds just because of me. Without any evidence we have been labelled Criminals. Nothing that Unnati wrote about dowry or violence is true. Authorities can investigate the veracity of her statements. They claim to have spent Rs 20 lakh on the wedding; can someone ask them where did they get so much money from? They are demanding that we transfer my father's house in her name. A person who is making such demands before even living with me, what will she do later? I do not want to see my family in pain. I could think of no other way than this to save my family. Please help my family get out of this problem.

Mummy, Papa, forgive me please and take care of yourself. Please do not cry as tears in your eyes would trouble me even more. MY LAST WISH - PLEASE LEAVE MY FAMILY MEMBERS.

Avadhesh Yadav"

I know..more men in India than women suicide citing domestic violence as a reason-Violence can be physical, sexual and even emotional.
I wonder why can't the Honorable Humans sitting on seats of power do anything about it.I already know of 2 such men in my social circles. This is extremely sad.
As a human being and as a young woman all i can do is see men as an equal and as a HUMAN for god's sake and advice all those giggling even at the thought men being the victims get some education and empathy.

Definitely male gender has become a forgotten one. We take for granted males being the protector and provider and there is also a false belief males have no emotions. Why do people say, 'Boys don'
t cry or men don't cry.' That way male emotion is repressed and men have to bury their pains. And males won't even express they experienced violence from their wives because when they tell this, people don't believe the men and the men will be ridiculed. All that many males believe is suicide is the only recourse for them as no one believes what the male says.

When a woman tells everyone in the neighborhood that her husband abused her, all the neighbors believe her and they all scold the hapless husband of ill-treating his wife. Why don't they try to find the truth being neutral? When a married couple go to a psychologist, the psychologist believes what the female says and ignores what the male says. Why is this way in the society?

And when a man is arrested with false case, his own old parents and his sister also suffer. Are his mom and sister not women? Why no institution looks into their complaints?

Definitely Govt: has to do something. One hard thing to bear when a woman lodges a false complaint in the court is, she naturally gets the kid's custody. but the kid is deprieved of the father's love. And thus the kid's mental growth is stalled. when the kid becomes adult, how could he/she contribute to the country? Already many males who are supposed to work a lot for their company and contribute to the growth of the country, are wasting a lot of energy in the court. What could be the future of the country if this is the way the system is?

Definitely the judiciary in India needs to be completely revamped. Such provisions as #498A undermine the very idea of justice for all.

the girl child in india is extremely vulnerable, disadvantaged and subject to cultural onslaughts to such an extent.. that I wouldnt mind law favoring the woman...at the expense of few men suffering its misuse... Sooner or later it will level the ground and make things automatically equitable. Every law where relevant should be openly partial to women without feeling the burden o fbeing unfair.. indian society is too screwed up and needs this for normalization!.. the stories cited are by far and few and sometimes contrived!!!

That's ok just be careful when you shag your girlfriend. If she turns out like one of these women she may press charges of rape on the promise of marriage. 😆

I used to think diversity produces differentiation ... but am convinced we are part of the same misery...even in the cities... I would think. btw just as a statistic.. can you tell in number how many such women exist based on legal cases registered.. or how many such wuss men exist based on their complaints!!!
