Chapter 40

Zoya sat in the terrace looking at the nightly sky. Her husband had sprinted out of the house and left in his car even before she could reach him. She had called him many times but he had left his phone in their room. Zoya was worried. "Allah miyan, please Mr. Khan koh apne gusse par kaboo rakne dehna. Jab unne gussa aata hai, toh woh aisa kardete hai joh woh saach mein nahi chathe," she prayed. She was confused. She didn't know what to do to solve the problem between rashid and Asad. Asad was right in his point of view. His anger was justified. But, she understood that rashid was just trying to keep a friend's last wish. "Kya karoon? Kuch toh karna padega, jisse Mr. Khan ka gussa thoda kam hojaye. Lekin kya?" she thought. She looked up at the sky. The sparkling moon, the twinkling stars, and the cool breeze felt soothing. Zoya closed her eyes as she rested her head against the chair's headboard. Everything that had happened in the past year of her life ran through her mind. She smiled remembering the times with Asad and how happy the family used to be. "Allah, mujhe himmat dijiye keh main sabh theek kardo. Main bas apni family ki khushi chathi hoon," she said silently to the Almighty. As she sat there, the wind started to pick up and she felt chilly. Zoya rubbed her hands together trying to warm up. Suddenly, she felt a shawl wrap around her. She opened her eyes to see her husband taking a seat next to her. "Aap? Kaha chale gaye the? Main aapke peeche bhi aayi aur aap ruke nahi. Phone bhi aap yaha chodkar chale gaye the. Kabh se main aapka intezaar karahi ho. Aapko thodi bhi...," Zoya kept on blabbering when he covered her mouth using his hand. "Shhh...mujhe bolne toh do," he said. She realized that she hasn't even given him a chance to speak. "Sorry, boliye," she said. "Mujhe sirf thoda waqt chahiye tha, issliye bahar chala gaya khuli hawa mein. Yaha rehta toh wahi baatein...you know what I mean," he said trying to explain to her. Zoya smiled at his attempt. She didn't want an explanation, just the fact he is trying, that meant a lot. "Main samaj thi hoon," she told him. He looked up at her and saw that she was smiling at him. The smile comforted his soul and made him forget his worries. "Accha, chalo yeh chodo. Main tumare liye khana laaya hoon," he said. Zoya looked at the plate of food on the table in front of them, "nahi Mr. Khan, mujhe bhook nahi hai. Main theek hoon," she said. "Tum theek nahi ho. Meri wajase tumne apne khana beech mein hi chodiya tha," he said guilty. "Aisa kuch nahi, mujhe saach mein bhook nahi hai," she said. "Mujhe kuch nahi suna hai," he said sternly as he took the plate and offered her a spoonful of rice. Zoya knew he wasn't going to let her be so she took the bite. Time passed as Asad fed Zoya the food he had warmed up. Neither of them spoke about what had happened that day. Asad was tired of the issue and he knew talking about it will only make it worse. Zoya was glad to see him being normal after what had happened. Seeing him angry and hurt was making her feel miserable. She didn't want to say anything that will ruin the moment. After eating the food, she just cuddled close next to him as they sat in silence watching the glittering stars.

The next morning bought an unusual routine in Asad and Zoya's room. Asad was in front of the mirror fixing his tie while Zoya was inside the walk in changing room adding some black earrings matching her anarkali. Usually, they are teasing each other and laughter echoed through the walls. But today, silence filled the room. They both didn't know what to say. If they said much, then they knew the topic of rashid would come up. After all, how long were they going to pretend like nothing was wrong. She knew that he wasn't in a situation to listen or understand him. Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard a knock on the bedroom door and saw dilshad enter. "Asad...mujhe tumse kuch baat karni thi," she said. "Ammi...please. Agar aap Abu ki support mein kuch bol ne aaye hai mujhe kuch nahi suna hai," Asad said sternly as he put his black blazer on his navy blue shirt. "Asad...meri baat toh suno, ek baar," dilshad said. He didn't say anything but nodded for her to continue. Zoya made the pretense of checking on breakfast and excused herself as she picked her bag and things for school, and left the room. Dilshad took a seat in front of Asad on his bed. "Asad...main jaanti hoon keh tum apne Abu se naraaz ho. Aur hona bhi chahiye tumara haq hai. Par Asad tumare Abu ne waseem bhai se vaada kiya tha bas issliye woh majboor hogaye hai," dilshad explained. "But Ammi...Abu koh meri fikar nahi hai?" Asad asked like a little kid. "Tum yeh kya bol rahe ho Asad...tume lagtha hai keh tumare Abu koh tumari fikar nahi hai...of course hai. Par unka yakeen hai keh tum unne samjoge. Asad jab kohi majboor hota hai toh usse sirf uske apno se baroosa hota keh woh uska saath denge. Main jaanti hoon keh tume takleef huwi hai par Asad tum apne Abu koh maaf nahi toh at least samaj ne ki kosish karo," dilshad said trying to make her son understand her husband's situation. "Itna asaan nahi hai Ammi. Aap jaanti hai keh jab bhi usse dekhta hoon toh mujhe kitna gussa aata hai...mera khoon...," he staggered unable to speak as his hands formed into a fist. "Asad tumne bahut mushkil se apne kal koh peeche choda hai usse apne aaj par asar karne nahi dehna," dilshad told her son. Asad placed her head in her lap and she slowly caressed his hair lovingly. "Asad...phele tum akele the par tumara saath dehne kehliye aabh Zoya hai. Tumne dekha hai keh kal se kaise chup hogayi hai woh...tumari zindagi se uski bhi zindagi jhodi hai," dilshad said. "Jaanta hoon Ammi...main kya karoon jab mujhe gussa aata hai koh main kuch samaj nahi paata," Asad said. Dilshad smiled, "aabh se tume jitna bhi gussa aaye...aankhe band karke Zoya ka khush chehra yaad karlena, phir inshAllah tumara gussa chale jayega," she said. Asad smiled listening to his mother. "Ammi...aap aur aapke ajeeb tareeke," Asad said remembering how she had made him agree to the wedding a year ago. "Tume maan na toh padega na keh woh hamesha kaam karte hai," dilshad teased as they both chuckled.

Since Nikhat had become pregnant and dilshad had been not doing well with her blood pressure, Zoya had taken most of the house responsibilities on herself. She was telling khala to serve breakfast and also what to make for lunch that day. "khayal rakiye khala keh Ammi kehliye joh khana hai uss mein namak thoda hi ho," Zoya reminded. Khala just smilingly nodded knowing very well how protective Zoya was of the family members. "Aur khala please thode tomatoes aur peppers khaat dijiye. Mujhe Asad keh omelete kehliye chahiye," Zoya said as naseem khala nodded. "Usman...meri madad kardo..yeh sabh table par lagana hai," Zoya called out. "Hum madad karde?" someone asked. Zoya stiffened recognizing the voice. She turned to see Tanveer at the door. "Nahi main kardongi," Zoya said. "Aree Zoya...tum akele kitna sabh samalogi. Hume bhi toh iss ghar ki qatir daari karne doh," Tanveer said lovingly. "Kohi zaroorat nahi hai," Zoya said as she whisked the eggs. "Hum toh sirf tumari madad karna chathe the," Tanveer said, pretending to be sad. "Tum meimaan (guest) ho iss ghar mein Tanveer, meimaan bankar rehna seeko," someone said cunningly and Zoya looked up to see Nikhat at the kitchen entrance. Zoya smiled thankfully at Nikhat. "Tum toh bura maangayi Nikhat, main toh bas help karna chahti thi," Tanveer said acting to be hurt. "Dekho Tanveer...Zoya apna kaam karsakthi hai aur agar usse madad chahiye toh woh ghar keh logo se maang legi. Tume zyada fikar karne ki zaroorat nahi hai," Nikhat stated sarcastically. Tanveer just glared at her and left. "Tum theek ho?" Nikhat asked turning to Zoya. "Jee Bhabhi and thank you," Zoya said. "Anytime...chalo, main tumari help karti ho," Nikhat said. "Aree nahi Bhabhi...aapko aaram karna chahiye, main karlongi," Zoya said. "Aree Zoya, kuch bowls utane se mujhe kuch nahi hoga," Nikhat scolded. Zoya giggled, "theek hai chaliye," she said as they both headed out to the dining hall. As they were arranging the food on the table, "Zoya Asad kaisa hai?" Nikhat asked concerned. Zoya's smiled warded off and worry took over her face. "Paata nahi Bhabhi, jab mujhe lagtha hai keh maine problem thoda theek kiya hai toh agle hi pal sabh bikar jaata hai," she said as tears filled her eyes. "Tum fikar mat karo...sabh theek hojayega. Just remember keh hum sabh hamesha tumare saath hai," Nikhat said pulling Zoya into a hug. Just then, Nikhat saw Asad and dilshad descending the stairs. "Zoya...Asad!" she whispered. They broke apart and she turned to see Asad. He smiled at her and she returned his gesture.

Breakfast seemed to have a better aura than the dinner last night. Though Asad didn't speak to rashid directly, they seemed cordial. Zoya also noticed how his body was less stiffened and his temples were less scrunched than the day before. He wished to talk to her but it wasn't possible with everyone around. After breakfast, Asad caught up with Zoya. They stood facing each other in the driveway. His coffee brown orbs didn't have the anger they held yesterday, they seemed calm and composed. Her hazel eyes were expectant. She had this sigh smile on her lips which he knew was because of him. She had always stood by him in every circumstance. It was wrong for him to hurt her. It wasn't fair that she had to endure his anger. She hasn't done anything wrong then why should she get the results of it. He moved forward and took her soft palms in his. "Zoya...main woh...woh actually...," he mumbled. "please Mr. Khan...sorry mat kahiye. Mujhe accha nahi lagega," she said to him. That made him chuckle. "Thanks Zoya! Thank you for coming into my life," Asad said. Zoya was surprised by his statement, Mr. Khan was being romantic even in a situation like this, she thought happily. Her lips curved into a grin. He moved forward and pecked her lips. "I love you Mr. Khan," she said as she placed a kiss on his cheek. His hands slid around her waist, "office jaane ka mood nahi hai," he said. "Mr. Khan...aapke deals wait karnege lekin mere bacche wait nahi karsakthe," she said as she playfully pushed him away. As she turned to leave, his hold on her wrist halted her. "Aur humare baccho ka kya?" he teased. Zoya's jaw touched the ground. "Mr. Khan!" she chimed. She removed her hand from his and giggling, got into the car and left with the driver. Asad stood watching with a smile on his face.

A week had passed since Tanveer showed up at his house. Her presence didn't frustrate him anymore. And anytime he did get angry, he closed his eyes and followed his mother's suggestion. And the trick worked. He was quite astonished the first time it had happened. But then smiled at himself. Her laugh adorned face seemed to make his anger vanish in seconds. As the days passed, he had also realized that even before he was just angry at the fact that she had the guts to return here. It wasn't pain that had come from seeing his past in front of him. Yes, he was hurt that his father had let her stay here but he had to admit, that may just be his ego. Rashid and him had started speaking again but mostly the topics were kept related to business. The topic of Tanveer was forbidden and it never came up. It was a whole another story with the family. They still felt awkward with Tanveer around. It was like some torn was embedded into their beautiful flower that they cherished as family. Tanveer seemed to be angry. She had come here, rather was sent her, to disrupt the happy family picture that the khan's hung around in society. Especially Asad and Zoya...she was supposed to be the fire that burnt their perfect love. But, her being here made no difference. They were still chuckling and laughing around the house, teasing each other like all was well. She had to do something and soon. If not, her source of income was going to become scarce and she couldn't let that happen. The trick she had tried two days was also a fail. She had poured oil on the stairs so that Zoya would fall and it would be end of that story. But of course Asad had to come save her at the right time. "Arghhh!" yelled Tanveer. "Kuch bhi humare isaab se nahi horaha hai, yeh sabh log koh kohi farak nahi padtha kuch baat se. Hamesha sirf hum saath saath wali family jaise rehte hai...isse thodna toh padega," Tanveer said to herself.

It was a lovely afternoon and Zoya was on her way back from school. She was halfway back home when her phone rang. Seeing the name on the screen, a smile crept up on her lips. "Toh tume finally meri yaad aagayi," she teased. "Salamalaikum bhaji...kaisi hai aap?" Humaira asked from the other side. "Main toh theek ho...tum toh sagai keh baad gayab bhi hogayi," Zoya said playfully. "Bhaji please...aisa kuch nahi hai. Aur waise bhi aap bhi toh apni anniversary keh baad gayab hogayi," Humaira teased. "Aisa kuch nahi hai. woh bas kaam mein aur ghar keh cheeze mein busy thi," Zoya explained. "Jaanti ho bhaji...Haider ne bataya aap bahut busy hai inn dino. Shayad kohi meimaan bhi aaya hua haina?" Humaira said. Zoya had told Haider not tell Humaira about who Tanveer really was. One was because Humaira had exams coming up and Zoya didn't want to worry her. And two because it was not Haider's story to tell. Asad had confided in her about his past and she herself hasn't told anything to Humaira because she knew how hard it would have been for Asad to share his painful past with her. In the future, if circumstances lead to it, then maybe they can tell Humaira. "Ha. Accha woh sabh chod, exams ki tyaari kaisi chal rahi hai?" Zoya asked. "Accha jarahi hi bhaji...Haider bhi help karaha hai," Humaira blurted out but then bit her tongue. "Awww how sweet!" Zoya giggled. "Bhaji please," Humaira said as her cheeks turned tomato red. "Accha bhaji aapko apni gift toh pasand aayi na?" Humaira asked hopefully. "Of course Humaira, album bahut accha tha. Thank you...backpan ki saari yaadein tumne mujhe dehdi," Zoya said. "You are welcome bhaji. Album toh accha laga lekin letter?" Humaira asked. "Kaunsa letter?" Zoya asked. "Aapko letter nahi mila...maine album keh andar raka tha," Humaira said worried. Zoya suddenly recalled that usman had handed her the letter a couple days ago when he had cleaned her room. "Actually humi...main tume baad mein phone karti ho. Mujhe usman ne letter diya tha, main hi padna bhul gayi," Zoya said guiltily. "Kohi baat bhaji...Allah ka lakh lakh shukuar hai keh aapko letter milgaya," Humaira stated. "Aisa kya hai uss letter mein," Zoya said confused. "aap padiye...Allahafiz," Humaira said and ended the call. Zoya dug around her bag and found the letter. "Zoya Farooqui," it read on the label. She remembered that was her mother's last name. She carefully opened the letter and pulled some folded papers and a smaller envelope inside. She opened the papers and started to read:

Meri pyaar beti Zoya,

Main jaanti hoon keh tum shayad mujhe nahi jaanti lekin main tumari Ammi hoon, Zainab. Main tumare saath hamesha rehna chathi thi lekin Allah koh shayad kuch aur manzoor tha. Mujhe bas kuch dino phele paata chala keh mujhe brain tumor hai. Doctor ne bas che meine diya hai mujhe tumare saath jeene kehliye. Yeh che meine mere zindagi keh sabh se haseen pal honge Zoya. Main jaanti ho keh tumare paas mere liye bahut saare sawal honge aur iss chitti keh zariye, main tume jawaab dehna chathi hoon. Bas yehi umeed hai keh tume yeh chitti mil jaye.

Aaj se doh saal phele, eid keh jashn mein main tumari Abu se milli thi. Hume shayad dekhte hi pyaar hogaya tha, balki mujhe toh hohi gaya tha. Phir hum milne lage aur ek dusre koh pasand karliya. Mere toh kohi nahi tha iss duniya mein aur unone kaha keh unka bhi kohi nahi hai. Humare milne keh che meine baad, humne nikkah karliya. Khushiya humare ghar mein rehane lagi thi...sabh theek tha, Allah keh karam se. lekin ek din...tumare Abu koh Bhopal, unka shehar se bhulawa aaya. Unone sirf yeh bola tha keh kuch zaroori kaam hai aur nikal pade.

Unne jaakar ek meine hogaya aur unse kohi baat nahi huwi thi. Aur ussi waqt mein mujhe paata chala keh main ma bane wali thi. Main yeh khushi tumare Abu keh saath baath na chathi thi lekin mujhe toh yeh bhi nahi paata tha keh woh kaha rehte hai. Meri tabeyat bahut bigad ne lagi aur main Bhopal nahi jaa paayi. Phir tum mere zindagi mein aayi. Tume dekhar mujhe ek nayi himmat mili, main tume tumare Abu, Gaffur Ahmed, se milana chathi thi. Main tume lekar Bhopal aagayi. Bahut doond na unne lekin woh nahi mile. Phir ek din, maine unne dekha...unki dusri biwi keh saath.

Jab maine paata kiya toh mujhe saachayi maloom huwi. Tumare Abu ek mashur hotel keh owner keh beta the. Unke Abu ki kuch hi dino phele intekaal (death) hogaya hai. Ek pal toh maan kiya keh main jaakar unn par chilao aur unki biwi koh sabh baata doon. Lekin phir mujhe paata chala keh woh ma bane wali hai. Kaise jaakar baata thi use keh uske shohar ne usse dhoka diya hai. Maine bahut soocha lekin phir faisla kiya keh meri beti koh main khud baada karongi, mujhe kisiki zaroorat nahi hai.

Par shayad Allah koh kuch aur manzoor tha. Ek saal baad, mujhe meri beemari keh baare mein paata chala. Aur mere paas kohi raasta nahi bacha tha. Maine tumare Abu, jinka naam Gaffur Ahmed Siddiqui tha, Gaffur Ahmed nahi, unse milne ka faisla kiya. Bahut bintiyo keh baad unone tume apnaya hai. Main umeed karti hoon keh woh tume ek ma aur baap ka pyaar deh. Mujhe maaf karna beta, main tume chodke nahi jaana chathi hoon, kash kohi aur raasta hota. Hamesha yaad rakna keh main jaha bhi hoon tumare saath hoon. Apni dil ki baat sunna, woh tume Allah keh dekhaye huwe sahi raaste par lekar jayega. Aur yaad rakna keh tumari Ammi tumse hamesha bahut pyaar karti rahegi.

Tumari pyaar Ammi,

Zainab Farooqui

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she tried to finish reading the letter. She couldn't believe it. Thousand questions seemed to be running through her mind at the moment. Why did her father lie to her all these years? Why did he cheat on her mother? Why did he abandon them as a child? Where did Humaira find this letter? Why? She pressed the letter to her heart. "I miss you Ammi, I miss you," she cried. She looked at the other envelope that was with the letter. She opened it to find photographs, a few but important ones. There was one of her Ammi and Abu, presumably from their nikkah. The next couple were when she was born and was a human crawling on all fours. She found one where her mother was holding her right after she was born. She lovingly caressed her hand. What was her mother's fault? How could her father do this to her? She wanted answers, and now! "Shyam bhaiya...Siddiqui hotels chaliye," she said to the driver who just nodded. He was worried to see Zoya crying but it seemed personal and he didn't believe that it was right to intrude. "Main paata karke rahongi Ammi keh Abu ne aap keh saath aisa kyun kiya, mujhe jaana hai keh itne saal mujhe andere mein kyun raka gaya tha," Zoya said as more tears pooled in her eyes.

So truth finally revealed...I know you all have been waiting for it haha. I hope you liked it, looking forward to your comments 😃
