As shown in Ravana serial, Ravana tried to move mount Kailash. To curb Ravan's ego, Lord Shiva pressed Ravan beneath the mountain by applying the weight of just a toe. Ravan was a great scholar. He was a pandit in Sanskrit. On the spot he composed a hymn glorifying Lord Shiva. This hymn is called Shiva Tandava Stotram. I am posting it here.(I liked it so much that I have memorized it completely😊)
It is available in some Internet pages.

WOW!!! This is great!

Well I have no clue how to upload if it's on your hard drive, but if it's on the internet, then right-click on the picture, copy the URL address for that and on the Post Reply box at IF, type [I M G] post the URL here without any spaces[/I M G]

I hope this helps!

Akhl,

Thanks for the stotra. I have been reciting this stotra and shiv stuti by Ravan for many years now but it was completely out of my knowledge that Ravan wrote both these praises of Lord Shiva. While reciting them previously I had skipped out on the last part where it is mentioned that Ravan wrote this poem for Shiva.

It is really surprising to see how a man so intelligent and a stout devotee of Shiva- a God who personifies humility himself, turn into such a devil.

I often wondered why Ravan did many acts against Vedas when he was a master in Vedas. On studying scriptures, I could understand why it was so. Here is the reason: -
Suppose there is a subject, which teaches good conduct. Consider a person, who has complete knowledge of that subject. His knowledge can be of two types: -
1. He knows in and out of that teaching so well that you ask him any question on it, he will answer. But he has not imbibed the teaching. In other words, he has not made the teaching a part of his life.
2. He has made the teaching a part of his life.

Ravan was an expert in Vedas in the first sense as given above. He new very well what Vedas said. He could recite and compose hymns beautifully. But he did not make vedic teachings as part of his life.

Let me give a real-life incident as analogy. I came to know of this incident from TV news. A judge in India was arrasted. His fault was that he used to force his daughter-in-law to bring more and more dowry. If she did not bring, then he tortured her. On investigation, the charge was found to be correct; the judge was really guilty. It was also found that the same judge had given punishment to some others who forcibly took dowry. How could a judge do such an unlawful act? The answer is that he knew well what Indian Penal Code says. He could pass exam on Indian Penal Code. But he did not imbibe the rules of Indian Penal Code in his life.

Next, let me give an analogy from scriptures. The analogy is of Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra became an expert in Vedas. He composed hymns; recited mantras perfectly; performed yajnas. He became such an expert that he was capable of even creating a new heaven. But still Vashisth did not call Vishwamitra as Brahmarshi. This is because Vashisth knew that Vishwamitra had not realized the essence of Vedas. A time came when Vashisth called Vishwamitra as Brahmarshi. By now Vishwamitra had understood the essence of Vedas. When he understood the essence, then the cow was no longer important for him. In fact, all those things for which he wanted to become Brahmarshi were no longer important for him.

I found English translations in a few pages. These translations give correct overall meaning. But they are not very close to the Sanskrit version. I found this by comparing the translations with the stotram in Sanskrit. I wanted a translation that can be as close in meaning to original as possible. Since I could not find any such translation, I thought of translating myself (I know Sanskrit well). Once I find time, I will translate and post it here.
