Chapter 31

The next day was Saturday and Asad and Zoya had slept in since they were awake late last night. She felt the sun's warmth on her eyes and stirred them open. She turned to see the clock on the night table, "Allah miyan, late hogaya," she said as she sat up. She was about to get off the bed when she felt something hold her back. Zoya saw his hand interlocked with hers. She smiled seeing it. She slowly removed her hand, not willing to wake him up and left for the bathroom. Asad woke up to find Zoya in the changing closet. He went to take a shower. Soon, they were both dressed. Asad remembered that he had to tell her what he had found out yesterday. "Zoya, mujhe tum kahi leke chalna hai, chalogi?" he asked. "Ha Mr. Khan lekin jaana kaha hai?" she asked as she fixed her dupatta over her shoulder. "Neeche chalo nashta karne keh baad chalte hai," Asad said and walked out before she could ask any more questions. "Yeh Mr. Khan bhi na, ajeeb hai," she said as she followed him downstairs. After breakfast, Asad and Zoya left for wherever he was taking her. On the way, she kept asking him where they were going but he was really serious. More serious than usual, which puzzled her. Soon, the car came to a halt and Zoya looked out to see the Al-Saba dargah. "Mr. Khan hum dargah aaye hai, aapne baataya kyun nahi?" Zoya asked. "Zoya hum dargah nahi, kabaristan (graveyard) aaye hai," he told her and Zoya looked at him shocked. "Mere saath chalo, main baata hoon," he said and they both exited the car. Asad took Zoya and they both took a seat in the rear dargah stairs. "Zoya, main jaanta hoon keh tum tumare Ammi koh bahut saalon se doond rahi hoon. Kuch dino phele maine kuch investigators koh tumari Ammi keh khoj mein laagaya tha," Asad said. "Aap jaante hai meri Ammi kaha hai?" she asked him. Asad nodded, "chalo mere saath," he said as he held her hand and took her with him. They stopped at a store nearby and bought some flowers.

Minutes later, Asad took her to a grave, "unka naam Zainab Farooqui tha," he said. Zoya collapsed on her knees as tears rolled her cheeks. "Ammi," she said caressing the sand below which her mother rested. He gave the flowers to her and she lay them on top of the grave. Zoya covered her head and raised her hands in prayer, "Allah miyan, maine meri Ammi koh khabhi dekha nahi, main nahi jaanti keh woh kaisi thi. Lekin main aaj at least yeh jaanti hoon keh woh kaha hai. Maine hamesha meri Ammi koh mere aas paas mehsoos kiya hai, shayad issliye woh yehi Bhopal mein thi. Allah miyan, meri Ammi joh janat makfirat bakshiya (grant her peace and a place in heaven)," Zoya prayed sitting on the floor. She opened her eyes to see Asad in prayer next to her. Once he finished, "Mr. Khan, meri Ammi koh kya hua tha? Kya aap kuch bhi jaante hai? aur mere Abu? Unke baare mein kuch paata chala aapko?" Zoya showered him with questions. "Zoya, tumari Ammi ki maut ek hadse mein huwi thi, shayad kohi fire incident tha," Asad said. Zoya felt more tears on her cheeks, "Ammi koh kitni takleef huwi hogi, Allah," she cried. Asad placed his hand around her shoulder and pulled her into a hug. She cried her heart out. Till date, she has been searching for her mother but today, to find out that her mother has been here all these years and yet was so far away from her. And, she had suffered so much, why? She thought. "Tumare Abu keh baare abhi tak toh kuch paata nahi chala. Kohi marriage certificate ya nikkah hua tha yeh toh abhi maloom nahi hua hai lekin main khosish karaha hoon," he said, comforting her. Zoya broke apart, "matlab meri Ammi ka nikkah nahi hua tha?" she asked. "abhi main nahi jaanta Zoya, main doond raha hoon," he told her. "It's ok Mr. Khan, at least main yeh jaanti hoon keh meri Ammi yehi hai, mere liye yehi bahut hai," she said. "apna khayal rakhiye Ammi, main phir aaungi," she said as she left from there, unable to control her sobs. Asad followed her and found her by a tree nearby. "Zoya," he said and she threw herself in his arms. "Thank you Mr. Khan, thank you so much. Aap nahi jaante aapne mere liye kya kiya hai," she talked in between her sobs. Asad held her in his arms, caressing her hair, letting her release the pain that she had buried in her heart for so long. He was lucky that he had always had his family to support him but she had no one. And to find out something so dreadful about her mother had to be hard.

The ride back home was silent. Zoya just looked out the window, as tears spooled through her cheeks. Asad couldn't focus on the road. He didn't know what to tell her. He felt loss of words. His one hand was on the steering wheel, the other reached for her clasped hands in her lap. He caressed them trying to sooth the pain inside her. She took one of her hands and wiped her tears away. She then turned to face him, and gave him a meek smile. Soon, they reached home. Zoya got out and ran inside before Asad could even get off the car. Asad tried to follow her inside, when Dilshad stopped him. "Asad, kya hua Zoya ko? Tumne usse kuch kaha ka? Woh aise rohte huwe chali gayi?" she asked concerned. Asad just wrapped his arms around his mother, not knowing how to tell her. "Asad...kya hua hai? Tum dono theek toh ho?"Dilshad said stroking his hair. Dilshad took him to the couch. He made her sit on the couch and sat on the floor. He placed his head in her lap. "Aaj Zoya koh uski Ammi keh baare mein ek bahut hi bura saach paata chala hai. mujhe samaj nahi aaraha hai keh main usse kya kaho, kaise usse behtar mehsoos kara hoon," he told her. "uske Ammi keh baare mein? Kya paata chala hai?" Dilshad asked. Asad then told her everything, how Zoya has been searching for her mother and what she has found out today. "Tum fikar mat karo Asad, itna baada saach jaane keh baad usse thoda waqt toh lagega na samal ne mein," Dilshad said. "Tume bas uska saath dehna hai, usse yeh ehsaas dilana hai keh tume ho uske saath har dukh baath ne kehliye," she told him. "I will do anything to make her smile Ammi," he said and Dilshad smiled hearing his words. Hours passed, Zoya didn't come out of her room after she had went in. It was dinner time but Zoya hadn't joined them. Asad arranged her food in a tray and walked upstairs. He knocked on the door. There was no response from the other side. He slightly opened and entered the room. It was completely dark. He found the coffee table and placed the tray and then went to turn the lights on. His heart sunk seeing her. She was asleep on the bed, sitting on the bed with her knees bent against her body. She was holding a frame against her heart which he knew held her mother's picture. He sat in front of her. "Kash, main tumare saare dukh tumse door karsaktha hoon," he said as he touched the dry tears on her cheeks. He slowly tried to remove the frame from her hands. "Ammi!" she said as she jerked up from sleep. "Main hoon Zoya," he said. Seeing him, she loosened the grip on the frame. He took it and placed on the night table. "Tume bhook lagi hogi na, main khana laaya hoon," he told her. "Nahi Mr. Khan, mujhe nahi chahiye," she said. "Zoya, ek baat batao? Kya tumare Ammi koh yeh dekhar accha lagega keh unki beti yaha aise andre mein baiti bhooki rahen?" he asked. She looked at him with no answer. "Nahi Zoya, tumari Ammi jaha kahi bhi rahengi unne bas tabh khushi hoti hogi jab woh tume haste huwe dekhengi," Asad explained. "You know Mr. Khan mujhe samaj nahi aaraha hai keh mujhe khush ho ya dukhi. Jis Ammi koh main itne din doond rahi thi woh aaj mujhe mili lekin unki maut itne bayanak hadse se huwi thi yeh jaan kar," she said getting sad. "Please Zoya, phir se rohna mat. Main jaanta hoon keh tume yeh jankar bahut shock laaga hai par iss kehliye tum aise bhooke nahi rehsakthi," he told her. Asad went and got the tray and placed it on the bed. He took the plate and offered her a spoonful of rice. Zoya just pouted. "chalo mo kholo," he said, bringing the spoon closer to her mouth. Zoya opened her mouth and ate the rice. Asad was glad that she has finally eaten something. He fed her some more food and when she was done, "jaake change karlo aur soh jao," he said. Zoya nodded as she got off the bed and went to change. "I just want you to know Zoya keh no matter what main hoon yaha tumare paas, tumare saath," he thought to himself, as he looked at her smiling images on the wall.

"Ammi...Ammi...bachao...Ammi...aag!" she yelled in her sleep waking him up next to her. Asad woke up to see her hands in the air like she was crying for someone. "Zoya utho...Zoya!" he called her. She shot up from sleep, her face was dripping with sweat, and she shivered in fear. "Zoya, kuch nahi hua, main hoon yahan," he told her as he pulled her into a hug. As they broke apart, Asad poured her a glass of water and gave it to her. Zoya took it and gulped it down. "Tum theek toh hona?" he asked worried. "Main shayad waha thi Mr. Khan," she told him. "Matlab? Kaha thi tum?" Asad said confused. "Main shayad meri Ammi keh saath uss hadse mein thi," she stated scared as Asad looked at her shocked. "yeh achanak tum?" Asad said. "Nahi Mr. Khan. Mujhe bachpan se aksar aise bure khwab aate hai. Main hamesha meri Ammi kehliye pukar rehti hoon aur aisa lagtha hai jaise meri sans rukne wali hai," she told him. "Aaj tak mujhe khabhi samaj nahi aaya keh aisa kyun hota hai. Lekin shayad issliye kyun ki meri Ammi keh saath main bhi thi," she said as her eyes began to get wet. "I am sorry Mr. Khan, meri wajase aapko kitne problem horahi hai. Agar uss din main bhi meri Ammi keh saath...," she said when he interrupted her, "Zoya, don't you dare!" he yelled. "Phir khabhi aise bol na mat. Tum jaanti keh tum mere liye kitni important ho. Please Zoya, tumse bahut saari logo ki khushiya jhodi hai, khabhi phir yeh baat sooch na bhi mat," Asad said seizing her face in his hands. She looked up to meet his coffee brown eyes to see the pain she has caused him. "I am sorry Mr. Khan," she said feeling guilty. "sabh theek hojayega Zoya, thoda waqt doh," he said placing a kiss on her forehead. He made her lay on the bed and caressed her hair. Soon, she dozed off into sleep. Asad covered her with the blanket and lay next to her, hoping all bad dreams stayed away from her, forever away!

The next day, her phone rang waking her up from sleep. "Hello Ms. Siddiqui, uthjayiye, subhe hogayi hai," he said. Humaira jolted up from bed. "Haider, tum itni subha?" she asked. "subhe keh aath bajgaye hai, aisa karogi toh tum khan khandaan ki bahu kaise banogi," Haider said in an old lady tone. She giggled on the other side, "shut up! Aur waise bhi aaj Sunday hai, it's allowed," she argued. "mujhe tumse milna hai," he told her. "mujhe bhi lekin hum abhi nahi milsakthe. Aabh toh main college ka bahana bhi nahi bana sakthi," she complained. She heard him chuckle on the other end. "Tum mujh par hasrahe ho, fine! I am not talking to you," she said faking to be angry. "Ok baba, sorry. Par agar tum chaho toh main tumare ghar aakar tumare Ammi Abu se baat pooch saktha hoon," he said. "What? Nahi nahi asia mat karna. Maine toh abhi Bhaji koh bhi nahi baataya hai," Humaira said. "Please tum aisa kuch mat karna," he said. "kyun? Bhaji koh toh baatana hi hai," she said. "Humaira please, agar Bhabhi toh bol diya na, toh woh dhol peet peet kar pure shehar mein dol dengi," Haider said. Humaira giggled, "Hey, meri behen keh baare mein kuch bol na mat," she said. "woh meri Bhabhi hai, main bol saktha hoon," Haider said. "theek hai, bolo," she said. "ek baat poocho?" he said. "Ha bolo," she said. "Mere saath aaj raat dinner pe chalogi?" he asked. She smiled, "mr. Haider khan, are you asking me for a date?" she teased. "May be," he said. "Toh main itni asaani se ha nahi kahongi, tume thodi meinat karni padegi," she told him. "accha?" he said. "Ha, ok lagtha hai Ammi aarahi hai, bye," she said as she cut the line. "Toh Humaira begum, tume meinat chahiye, aabh dekho main kya karta hoon," he thought as he smiled.

Hours later, she heard the doorbell ring downstairs. She ignored it as she assumed someone would answer it and continued to read her book, as she rested on her bed. Minutes later, Razia called her downstairs. "ji Ammi," she said as she descended the stairs. "dekho kyon aaya hai," Razia proudly flaunted. Humaira couldn't see who it was since the person was sitting on the couch with his back facing him. The person stood up and turned to face him, "asalamalaikum Humaira-ji," he told her, with a wink. Her jaw dropped as she looked at him shocked. Razia glared at her, telling her to answer. "walaikum salaam," Humaira greeted. "Haider beta, tum baito! Main tumare liye chai nashta laati hoon," Razia said with her fake loving accent and walked away. No matter how much she disliked Zoya, Razia knew that she had to maintain her "good lady" nature in front of society and its members. Humaira checked to see that Razia was out of sight, "tum? Tum yaha kya karahe ho?" she whispered. "Tumne hi toh kaha tha keh agar tume bahar lejaana hai toh main meinat karna padega toh dekho aagaya main yaha," Haider teased. "kya? Haider agar yaha kisine dekh liya toh pareshaani hojayegi," she said scared about her parents. "kuch nahi hoga, main toh joh pooch ne aaya hoon woh jaankar hi jaunga," he told her. He picked a rose from the flower vase on the table and went on his knees. "Haider kya karahe ho kohi aajayega," Humaira said looking around. "Ms. Humaira main chatha hoon keh tum aaj shaam mere saath bitao, main tume ek date pe lejaana chatha hoon, chalogi?" he asked. Humaira blushed listening to his words. She was about to answer when, "aree beta tum neeche kya karahe ho?" Razia asked. Humaira looked at him shocked. Haider quickly stood up and hid the rose behind him. Humaira happily took the rose and hid it in her dupatta. "Woh aunty...woh mera phone neeche gir gaya tha, bas wahi utaraha tha," he explained. "Accha, aao khalo," Razia said. Humaira peeked out from behind Razia and gave him a flying kiss. Haider smiled at her. Humaira excused herself and went upstairs. "maan na padega mr. Haider aapko, main aaj raat saath baje tyaar rahongi," she typed on her phone and hit sent. "Main saath baje tume pick karlonga," he replied. "Nahi nahi agar tum yaha aaunge toh Ammi Abu koh paata chaljayega," she texted back with a sad smiley. "Main tumari ghali keh corner par wait karonga, tumare liye. P.S. my favorite color is green," his text read. She smiled reading it. "Main jaanti hoon," her reply told him.

Asad has woken up to see his wife sleeping serenely. He got off the bed quietly, making sure not to wake her up. He changed into a pair of pants and a black shirt and went downstairs. Dilshad enquired about Zoya and he told her that she was still asleep. An hour or so later, Asad saw Zoya descending downstairs dressed in a light pink anarkali. She reached the last step and came face to face with him. "Aabh kaisi ho?" he asked. "Main theek hoon Mr. Khan," she said. "Aree Zoya, tum udgayi? Aajao, nashta khalo," Dilshad said as she was clearing the dining table. "jee Ammi," Zoya said. After finishing her breakfast, "Mr. Khan main Ammi se milkar aana chathi hoon," she told him. "Main saath chaltha hoon," he said. "nahi Mr. Khan, main akele jaana chathi hoon. I mean kal sabh itne achanak paata chala toh maine aise react kiya, main chathi hoon keh main jaakar Ammi se theek se baat karo. Itne saal maine sirf unki tasveer se baat ki hai, aaj at least unke hona ka ehsaas toh hoga," she told him. Dilshad caressed her hair, "tum jao beta," she told her. Zoya smiled, "shukriya Ammi," she said. She then looked at him and he nodded in approval. She thanked him too and left. Asad looked at his mother, "uss kehliye yeh zaroori hai Asad, jitna main Zoya koh jaanti hoon woh theek hojayegi. Woh bahut hi samajdaar hai aur himmat wali hai," Dilshad told him. An hour later, Zoya sat at her mother's grave again but this time with a new aura around her. "Asalamalaikum Ammi, main jaanti hoon keh aap mujhe pechaan gayi hogi lekin phir bhi main Zoya hoon, aapki Zoya. Meri zindagi mein kitna kuch hai joh aapko baatana hai. aapko paata hai Ammi kal mere saath joh aaye the woh Mr. Khan, mere shohar. Woh aur unka pura parivaar bahut hi accha hai, mujhe unn sabh se bahut pyaar mila hai Ammi. Bachpan se maine aapko bahut miss kiya hai par jab se main Dilshad Ammi se milli hoon toh aisa lagtha hai keh Allah ne aapki kami unke zariye thodi si kaam ki hai," Zoya said as tears filled her eyes. She quickly wiped them away. "Aap sooch rahi hongi keh main kitna rohti hoon, lekin main nahi rohongi Ammi. Main chathi hoon keh aap jahan bhi hai aapko sukoon mile, aur aap meri fikar mat kijiye, main khush hoon. Mera sapna tha keh chote baccho koh padao aur wahi main pura karahi hoon. Allah ne uski rehmat mujhpar barsaya hai aur main bahut acchi hoon," Zoya said as she smiled. Learning the shocking truth about how her mother died has really hurt her. But, she was Zoya! She has always seen the positive side of life. She has found her mother. The one she has been yearning for years has now been found. She should be thankful. Thankful to the almighty that she has been blessed with Asad in her life who has helped her to reach her mother.

The clock struck seven and she sneaked out of the front gate. She has told her parents that her friend was having a party and that she was picking her up. She walked towards the end of the street to see him waiting by the car. He looked at his wrist, the clock read 7:07. "yeh Humaira kaha rehgayi? Hope keh woh apayegi," he thought. At that moment, he felt her close to him. He turned away and the sight of her in a green anarkali took his breath away. Her hair lay in curls on her left shoulders. She smiled looking at him. He looked handsome in a blue jeans and black jacket with a white shirt underneath. He took her hand in his, "you look beautiful!" he said. "Tum bhi acche lagrahe ho," she told him. They both headed out, hoping to know to each other a little better than before. Later, they sat at a Chinese restaurant with her favorite dishes arranged in front of her. Her heart filled with huge amounts of love knowing that he had remembered. She has always wanted someone to care about the little things. And, she was glad that he did. The lights dimmed and he pulled her to the dance floor. His arms wrapped her slim waist and she shyly placed her hands entwined on his neck. Their eyes interlocked with each other's, they sway to the softly playing piano music. He leaned in closer, "thanks Humaira, for coming into my life," he said. She smiled as she moved forward to leave a peck on his lips. "Are you teasing me?" he said as he leaned in to capture her lips. He started lightly and then pressed harder. When she responded with the same passion, the kiss turned into a deeper one. They broke apart trying to catch some air. She broke apart and tears filled her eyes and she ran out of the restaurant, leaving a shocked Haider behind.

On the other hand, Zoya sat under the stars on the garden bench, waiting for Asad to return from work. She has realized what she held in her heart for him was more than friendship. Her thoughts drifted to the conversation she had with Dilshad a few days ago before she had found out about her mother. "Ammi, ek baat poocho?" she asked as they both sat on the bed. "Ha Zoya, bolo na," Dilshad said. She hesitated not knowing how to ask what was annoying her inside. "Zoya, kohi pareshaani hai?" Dilshad asked, seeing confusion transcribe in Zoya's face. "Nahi Ammi, woh actually, jab aapki Abu se shaadi huwi thi toh aapko kaise paata chala keh aapko unse mohabaat hogayi hai?" Zoya said as Dilshad looked at her surprised. "Sorry Ammi, bahut weird sawaal tha na," Zoya said, feeling awkward. "Ha, thoda weird toh hai," Dilshad said as they both chuckled. "Lekin Zoya, tumare liye jawaab yeh hai keh pyaar aisa ehsaas hai joh shabd mein bahut mushkil se bayaan hota hai. Kuch logo kehliye ek dusre bina jeena pyaar hai, aur kuch logo kehliye ek dusre keh saath na rehna bhi pyaar hai. Pyaar keh azaar rang hai Zoya, tume bas yeh pechaana hai keh tumare liye uss rang ka naam kya hai," Dilshad said. Zoya has confused since then. She thought taking to Dilshad would help but it has only made it worse. What was love for her? Was it what she felt when her husband came close to her? or Was it how her heart filled with content seeing him smile. Or the sting it felt seeing him in pain? Why did she try to hard so he could come out of his past? Why did it bother her so much when he didn't share his feelings with her? The moment that he ran in front of death flashed in front of her eyes and it ran a shiver down her spine. He has done something for her that no one ever had. Even without her ever asking him, he had found out what she has been looking on for years. "Mr. Khan woh ek aise insaan hai jisne bina kohi sawaal ya shart se mujhe apnaya hai, khabhi mujhe woh karne kehliye majboor nahi kiya jiski ijazat mere dil ne nahi diya. Main hi pagal hoon keh itne dino se yeh sabh samaj nahi paayi. Allah miyan, main Mr. Khan se pyaar karti hoon," she said, realization dawning on her. She would have realized this sooner but finding out about her mother and the past has delayed her understanding of her feelings. Or maybe it has strengthened it, she didn't know.

She had to tell him. But what if he didn't feel the same? She thought. "Agar Mr. Khan bhi aisa mehsoos karte toh mujhe baate the na," she said to herself. Zoya, its Mr. Khan...you should know by now that talking is not really his best abilities, her mind retorted. She nodded, yeh bhi hai, she thought. "Tume isse kya Zoya, tume joh kehna hai woh bol doh. Baaki Mr. Khan ki problem hai," she told herself. Today, she will tell him. Then the decision was his, to what his heart told him. Her thoughts were interrupted when she saw him pull into the driveway. She ran up to him as he got off the car. He looked tired. His tie was loosened around his neck and the two buttons of his shirt were undone, his wrinkled coat hung on his left shoulder. "Mr. Khan, aap aagaye. Mujhe aap koh kuch kehna hai," she said excitedly. He smiled at her energy. It was almost past one and here she was jumping in joy, like she had just woken up. "Andar chalkar baat kare," he said. "Jee...aap fresh hojayiye. Main aapke kehliye khana room mein laati hoon," Zoya said happily. Asad nodded and they walked inside. Zoya felt her stomach twirl with butterflies and her heart throb. She warmed up the food and walked upstairs. She saw him sitting on the sofa with his head resting against the back, and eyes closed. Sensing her around him, he opened his eyes and saw her smiling at him. "Tired?" she asked as she placed the food in front of him and took a seat next to him. "Yeah, aaj bahut kaam tha," he said. Should she tell him now, he looked so worn-out. But, she couldn't keep something like this a secret? Now can she? "Mujhe aapse kuch kehna tha," she said. "Ha Zoya bolo, kya hai," he said taking the plate from the tray and started to eat. "Woh actually...woh main, main aapse py...," she was saying when Asad's phone interrupted them. Seeing the name on the screen, "sorry Zoya, I have to answer this," he said apologetically and answered the phone. "Lekin Mr. Khan..," she said but he was busy on the phone. He walked towards the door, covering the phone, "tum sohjao Zoya, I have to deal with this," he said and walked out. "Arghhh...Akdu kahiye keh. Mujhe itni important baat karni thi aur yeh hai keh sirf office aur clients koh paadi hai," she yelled, mad at him for not listening to her.

Will Zoya ever be able to confess to Asad? How is she going to do that with Asad being engrossed in work? May be Asad will tell her his feelings first? What will happen? Keep reading to find out!
