And Her Dreams Seemed Nighmare for Us!
He turned and smiled at me.
I started moving toward him as noting the pair of eyes did not move away from him.
I reached him and we started moving toward the office from the canteen.
I nudged him and said, "Did you see her?"
He shrugged.
"Hah, she couldn't take her eyes off you, Chottu. I think she is in love with you."
He did not say a word.
We moved toward the conference room.
"See, one day sh'd come and engulf you full with those big eyes of hers."
He smiled quietly.
I opened the conference room door and once I saw Sakshi sitting there alone with a thinking mark on her face, my hand slipped from the door, on its own. I blinked at Chottu as the door closed itself again.
"What's it?" he asked.
I clutched my cheeks and winced.
He was puzzled and asked, "What happened to you, Shree?"
"I'm not coming," I said in terror.
He looked inside the room through the glass door and smiled.
"Hah, don't be silly, Shree. I'm here, nah, come. I'll see to it."
He tried to mitigate my fear. But his encouraging words did not do any change in me.
"Why, you too were present that day and were seeing it too, idly," I denounced him right away.
"But we can't stop the unstoppable, right?"
But that was enough for me to follow him behind into the room, without a word.
Sakshi was sitting there with her pen in one hand and was rolling a tress of hair with the other.
My face changed.
She was sitting there one day, exactly with that same pose, when Chottu and I approached her and inquired her eagerly to know what it was, she was thinking about.
She turned toward us ever slowly and started telling a wonderful, unbelievable- in a way impossible dream she had that previous night.
It was impossible till I had to witness it happening to me-in real- as she described it, after two days.
But once heard her explaining dramatically, my first reaction was- I laughed out at her.
"Don't be silly, Sakshi," I mocked her just like Chottu did, outside the room moments ago," Arjun sir?"
"Yes."
"Me, of all the other staff?" I was still laughing.
"Yes!" she was getting angry.
"That's all you've got about him," I advised her.
As it was a very odd thing to happen, it suddenly became the talk of the day and that afternoon, Chottu asked her," Where did this happen?", seriously.
"Not sure. But in an office," she replied as retracing the dream.
To show them that I did not still believe it, I encouraged them, "In front of everyone?"
I suppressed a smile.
Sakshi nodded slowly as if she thought she was worrying me, by telling this all.
She was wrong, I was sure.
To stop me from showing the attitude, Ayesha asked, "It seems, you have prior experience in private then?"
That stopped me for sure and I started glaring at her.
I turned to Sakshi and said, "Come on Sakshi, dreams are nothing but our imaginations. Just our desires. There is nothing in it to take it seriously."
"So you are saying, she has those intentions and her mind imagined it when she slept?"
Ayesha teased me.
I got that she was not going to let it go.
"No," I tried to moderate the situation then, "As she is witnessing it daily, obviously it came as a dream from her subconscious mind. And our ACP is an expert in it too."
I thought it would cushion the blow as everybody smiled at that. But still, Ayesha was not ready to lose the chance.
She asked, "That's all right. Of all the other staff why should she imagine you in that particular scene?"
I was running out of words then and looked Chottu for help.
Ayesha noted this and asked, "So you are trying to say that, he is afraid of Chottu and so you came in that dream?"
I swayed and lifted my hands as in 'Surrender!'
She smiled at that and turned to Sakshi, "Really there is nothing serious in dreams, Sakshi,"
We were stunned to hear this.
"Girls!"- I muttered.
"What Shree?"
"Nothing, nothing really!"
Then slowly we forgot about it.
.~.
On that day of incident, I came to the office in a new fashion shirt.
Everybody turned to me and asked," Where did you get this?"
I proudly replied them that it was the latest hit in the market and said, I chose the fluorescent green in the two pieces shown for me between the tight demands, after the previous mid night.
"And the other one was?"
"Hah, it was the fluorescent pink."
That day we had to go for a raid and we rushed to the spot before any one got a tip.
The officers were already there and the issue was going in full swing.
I noted that one of the staff in that office too had visited the market the previous night as I did. But his was a fluorescent orange, with the same white strips as in my shirt.
Chottu smiled at me knowingly.
We went to work then.
The staff had been informed to switch off their mobiles and that, not to contact anyone by any means until we finished there.
The files were thumbed, the monitors were ruffled, the bureaus were opened to their last racks and we were busy.
Suddenly Sakshi signaled Arjun to see through the window. Arjun without a word left the room. His face was grim. His hand turned to a fist as he came out of the room.
.~.
My mobile buzzed. I saw the number and took it to the corridor to answer. I cut the call and turned.
[I can stop the story here, if it's a thriller- no dears , fortunately, it's just a jovial one so go ahead!]
I could not get a moment what had happened then, as I felt the irritation on my cheek, my hand moved toward the spot in my face.
Arjun was standing there with a confused look on his face.
.~.
Chottu was tending me. As he was wiping the blood from the corner of my mouth, Ayesha stood in one side, not knowing what to do.
There were no mocking marks on her face now except sympathy.
Sakshi approached us hesitantly and stood in silence.
She said apologetically, "Sorry, Shree!"
I raised my eye brow, "What for? For your dream came true?"
I said it lightly and thought, after all, what she could do, the poor girl.
I was ready to forgive her, if not she said the next words then, "No Shree, I was the one who told Arjun that someone was stealthily talking over the phone outside. I didn't think it was you. Your shirt..."
Chottu had stopped wiping the blood in middle and we were staring at her, the fifth column, bewilderingly.
Part-2:
Chottu smiled and went in.
I took a seat much away from her and was watching the scene in silence.
As I guessed it was after all a dream again.
She said, in this one, she saw girls chasing Chottu and hugging him dearly.
I did not hear anything, trust me.
Ayesha entered in and too was undecided whether she could talk here or it would be better if she kept mum.
Once heard the whole story, she could not keep mum anymore.
She asked, "Just Chottu?"
'God, again shes chosen me to tease!'
"Yes,"- came the answer at once.
Chottu smiled at her. The smile soon panned out into a grin and we saw that he was enjoying the scene in day dream now.
I could not take it anymore.
"Chottu, don't deceive that girl," I tried to remind him the girl we saw in the canteen that morning.
Then his grin stopped and he looked at me inquiringly.
"Yes, you can't cheat that innocent girl, who did nothing but lost her heart for you,"
I was saying emotionally.
"Shree?"
"Tell me."
"Didn't you hear her? It's not me, but the other girls who are hugging me."
He corrected and turned to Sakshi.
"But why were you so seriously thinking about it, when we entered?"
She shook her head and said, "Just one thing was nagging me, Chottu. That s why should Ayesha and I were pushing the girls aside to reach you."
We were silent for a moment then Ayesha said, "Right, if we want we can hug you as we wish, freely, but why-" she said in confusion.
"It seems, if you girls see a thing happening in front of you, you'd get jealous and so-"
"It seems, it's not us who are in jealousy here," Ayesha returned.
.~.
From that moment on we were, including Sakshi started teasing Chottu happily.
In fact he was enjoying it the most.
Whenever he showed the slightest glimpse of it on his face, I started reminding him the girl with big eyes.
And twice, we encountered that girl, before the incident day.
.~.
On that incident day, we were working sincerely, suspected nothing.
As usual (?!), we got a murder case and were searching the house from the top of the antennae to the back of the daily calendar for a clue.
We returned to the office with a suspect and inquired him.
As Arjun was bombarding him with questions, we sat outside the questioning room, recoding the event.
.~.
Arjun came out and moved toward his room.
Chottu joined us and we went to the conference room.
"Did you suspect him, in the first place?"
"Hardly. After all he is the close relative of the victim."
"Hah, men are always seeking for chances to move in and once they got, God," Ayesha said grimly.
"Hey, you can't say so, blindly, why, women all are innocents and they'd lose a chance, even if you gave one in their hands?"
Chottu asked hotly.
Suddenly the topic had changed about men and women then.
"Who is kidnapping girls then?"
"Who is cheating men then?"
"Who is snatching the money from her, after eloping?"
"So you people don't kill anybody?"
"Why, you people don't torture anyone?"
The situation went out of hands slowly.
And when the time had come to drop the girls on our way home, they scored off the idea and chose to go by bus.
As they walked out of the campus, we followed them in the car and Chottu said, "All right, men are idiots, Accepted! Now come on, hop in."
The girls turned to face us and were not going to give in.
Sakshi said, "Heard it Ayesha that men are nothing but idiots?"
"That's true enough and we are not riding with idiots, sorry. Come on Sakshi."
Ayesha took her hand and moved away.
"Men are really idiots Chottu. Why are you begging them, in the first place?"
I rebuked him as he moved the car out of the campus.
.~.
We crossed the bridge and was about to enter into a side road when I got a call from Sakshi.
Without a 'Hello', she started, "Shree, here is an emergency," I could feel her tension then.
"Where and what?"
"It seems a bus is on fire and I can see your car, see this way, to the left. Can you see the bus?"
I looked and saw people were running clumsily hither and thither.
I informed Chottu and we got out of the car.
Chottu rushed toward the bus as I called the fire station.
I followed him and tried to disperse the crowd. It seemed the crowd was going nowhere, but running around the bus. I saw a red shirt on either side of the bus.
Chottu went to the bus and reached the emergency exit.
He saw that the passengers were trying to break it from inside.
I reached the bus and saw that the driver was not in his seat.
The fire was moving from the engine to the seats and it had reached the front door.
I got that it was a single door bus and the fire was eagerly going toward the diesel tank.
Chottu saw the driver then, struggling with the emergency exit door from outside.
With a single stroke he obviated the man from the door and smashed the door from its hinges.
He put the door as a sliding bridge between the ground and the bus and started dragging the passengers from the bus as though they were weightless, mere vegetable bags. He did not stop a moment to shake the sweat drops running down from his forehead.
I ran to the car, took the extinguisher bottle and returned.
After 30 seconds the fire came under control. The driver came running to me with a sack from somewhere. We got in through the driver's seat and covered the sack on the engine up to its ears then patted softly its back. Without a lullaby the fire drifted into sleep.
The next minute -we had stubbed its evil tongues and before I could take a relieving-?!?!?!
Someone stumbled on me and without a sorry, went on her deed. I turned and saw that everyone- SCORE IT OFF now and here- GIRLS were running toward Chottu and fell on him deliberately.
My eyeballs literally popped out seeing the scene.
'What the devil?'
Then I remembered that it was a women's college bus.
Suddenly I saw Sakshi and Ayesha in the crowd- No, Not in any crowd, just the one Chottu had struck in with- and were trying their way toward him. Once got a chance they hugged him and Sakshi kissed him to appreciate.
I came to know that I was standing there, alone as the sirens reached there.
.~.
Eventually, the trio remembered me and turned to me.
I could say they were still excited.
Chottu approached me with the girls on his either sides.
Ayesha waved a hand before me to shatter the trance. But I was not in trance, just they were in no mood to consider it.
I let it go as I did to the other matters...
Chottu grinned at me and I heard myself say,
"Not fair!"
"Why?"- Ayesha.
"I too tried my butt off to stub the fire," I indicated.
"He s saved lives!" -she exclaimed.
"He is right, Ayesha. He too has saved lives," Sakshi nodded.
"But he got his reward," I complained.
Sakshi smiled and kissed me.
I did not smile.
"No need. Didn't even come in the dream," I wiped the kiss, "Go away," I turned and saw Arjun was standing there.
"Sir," I was bit surprised.
"What Shree, today too got one on the cheek?"
He teased me with a smile.
I rubbed my cheek again and said, "Yes sir, I don't usually refuse whatever is given to me dearly."
I smiled and that side of my cheek ached on the thought of that day.
