HEALING SHUROO 18.9
I had decided not to talk to anyone that day except Arjun, since he had no hand in this matter.
I was angry on everybody around.
"Shree," Sakshi tried to cajole me.
"----"
"Are you angry still?"
'Still?' It seems as though it's happened a year before. Just yesterday evening! And in the morning she is asking still! 'Come and ask now, and forget me while dreaming.'
I was cursing silently.
"Just leave him, Sakshi. Too much scene," Ayesha commented.
I glared at her.
"Who refused to come with the idiots and then who came to ride with, after-"
"Uh-hah, who came to kiss the idiots, ask like this. That's correct Shree," Ayesha cut me in.
"Each idiot got one," Sakshi tried to compromise.
"Yes," I gave in.
But Chottu, "AFTER ALL, you had to call the idiots, ,"
"If you have none, but the idiots to call-"
"Guys, we are in ETF and it's our duty," Sakshi reminded our position, "No matter, who called whom,"
We went silent and started behaving like sincere citizens of the Indian soil, "By any name," She finished.
.~.
Ayesha was marking something on a map. Sakshi entered in and gave us an evil smile. I could see a devil standing behind that.
"What, a dream again?"- I screamed in terror.
She nodded in a conspire manner.
"Oh, God! I'm not in this game!" I declared.
"No, you are not!"
She dropped the ice cream rain over my head then.
I grinned at once and suddenly got interested in.
"Who is this time?" I asked with twinkles.
She saw Ayesha significantly, who was still working with the map seriously and with the other hand was reveling in with a bowl of chips.
The completely happy person to know the news was me.
Sakshi smiled and said, "I saw Ayesha eating brinjal pulav," she slowly opened the Pandora box then.
"A what?"
Ayesha threw the map on the table and stood up in astonishment.
Chottu, who was trying to pick up a chips piece from the bowl, stopped short as she stood up and upset the bowl. His hand was still in mid-air.
We could see that she was stunned to the core as the bowl was still wailing on the floor somewhere under the table.
.~.
The whole day she did not speak with Sakshi.
Days passed and in the morning of the incident, a week later to be exact, Ayesha came out of her flat and locked the door behind. She was going to the office then.
She put the key in her bag and moved toward the elevator as Riva's mother approached her hesitantly.
"Hi, Aunty!" she wished and smiled at her.
"Aish, sorry, but I need a favor,"
"Yes aunty, tell me,"
"Riva's forgotten her lunch box and her father is not available now. If you please, can you give it to her on your way to the office?"
"Sure, give it to me, Aunty."
She extended two boxes then.
"Why, hadn't she had her breakfast too?"
Ayesha wondered at seeing the boxes.
"No, no. I made brinjal pulav for her and her friends too asked me once. The other one is for them."
"Right."
She put the boxes in her bag and moved away.
"Bye, Aunty!"
"Sorry,"
"No problem, aunty."
She went to the school.
Riva came running toward her and smiled at her apologetically.
"Sorry, dhi,"
"It's ok, Rivu. You know, today-"
She opened her bag as the mobile in her hand rang.
She looked at the display and smiled.
She put it to her ear and extended her bag to Riva.
"Haan, tell me."
Riva said, "Got to go, bye dhi, thanks."
Ayesha smiled, closed the bag and moved toward the school gates as talking over the phone.
.~.
Lunch Time!
Ayesha placed her bag on the lunch table as we sat in our seats.
It was the arrangement of Sakshi actually. She had insisted us to bring lunch at least once in a week. She made her point well that we should concentrate on our health. We had to yield at last and that day was the day to bring lunch with us, and we did.
But against the grain, Sakshi was silent, when we came to the lunch table that we had arranged for the occasion.
She was contemplating something, we could say.
Ayesha opened her bag and put the lunch box before her.
She noted Sakshi and raised an eyebrow at me with a smile.
I shrugged and took my box out.
Ayesha opened her box and was just staring at it.
Suddenly Sakshi shouted, "Wow, brinjal pulav!!"
We looked the scene in shock, without a word.
Ayesha shook her head as she suspected something and looked into her bag in a rush.
She found one more box there and opened it madly.
Sakshi this time screamed, "Two boxes of brinjal pulav!!"
"I thought, you wouldn't like brinjal."
"Me too," Ayesha said numbly, once found her voice.
Sakshi slowly asked, "Then how could you with two boxes of..."
Her voice trailed off as Ayesha pungently turned to her.
She heard herself was explaining the morning scene to everyone around and she said, "And when I was about to give her the boxes, one phone call-" she scorched Sakshi with her look and said, "YOU CALLED," she finished and stared at her.
"Did she?" I inquired unknowingly.
Ayesha was silent; I could say she was not an accepter of defeat easily.
She looked at me questioningly and I got the clue, but could not give her the news easily.
I slowly opened my box and she said with a twinkle in her eyes, "Chapatti!"
I shook my head in negative and said, "Stuffed with brinjal," I looked at her, "Sorry Ayesha, she called my mother this morning," I said weakly.
She threw an inquiring look at Chottu, "She visited my mother yesterday evening with a kg of brinjal," Chottu opened the box that had brinjal gothsu with rice.
"Did she?" Ayesha asked, this time I could see her lips twitching.
She was seeing Sakshi as though she was a mere devil.
We heard footsteps behind.
'Thank God!'
Arjun entered in as though a guardian angel to Sakshi.
He said, "I thought, I mean, I didn't like to go out for lunch today," he added, "Alone."
We saw that he was missing home-food.
Sakshi came to life at once and said cheerfully, "Take my box, Arjun."
She moved her still unopened box toward him.
He raised an eyebrow.
"Ayesha has two boxes, today. You take it."
He nodded and opened the box with a smile.
The sweet smell of coconut rice and potato curry with peanut flaunted its way through all the nostrils around.
"Do you like coconut rice?"
She inquired further.
"Thanks," he said with a smile.
Then suddenly Sakshi felt the staring faces on her.
She looked Ayesha apologetically and cringed with her eyes.
'Please, please...'
Ayesha without a word nodded at her.
I moved my box to Sakshi, who took a chapatti and tore it into four pieces then placed it in other four lunch box lids.
Arjun said, "Oh, sharing system," He moved the now his box toward the centre of the table.
Once the sharing was over, Ayesha saw that she was swarmed up with nothing but brinjals.
Once the coconut rice was over from her plate, she looked everybody helplessly.
She could not decide between the gothsu and the stuffed chapatti she should try first.
Made her mind to try the chapatti first she shook the brinjal from the piece of chapatti and looked inside. The adamant seeds of brinjal were still there and smiling at her from inside.
She put it aside and moved to the pulav which seemed harmless than the chapatti. She moved the brinjal and found some soft rice in the box.
She slowly put the rice in her mouth and closed her eyes tight.
She munched and thought, Not bad.'
She took another mouthful and the light came back to her eyes again.
Chottu signaled me to see her.
She smiled at me and took the piece of chapatti in hand. She stuffed it again with the brinjal she shook it from and had it.
She raised an eyebrow to appreciate it. Then took the brinjal gothsu and tasted it.
"Nice, nah?"
Sakshi asked her and smiled.
Ayesha nodded and was in the ecstasy of brinjal pulav.
Then Sakshi signaled to see Arjun who was reveling in the royal favor of homemade dishes.
