After Tejawat's death, Rudra and Parvati shifted to Lucknow permanently. They realized that Birpur and Chandangarh had nothing left for them now. Everything that mattered to them was in Lucknow. With a newfound sense of freedom, the young couple looked forward to everyday as a new adventure. It had only been two weeks, but things were starting to look up.
Rudra remained in charge of V.K. Singh's security detail. The money earned from there allowed him to by a small home with enough room for his now growing family. Their new home was not too far from Aman and Pia, as he knew Paro would want to be near them as much as possible. Therefore, they stayed close by. Rudra's rough demeanor had lessened significantly. Sure, he was still a jallad at times. But his heart had completely softened ever since he had realized he was going to become a father.
Parvati, on the other hand, was enjoying the pregnancy. She was taking each day one step at a time. Well, small steps since Rudra's overprotectiveness barely allowed her to walk to the kitchen without him worrying over her like an old aunty! However, she understood the care and concern that was expressed in each thing he did, and it only made her love for him deepen...if that was even possible!
Third month of pregnancy...
Parvati sat on the edge of the bed, pouting. Rudra was kneeling in front of her. In his hand was a plate of imli with salt on the side. However, it remained untouched. He realized that Paro was still upset with him.
"Look," he said softly. "I brought you imli. Pia made it specially for you."
Paro continued to pout.
"Stop this angry behavior. You don't need to be this angry. I'm just following doctor's orders."
Parvati continued to remain silent. Rudra ran a hand through his hair and sighed. His wife was so stubborn at times, even more so now that she was pregnant. Her hormones had gone into overdrive, causing her to be extra emotional over such little things. Last week, she cried because he had to go to work, something he had been doing almost everyday. Now, she was upset because he wouldn't bring jalebis for her, as she had had too many sweets which was not good for her. Last time she had eaten too many sweets, her stomach began paining. It nearly scared the life out of Rudra. However, everything turned out fine, but the doctor told her that there was a strict limitation on sweets from now on.
Trying to find some way to appease her, Rudra had called Aman, who had experienced similar mood swings when Pia was pregnant. Imli became the compromise. Now, Rudra was sitting on his knees with a plate of it in his hands, and his wife was refusing to accept his feeble attempts to pacify her.
Rudra watched her attention turn to her stomach, which was beginning to fill. Paro's hands caressed her stomach gently, as if trying to find comfort in her child. He watched the upmost tenderness reflect in her eyes as he stared down at her stomach. The slight plumpness to it was only visible when the dupatta was removed, as it was at this moment. As he watched her, an idea came to his mind. Rudra suddenly got up and sat on the bed in front of her. He placed the plate on her lap and put his hand on her stomach, surprising Paro. He caressed it with his thumb and then leaned down closer.
In a voice loud enough for Paro to hear, he addressed their child, "Your maa-sa seems to pay more attention to you. You will help your bapu-sa, right? Will you tell your maa-sa that I am sorry, but I have to follow doctor's orders? Will you tell her to forgive me? She will listen to you. After all, she loves you a lot."
At this point, the tears in Paro's eyes streamed down her cheeks. A smile broke on her lips as Rudra glanced up at her and gave a small smile. Somehow, he knew that that would do the trick. In that smile, Rudra knew he had been forgiven. Parvati wiped her tears and eagerly began eating the imli. As she closed her eyes and scrunched her nose at the tangy flavor, Rudra couldn't help but smile as he felt himself enjoying the small moments in life such as these.
Fifth month of pregnancy...
Rudra and Parvati sat in the office of Doctor Kapoor, who was updating them on Paro's health. Being a girl from a small village, the modern contraptions that the doctors tested her with was quite nerve-racking. Thankfully, Rudra was there with her every step of the way, assuring her that everything was okay and if the doctors did anything to hurt her he would deal with them personally. The regular check-ups were something Rudra took very seriously. He made sure that he accompanied his wife to every one of them. He wanted to know how everything was progressing and if there were any concerns. Little did they know that they were going to get the surprise of a lifetime.
Doctor Kapoor had done the usual blood work and listened to Paro's heart. As the results came back, the doctor found something that not only confused her, but surprised her. She failed to hide this on her face. As Rudra caught a glimpse of these expressions, he instantly became concerned. Before he had a chance to ask what was wrong, Doctor Kapoor took Parvati into a separate room in order to do one more test. This not only bothered Rudra, but also Paro. She began worrying that something may be wrong with her child. She sent a quick prayer to Bholenath that everything would be okay.
After a few minutes, Parvati came back into the office where Rudra was sitting. He frantically asked her what had happened and she could only answer that she didn't know as the doctor hadn't stated anything. Both felt a sudden uneasiness seep into them as they waited for the doctor to return. Although it was only ten minutes, it felt like hours. Doctor Kapoor finally returned to the office with a small envelope in her hand. She saw the couple holding hands in front of her question her silently. The tension was racking up and she knew she couldn't make them wait any longer.
"There is nothing to worry about," Doctor Kapoor stated outright. "I wanted to do a quick sonography to check on something that popped up on Mrs. Ranawat's results. I was surprised and also confused as to why I didn't notice it in the first sonography that we had done."
"Is everything okay?" Paro asked. "I mean...is something wrong?"
"Oh no! Everything is perfectly fine. Nothing to worry about. The babies are developing normally, and-."
Doctor Kapoor paused as the couple caught on to the key word. Parvati's eyes widened to the size of saucers. Rudra's jaw dropped to the floor. She didn't blink, while he needed to blink to understand if he had heard the doctor correctly. Rudra and Paro both looked at each other before looking back at the doctor.
In unison, they spoke, "Babies?"
Doctor Kapoor nodded and handed them the envelope. Rudra took it with slightly numb fingers and opened it. In it was a picture of the babies. Parvati looked at the pictures and couldn't help but feel completely blessed. There were people who struggled to have a single child, and she was going to have two. The black-and-white images clearly showed signs of two lives within Paro. Rudra's fingers traced the image as he felt himself choke up with emotion.
"Congratulations," Doctor Kapoor said. "You're going to have twins!"
Seventh month of pregnancy...
Sleep eluded Rudra. It had been since he had come to know that he was going to be the father of twins. After the initial shock had worn off, he was filled with a sense of uneasiness. Rudra took extra precautions when it came to Paro's health now. It was almost to a point where he was suffocating her with his constant concerns, but he just couldn't help it. The idea of two children was terrifying, let alone one. As Paro's delivery date neared, he became more nervous. However, this was something he didn't let her know. She was already dealing with so much, he didn't wish to add to her worries.
What he didn't know was the Parvati already sensed his worries. Even now, as he lay next to her in bed, she would feel that he hadn't fallen asleep. She had seen the sudden change in his behavior since the news of their additional bundle of joy. Although she could see he was happy, Paro could sense an underlying dilemma he was struggling with and for some reason he didn't want to tell her. Having enough of this, she turned around slowly to face him, careful of her large tummy.
Feeling the bed shift, Rudra's gaze shot to his wife. To his surprise, she was awake and staring at him with her large, hazel eyes. He turned and laid on his side, propping is head up his hand.
"Paro," he said concerned. "You're awake? Are you okay?"
"I should be asking you that," she responded. "You've been acting differently. What is bothering you?"
Rudra looked down guiltily. Obviously she knew when something was wrong. She had the ability to read him like a book. He found himself looking back at her and expressing the worries he felt in his heart.
"I don't know...I'm worried about our children. I don't know if I'm going to be a good father or not. I lost my bapu-sa when I was young. I don't even know how to act like a father. What if I mess up and our children end up hating me?"
The fact that he had been feeling this way broke Paro's heart. However, she could understand where his fears were rooted from. His eyes filled with an unspoken pain and sadness. She could see that Rudra was truly worried about failing as a father. It's hard to believe that he used to be a man that never once thought about love, let alone a family. And now, he was excited yet nervous about having one. It was enough to cause a lump in her throat. Right now, Paro knew that she was going to help him understand. She was going to have to put his doubts to rest.
Paro caressed his cheeks softly, "Our children will never hate you. They will love you. You will be a good bapu-sa because, despite everything, you have so much love you are ready to give them."
"I'm scared. I don't want to hurt them. I don't want to mess up."
"To be honest, I am scared too. You're not just going to become a bapu-sa. I'm going to be a maa-sa. I worry about whether or not I will be good mother to them, but I know that everything will be okay."
"How?" he asked. "How are you so sure that everything will turn out okay?"
"Because I have you by my side. Each and every step of the way."
The ease with which she had spoken calmed Rudra greatly. He felt himself relax as Paro, as usual, managed to clear his doubts and lessen his tensions. Before he could say anything else, Paro winced and shot a hand to her stomach. Rudra sat up as though he were on fire.
"What happened?" he asked worriedly. "What's wrong? The babies-."
"Rudra," she said as she took a few deep breaths.
He watched her distressed face break into a smile as her hand rested on her stomach. He sat confused as to what was going on, but admired the way his wife held her stomach so preciously. He didn't notice her guide his hand to her stomach until he felt a nudge beneath his hand. He paused and looked at her stomach, focusing on it. There was a pause before he felt the nudge again. As Paro rested her hand on top of his, Rudra felt himself choking on his emotions. With a tender smile, he kissed her forehead softly before turning his attention back to the feeling of his children beneath his fingertips. He had just felt the first signs of life in Paro.
Ninth month-Delivery day
Pia was outside the hospital room with Abhi in her arms, pacing frantically. Her gazed continuously went back to the doors at the end of the hall, waiting for the one person that was needed at this hour. The nurse had forbidden her from entering the room with Paro, and now she was forced to stand outside and wait like a madman, wondering what was going on inside. Abhi, who could sense his mother's discomfort and worry, patted her cheeks softly in an attempt to calm her down. It appeared that, even at being almost two, he knew he would be the calm one amongst them.
Suddenly, the doors burst open. Pia found Rudra running towards her with Aman tailing behind. They were both sweating and out of breath. Rudra was the picture of a completely worried husband and soon-to-be father. His eyes questioned Pia as to where his wife was.
"They just took her in a few minutes ago," she answered. "They wouldn't let me go in. So, I don't know how she is."
Rudra's eyes shot to the door that was the barrier between him and his family. As he tried to go in he found Pia holding him back.
"You can't go in there," she said. "Not yet."
Aman spoke up, "You won't be able to handle it."
"Yes I can," Rudra said. "You remember I have seen worse things."
"Parvati is giving birth. You have never seen anything worse. Trust me. There is a lot of blood and screaming. You won't be able to handle seeing her pain. You will want to kill someone."
Sensing that Aman was right, Rudra roughly nodded and began pacing in front of the room, waiting for the doctor to come out and give him some news. Aman and Pia sat down in the chairs in the hallway and watched Rudra prowl like an angry lion.
An hour went by. Then two hours. There was still now news on Paro's condition. Nurses came running in and out of the room, and in the split second the door opened, Rudra could hear Paro either hissing or screaming in pain. He realized that it was good that he didn't go into the room. There would have been a pile of dead nurses in their if he had gone. However, being outside and not knowing what was happening inside was no less better.
Rudra couldn't believe that the one day V.K. Singh called him for some work, Parvati had gone into labor. Thankfully, Pia and Aman were there with Paro during his absence. Aman had stepped in as the calm one and drove the two of them to the hospital before driving like a madman to come and get him to bring him to the hospital. Rudra could never explain how grateful he was to have Aman and Pia around, but this was just one more think that made him respect them in his eyes.
As the moment of arrival became closer, Rudra began feeling more restless. He is going to be a father soon. His family was about to get just a little bit bigger. Despite his conversation with Paro, he was still nervous about becoming a bapu-sa. However, knowing that she was by his side, he felt a sense of relief. He was going to have to learn one step at a time, and with her supporting him, Rudra knew that this new part of their lives was going to be unforgettable.
An hour later, Doctor Kapoor came out of the delivery room with a smile on her face. Rudra rushed up to her with an anxious look on his face. Aman and Pia stood behind him, holding each other's hand while they reflected Rudra's expression on their faces.
Doctor Kapoor smiled and said, "Congratulations, Mr. Ranawat. You are the father of two sons."
Rudra grinned as he felt warmth radiate through his body, "And Paro?"
"She's resting. The infants have been cleaned up and are resting with her. You may go in and see her, but one at a time please. Mrs. Ranawat is quite worn out."
There was no debate or arguing. Rudra went in first. He slowed his steps and put his hand to the door. He paused, realizing that just beyond the door was his new life. Was he ready for it? A part of him wondered if he was ready for what waited for him just beyond this white door. He didn't know why, but he turned to look at Aman and Pia, as if trying to seek an answer from them. Aman had his arm around Pia, who was holding Abhimanyu close to her. They were staring back at him with gentle smiles of their faces. Rudra smiled back, realizing that the image he saw before him was something he was going to have. Is that what his future would look like? He knew that there was only one way to find out. Rudra took a deep breath, pushed the door open and stepped in.
He slowly walked towards the bed. The image in front of him took his breath away. Parvati was laying on the bed, patting their two sleeping sons that were wrapped in a blanket next to her. She looked exhausted as beads of sweat were still visible on her forehead. But she didn't dare fall asleep. Her half-open eyes looked adoringly at her two children. Her two sons.
Seeing that there were no room left on the bed, Rudra grabbed the rolling stool and wheeled it near the bed. His gaze met Paro's momentarily before they both turned their attention to their sons. Rudra found himself amazed by their tininess. He couldn't believe he had spent all these months talking to these two small bundles. That earlier fear and anxiety vanished the minute he laid his eyes on them. His sons. As he gently stroked one of his sons, he's eyes widened in surprise as he watched the infant barely wrapped his entire hand around his pinky finger. Rudra could felt his heart melt.
He stood up and kissed Paro's forehead softly.
"You have your two sons," he said amused. "Just like you wanted."
Paro gently touched his cheek, "You're a bapu-sa. And...I'm a maa-sa."
It seemed that she was still stunned by the transformation. Rudra kissed her palm and nodded, still trying to let the new status sink in. She turned her attention to her sons that were still sleeping peacefully.
"Dhruv," she said. "I want one to be named Dhruv."
"Dhruv Pratap Ranawat," Rudra liked the sound of it. "Done. And our other son?"
"You name him. After all, he seems attached to you already."
Rudra looked down at the child holding his finger and thought long and hard before a name finally popped into his head, "Karthik."
Parvati smiled, "Karthik?"
He nodded, "Karthik Pratap Ranawat."
"Dhruv and Karthik. Perfect."
Rudra leaned down and softly kissed his two sons' foreheads. He looked at Paro. The love he felt for her seemed to overflow at this moment. If someone had told him years ago that he would be sitting in a hospital, as a married man, with two children, he would have spat at the idea. He would've pitied his state back then. He would have done whatever he could in order to prevent a situation like that from happening. Now, Rudra couldn't imagine another life for himself. When he imagines his future, he only sees the imagine before him. This was his world in front of him. Him. Paro. Dhruv. Karthik.
Rudra smiled tenderly at the three people who meant everything to him. This was perfection. And now, he only had one wish: that he would be blessed enough to have Parvati, the woman who had given him everything, as his wife not just for the remainder of this lifetime, but for every lifetime to come.
