Work starts on Shah Rukh Khan's Sci Fi film

Director Shirish Kunder has started work on a Sci Fi film that will feature Shah Rukh Khan in the lead, most probably as a super hero.

Director Shirish Kunder has started work on a Sci Fi film that will feature Shah Rukh Khan in the lead, most probably as a super hero.

When asked how it felt to be directing Khan, Kunder said, "He is the coolest star I have worked with so far."

Kunder made his directorial debut with the musical Janeman (2006) featuring Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Akshay Kumar in the lead. The film, whose production was marred by differences between Salman and Kunder, had a long production run and eventually bombed at the box office.

Kunder is the husband of Shah Rukh Khan's business partner, choreographer Farah Khan. He has earlier edited two films for Khan's home productions, Red Chillies Entertainment - Main Hoon Naa (2004) and Om Shanti Om. The latter is in post production.

With Hrithik having already made his mark as India's first super hero with Krrish , and Abhishek Bachchan firmly sitting in the superheroes bandwagon with the in production Goldie Behl's Drona, there is an urgency for Shah Rukh Khan to catch up.

SRK may easily do that because he has one big advantage - He owns a state-of-the-art VFX studio with a team of 40 world class professionals, a combination that is probably the best in the country.

Recently it was reported that entertainment colossus Walt Disney Pictures is set to invest a whopping $30 million in the studio.

In the past SRK's VFX team has worked on Main Hoon Na, Paheli and more recently, Don

SRK's Net Attitude

ShahRukh Khan is extremely internet savvy and carries his laptop wherever he goes.

But a birdie near his Bandra abode tells us that SRK has two e-mail IDs — one is an old Hotmail account that he uses for professional reasons, while the other is a Mac account purely for personal contacts.

Apparently, SRK is very protective about this ID and only gives it out to friends and close acquaintances.

So where does that leave his zillions of fans?

Sorry dahlings, but you'll just have to make do with his personal website!

Srk's Got A New Look

Not only has King Khan lost oodles of weight, he's got a new, messy haircut too!

Just what's happening to all our stars! After Kareena Kapoor, John Abraham and several other actors, ShahRukh Khan too seems to be aiming for size 0.

King Khan had already lost most of the flab for his character in 'Don', but now it seems he is losing even more weight, add to that his new messy haircut (which, we must admit, makes him look quite yummy!).

Well, new look or not, the actor has certainly not lost his star appeal abroad. Khan fever swept the UK as thousands of dedicated fans queued for many hours to get a glimpse and chance to meet their favourite star at the fourth Asian Lifestyle Show in Olympia, London.
Not even the UK's biggest sports weekend, Wimbledon tennis finals, the British F1 Grand Prix, Tour de France, live earth concert and all the road closures around London, could put people off coming to see the King Khan.

His fans got the opportunity to get up close and personal as he signed autographs, appeared on the two huge stages at the venue, charmed and inter-acted with the crowds, enacted his favourite film dialogues from his recent blockbuster 'DON', a scene from 'Devdas', and even sung a few lines from his all time favourite movie 'Dilwale Dulhania...' .

Any doubts now as to why he's still Bollywood's Baadshah!

"I'm crazy about SRK"

7 Jul 2007, 0000 hrs IST

Ashok Chaterjee, TIMES NEWS NETWORK, TNN

The latest entrant to make it to the controversy list, says that any publicity is good publicity.
Sanah Khan shares one similarity with the ' Khan'daan camp. Like our Salman (macho) Khan, this lissome lady is quick to enlist her name on the controversy list. Courtesy her Amul Macho ad on the small screen, which critics point out, borders on the banal.

But Sanah is quick to defend herself. "It is a clean ad. People are unnecessarily making heavy weather of it. At the best you can call it sexy or funny." Surely she has to realise that the reactions to the advertisement in the form of street protests, were far from funny. "I was a little taken aback with the initial reactions. But even negative publicity is good publicity," the 20-year-old chuckles. This is no andar ki baat that she also has an item number in Meri Doli Tere Angna to her credit.

Having done nearly 20 commercials, this girl from Mumbai is only happy to have made an appearance on television with the item song. But ask her if item numbers are a stepping stone to stardom and she answers, "Not at all. They add glamour to the script and I have no problems essaying such numbers if they are justified with the script. But if the songs are there just to grab attention and lack proper masala, then they are a waste."

Sanah also adds, "I'm a model and I want to remain one till I make it big in films. TV is not my cup of tea. I don't like serials and soap operas."

Having sent her message across, she continues that Bollywood will be her Next Big Stop. "I will be the next Khan to shine on silver screen after the male Khans, who are ruling Bollywood at present." For the present , Sanah is "doing films down South" , though she "cannot talk much about them."

What she cannot stop talking about though is how her parents supported her when she decided to join the modelling bandwagon after school. "My parents never pushed me to study more. And they have been supportive of my career moves, even though a few of the relatives had initially objected to my decision."

Wanting to make a mark in Bollywood, is Sanah aware of the casting couch there, we ask? "I haven't faced something like that till now, though I'm very much aware of it and am cautious about the same," she giggles. The youngster can hardly contain her excitement when questioned about an ad for a fairness cream with King Khan.
"I am a great fan of his and it was great working with him. I just managed to say hello to him and get a picture clicked with him," Sanah adds with a smile as she continues to rave about her passion. "I'm so crazy about SRK that I even tried to commit suicide by jumping off our building, when I was in the seventh standard. It happened after my mother was about to throw away all the SRK memorabilia I had collected over the years. But finally I won my mother over."

'Khan' you believe it?

Producer SRK shows off his new find

2007 is the breakthrough year for new talent. And it's not just about oven-fresh faces.
Right now it's just a feeling but I'm getting more confident with every passing week. Yup, 2007 is the breakthrough year for new talent. And it's not just about oven-fresh faces. Actors with a track record are also re-inventing themselves for various reasons. Emraan Hashmi whose reputation as a chronic kisser precedes him, did away with the smooches and smacked a stunning performance in Awarapan. From Smita Patil in Arth to Kangana in Who Lamhe , Mahesh Bhatt's characters are creatures of the dark. His cinema always expects its protagonists to be casualties of their tortured souls. How the heck did Emraan Hashmi connect so deeply with the pain of his character? Isn't experience the only window to wisdom? Achcha chalo, Emraan had a troubled past. But could it be that we're finally entering a phase in our cinema where new talent is allowed a say in ways that go beyond teenybopper convention?

In a year that has had major box office disappointments, talent has finally flourished. Don't take my word for it. Just wait and watch. Watch Harman Baweja and Ranbir Kapoor glide across the screen on invisible roller skates. These young actors know their craft, and aren't guilty using it to excess. It took Akshay Kumar two dozen films to find his core as an actor , but some of the young actors and actresses today seem to take flight at the security check.

This cock-surity with which they arrive can be damaging. Star kids can turn into stark kids in the blink of an eye. Ruslaan Mumtaz and Anjori Alagh arrived quietly this year. They're here to stay. So unlike the noisy masala-filled arrival of Upen Patel last year, finally the huge helpings of that helium called hype only brings down the wannabe to no-gonnabe .

This is why I fear for Deepika Padukone. Those who have seen her rushes in Om Shanti Om (producer Shah Rukh Khan proudly shows off his new find to all and sundry on his laptop) swear the girl is here to 'sway' . She can dance, act and hold a shot. Wow, a star is born! But, hello, hello? Let her film be released before she's flooded with wah-wahs and offers. Don't let her burn out even before she has started.

But why is she constantly being featured in scandalous gossip? Why is she discussing her boyfriends, love life and other internal affairs in print so early on in her career when half the population don't know who she is, and the other-half don't care?

It's very exasperating when newcomers groomed for a very special brand of stardom let their mentors down by behaving wildly. In fact, major production houses are now thinking of re-structuring newcomers ' contracts. No late nights, no partying on week-days and maybe, no love life until the debut film is released. Sounds harsh and unrealistic? Maybe, but we must understand the movie business is no longer a random gamble. The stakes are sky-high and everybody wants to play it safe.

It may sound shocking. But nobody wants to invest crores in newcomers unless they happen to be Abhishek-Kareena or Ranbir-Sonam Kapoor. Forget the myth that starkids have it easy. Anupam and Kirron Kher's son Sikandar had to knock on doors like any other newcomer . And the fact that Ruslaan's mom is Anjana Mumtaz a prolific star-mom in movies didn't instantaneously endear him to the entire industry .

Some years ago the reclusive Vyjanthimala forced herself out of her shell to promote her son Suchindra Bali. It was sad to see a mythic actress who epitomised silent grace on screen, making herself accessible to every media-person in town.

Did it help Suchindra? Or Akshay Kumar's cousin Sachin who hung around him in the hope of finding some work. Poor cousin! Little did he know the ways of the film industry. Those who attain stardom are truly blessed. What's wrong with treating the debut vehicle like army training? Many newcomers are victims of the too-much-too-soon malady. Remember filmmaker Raj Kumar Kohli's son Arman or Manoj Kumar's son Rajiv Goswami?

Fast cars, affairs, that's not what makes a star. All of the above are very downmarket and self-defeating , in the long run. The tendency to announce one's

arrival through snippety snaps is damaging in the extreme. That's why I understand Subhash Ghai's determination to keep his new find Anurag Sinha under wraps. "Believe me he's a combination of Amitabh Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah," one of Sinha's senior co-stars told me. And then he added, "But don't write it. His head will get bloated ."

Now I know why. The wannabes want to run wild even before they are flagged off. They know they're being appraised and judged by people who want the status quo to remain - for their own gain.

Shahrukh Khan–n-Shirish Kunder present a desi version of 'The Mask'

Filed under: Joker — Shafiq Ahmed at 7:25 am on Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Bollywood earlier shared about Shirish Kunder's new project with SRK and now Bollywood have more news to share about his movie. The director is planning a desi-version of the famous Jim Carrey flick 'The Mask'.

The movie is titled 'Joker' and it's now confirmed news that Shahrukh will be seen in the main lead. Shirish is working with Hollywood technicians to finalize all the special effects for the movie. Shahrukh, who is currently shooting for 'Om Shanti Om', will next be shooting for a special appearance in 'Bhootnath' and once these projects are underway he plans to commence shooting for 'Joker'.

With Preity as Shirish's first choice, Shahrukh being inclined more towards casting Priyanka and Farah, who wants her debutante actress Deepika to bag another biggie, the female lead is yet to be finalized.

We are sure with these three strong contenders in the running, it sure will take a while till the 'Joker' finally reveals his 'Jaan-E-Maan'.

INTERVIEW

I don't know how to throw a tantrum

Deepika Padukone on hype, controversies and SRK

Harneet Singh

Are you aware that you are the most hyped newcomer around?
(Makes a face) Not really. Maybe when I read a stuff written about me, I feel that but it has nothing to do with me. I guess the hype is more because I'm already a known face as a model and because Farah Khan is launching me opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om (OSO).
You had a buffet of offers. Why did you decide on Om Shanti Om as your debut?
Yes, I got a lot of offers but I wasn't ready then. The time I was offered OSO was when I had decided to act. I had done quite a bit of modelling and wanted to give acting a try. That's when Farah approached me and I accepted. Today, I'm so glad that I waited since I could not have had a better debut. Farah and SRK have taken superb care of me. Farah treats me like her child.

Did you always want to be a Bollywood heroine?
I never wanted to be a Bollywood heroine. The thought never crossed my mind. As a child, I never stuck poses in front of the mirror. It slowly crept up on me as I started interacting with people and began discovering myself.

What was your perception of a Bollywood heroine?
For me, Bollywood meant buying a Rs 150 ticket and sitting in an air-conditioned theatre. I don't come from a film family. To me, a Bollywood heroine meant someone I see on the big screen, who is based in Mumbai and whom people attribute larger than life proportions.

And now?
Now I think that it's tough being a Bollywood heroine. You need to work really hard.

Has Shah Rukh Khan given you any tips?
(Laughs) Oh he has given me lots of tips , not just about acting but about what life is going to be all about when the film releases and also what life is all about.

Since its Farah's film, how hard did you rehearse to get the dance steps right?
Lots of rehearsals. Now it's for all of you to tell me how good or bad a dancer I'm. But I enjoy dancing.

Even though your first film is yet to be released, your name regularly crops up in controversies. Is it true that you kept producer Boney Kapoor waiting for over three hours at a screening for the Telugu film Pokhiri?
This is not true at all. It's a complete misunderstanding. I didn't keep anyone waiting. I've cleared it with Boneyji. We've spoken and he knows the reason why I couldn't do the film.

There is intense speculation about your love life. Who are you dating--Ranbir Kapoor or Nihar Pandya?
Ranbir is a part of my life. We are friends. Though Nihar and me were seeing each other at one point, we aren't anymore. But Nihar is still a friend.

So you're single?
(Laughs) Yeah, obviously.

Are you paired with Ranbir in Siddharth Anand's next film with Yash Raj Films?
I can't comment on any other film except Om Shanti Om at this point.

Are you prepared for the media glare in your personal life once your film releases?
It's already started. I'm 100 per cent prepared.

Industry buzz about you is that you're in the Aishwarya Rai mould. Comment.
(Gulps) It's great if they say so. Its fantastic for me. I've always looked up to Ash since the time she won the Miss World title. I've grown up watching her and I admire the way she has handled her career. I met her recently at a social event and she looked fabulous. I haven't had a conversation with her though.

Name a few actors that you admire.
I've grown up watching the Khans so they're on top of my list. I enjoy watching Karisma Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi and Kajol on screen.

Tell me the starriest thing you've done recently.
I'm so not like a star. I'm a very normal person. Even if I've thrown a tantrum it wasn't intentional. I mean, I don't even know how to throw a tantrum. I've come up the hard way so I appreciate all this. Also I'm used to stardom in the sense that my dad (badminton champ, Prakash Padukone) has also gone through it. At the end of the day, everyone is doing a job and the best way to conduct yourself in any field is to be a professional. That's what I believe in.

Shanti, shanti om!

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan has convinced Sanjay Bhansali that filmmakers should stand united and not be seen bickering over small things like release dates. So, both their films will release on November 9

Subhash K Jha

Shah Rukh Khan
It's finally decided. Talks of Shah Rukh Khan-Farah Khan's second collaborative film Om Shanti Om being shifted out of the much-coveted Diwali week, November 9, were indeed premature.

There were attempts to resolve the impending box-office bottleneck. Shah Rukh Khan apparently rang up Sanjay Bhansali before his London vacation. And they both agreed there was no need for a confrontational situation. Our source says SRK apparently reasoned with Bhansali that filmmakers should present a united stand and not be seen haggling over small things like release dates, etc, before the world in general and the press in particular. Everyone's in the same boat here, he's supposed to have said, and no one in Bollywood is working against the other. In other words, he convinced Bhansali that Bollywood is one big happy family.

Since it's unanimously felt that Om Shanti Om is a "very Diwali kind of film" the makers have decided to go ahead with the release, although it clashes with one of the most important films of the year…. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya. That comes with the formidable image of a celluloid creator who has delivered three multiple award-winning blockbusters in a row.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali
However, Shah Rukh has reason to put his film out for Diwali. In the last two years, he has had two hits for Diwali. In 2005 Diwali he had Veer-Zara. In 2006 there was Don. And the biggest hit of SRK's career Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was also released for Diwali.

The people behind Saawariya are unfazed. Says a spokesperson, "Gone are the days of single-theatre releases when one or the other film cornered the entire chain of good theatres leaving other releases with no choice but to back down or release in inferior theatres. Now with the multiplexes there can be many releases. And none of the releases need to suffer. Saawariya will release on schedule. I'm sure audiences will go to see both the films."

Shah Rukh Khan : The Ultimate Icon

An excerpt from A Guide to Indian Movie Stars

India is a massive, crowded country of hustle and grind. With so many people, competitive drive isn't just inevitable, it's admirable. Indian audiences look up to stars who they believe exemplify the rugged warrior virtues that spell success: lithe, statuesque Amitabh Bachan, brawny Sanjay Dutt, or Salman Khan. It's rare that someone comes along who represents the average Indian, and is loved for it. India doesn't usually have the wistful admiration for the reticent, yearning everyman. But if the country had their own versions of Jimmy Stewart and Gary Cooper, they'd probably be very close to Dilip Kumar, Naseeruddin Shah, and Shahrukh Khan.

Shahrukh Khan's reputation precedes him.
He's huge.
His celebrity is at level with Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor at the time of their Andy Warhol silkscreen portraits: movie actor as cultural icon.
Swarms of people gather at his shows, his movies, and whenever he is hosting an event.
How did someone whose appeal is that he's an accessible, everyguy grow into a superstar? Something similar happened to Tom Hanks, yet few people want to mob him when he's in public.
People have to be literally restrained when Shahrukh walks by, and not just teens, but middle-aged women and men as well.
Shahrukh's movies in the late '80s and early '90s had him as an awkward, yearning teen. Early on he showed great range in playing both heroes and villains. His relentless stalker in Yash Chopra's Darr (1993) was a disarmingly poignant portrayal of a morally repugnant character, not unlike Peter Lorre's child-murderer in M.

His affability and gift for musical performance shot him up the ranks to being one of the most versatile, bankable actors. In 1998, two movies made him the most popular star in Indian commercial cinema, the deliriously inane, but wildly popular Badshaah and Karan Johar's endearingly schmaltzy Parent Trap send-up, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
His popularity grew, and in recent years he's shown a gift for nuanced acting in films like Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Swades (2004) and Don (2005).
He's one of India's most well-rounded stars, a thoughtful actor as well as a great dancer and performer, but most important, he's someone Indians identify with intimately; he could be the teasing neighbor, or the winsome cousin, or a protective brother.
Watching him talk to his awe-struck fans on the game show he hosts on his off-season from making movies, Kaun Banega Crorepati (the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? ) is really quite amazing: he's unusually giving and open for someone so famous, and the audience responds with unabashed enthusiasm and gratitude. In spite of all Shahrukh's celebrity, he's never forgotten from where he came.

Media frenzy over Shah Rukh!

Shah Rukh Khan gets mobbed by the shutterbugs and fans during the music launch of film 'Jai Jagannath'.

It is not always easy to be loved and mobbed by the media and fans. Shah Rukh Khan learned it the hard way, when his arrival for the launch of a film caused a glass door to break over both fans and media alike.

The price of being a celebrity can certainly be overwhelming sometimes, as the Bollywood 'King Khan' learnt the hard way on the occasion of the music launch of the mythological film "Jai Jagannath'. Khan and director Mani Ratnam were the guests of honor at the event.

A routine music release it was - till the King Khan arrived and the media struggled for one glimpse of the man! First it was crowds jumping on each other, and then a glass door that shattered all over leaving King Khan with mild bruises. But taking it all in good spirit, Shah Rukh said that it was but an example of people's love. What's a glass door?

"The media's overtures are always like this - in fact, their love is not complete without some shattered glass thrown in for good measure. So thank you, that you all love me so much. May buildings and monuments crumble next time," said Khan flashing that dimple, and assured everyone that he wasn't hurt. "I have been abroad for a month, so I guess the people really missed me," he added sheepishly.

We might miss him, we might not - but whenever he's around, he sure does leave a mark!

-------------------------------------------------

Shahrukh Khan arrived at a multiplex in a suburban area to attend the music launch of the film Jai Jaganath. There were huge crowds gathered at the multiplex waiting to catch a glimpse of the star. In the usual fan mayhem, a glass door close to SRK gave way and shattered spraying the actor with fine glass shards. Although SRK was not gravely injured he did receive a few cuts. But the management immediately helped SRK and provided him with ice for his cuts. However SRK is fine and such a minor incident can barely deter the man. He later also gave autographs and posed for a few pictures.
