dev is just an ill-sketched complication that really doesn't add anything to the story. there is very little i agree with sakshi G on but dear lord dev and suchitra give me diabetes. durga becomes annoying when it comes to dev, she looses her sharpness and is overwhelmed quite easily. he's also the biggest fool alive. if he knows that the court verdict was false, then why try dissuade durga from marrying shaurya rather than confronting shaurya or his family about it. he realizes that everyone around him is evil but theres no reaction. i hate bystanders more than evil-doers. he has money and power, but its all wasted with a fool like him. this was a solid story that was never intended for a trp audience. it was always suppose to be shaurya and durga's love/hate story. he was suppose to fall in love/lust with her and she was to destroy him. that story brought in enough attention from trp audience. our public has evolved. you don't need such cheap gimmicks as this useless character to bring in trp. so what if people wanted shaurya durga? you can't give in to every crazy demand, can you?
i was reading this novel (i think swedish but an english translation) about 3 or 4 years ago, a revenge story...cant really remember the name but was a really great and creepy story. it kind of embodied that not even the most righteous of wars leave its perpetrators unscathed. this girl traps the rapist of dead her friend or sister or someone related to her in this love web. he's a total psycho (like a genuine sociopath like shaurya, can't think beyond the object of his desire, didn't love anyone, not even his family) but was first obsessed with his wife which got to the point where he could genuinely die for her and kill for her and 'loved' her like crazy. his wife also began to develop a soft corner for him cos of his devotion to her (some strange form of stockholm syndrome) but remained resolute to punish him and ended up driving him to a vegetable like state by slowly poisoning him and making him confess. the story ends on a sad note cos the wife is unable to walk away from her experience unscathed as discovers that her husband had messed with her contraception and she was pregnant and couldn't decide whether she hated that or was glad that justice had left her with something. we never find out what she decides on with the pregnancy except that she thinks about the pros and cons sitting next to her vegetable husband in an assylum. it was quite interesting cos it dealt with some very dark and complex human emotions. the anti-hero was disarmingly charming like shaurya but as the story goes on you kind of develop this strange attachment to the devil yet feel revolted by it, like the protagonist. i first thought EHT was an adaptation of that novel but probably way too risky and non-pg for hindi soap content. but an indian interpretation wouldve been interesting to watch.
they are simply taking the easy route with dev. it'll be very boring to see durga get out of this unscathed and living happily ever after with dev. she's righteous but revenge can never leave you untouched. it chars your soul and leaves you unable to set sail into the sunset with a fool. in the recently ended show mahabharat, vasudev had told draupadi- 'war, no matter how righteous, only brings about destruction, how did you think it would only bring happiness and glory for you sakhi? we must fight non-the-less as it is the right thing to do.' i think the marriage track was always going to happen, how else would durga have punished shaurya? but dev doesn't really add any depth to the story.
