Its not only the law but the makers and the enforcers who has to be efficient. Its just like you are starving because you have a locked refrigerator with all delicious food inside.
Its goes for every other problem in India. People die out of starvation but why ? We are exporting food items which proves we have surplus production. Why are we starving infirst place ? THat is because we don't have enough infrastructure to preserve it. Farms are destroyed due to floods or grains rot due to absence of proper storage.
Just imagine Assam, a state which receives 8 months of rainfall, has the largest river and is blessed with springs everywhere is struggling with water scarcity. What a joke.
Same problem goes with this anti rape laws or laws for protection of women. When a case is reported the victim has to run pillar to post to get justice. Rape victims are different from other victims. They lose confidence and remain physically and mentally handcuffed to fight their tormentors who obviously become more powerful .When they are humiliated in the name of protocols and procedure, they lose heart and eventually back off.
It reminds me of a case where a rape victim was repeatedly raped and later burnt to death because of the negligent behaviour of the authorities. Why protection to rape victim is not necessary ? In another such case which happened in UP a police officer questioned rape victim's accusation by saying how can a mother of two children be raped ?
But still I would not blame the legal system alone. I can't blame the law makers either. They are not aliens but a part of the society we are part of. They reflect the mindset of the society which has restrictions over such victims. On the other hand, women in general get used to everything in life quite easily. This theory has been applied to every other serial on Indian television. They tend to forgive quite easily. To all such women who think forgiving is the answer to all problems, I wish to quote Dinkar's poem, 'Shakti aur Shama'
Shama shobti us bhujang ko
jiske pass Garal (ho
usko kya jo danthin ,
Vishrahit, VInit saral ho...
Mere going out for a rally and protesting against the Government is not enough. We need to say," Ab bas" with more conviction and power. Every daughter is a daughter. Every woman is a woman. IF you disrespect one, you disrespect womanhood as a whole.
