The issues we seem to have addressed are--
1. Are controversies real or engineered for TRPs.
They are mostly real but minor issues which are spiced up (often beyond recognition) by the channel.
2. Are controversies necessary for TRPs?
Because there is so much competition among the reality shows these days, controversies cannot be avoided altogether, since it is undeniable that a large number of people like controversies. However, too much controversies may result in people losing interest in the singing etc, so when the controversies become slightly less, peoples interest in the program may also die down, and that would affect the TRPs adversely. So a little bit of controversy, within limits, is okay, but not at the expense of the singing.
3. Are controversies just good entertainment or can they have negative consequences for the people participating in the show?
They do affect the chances of the candidates because people vote for personalities not just the singing capabilities. Non-controversial candidates are at a disadvantage in the beginning because they are relatively unknown than the others and may not get much support. On the other hand, controversial candidates have less chance in the final stages because then people may choose a non-controversial candidate over a controversial one. Since most controversies are very minor to begin with, it seems unfair that they should affect the contestants chances in this way.
