Abhay, I checked all the pages. These are some valuable and interesting information you have provided. This research makes me more eager come to India to visit these places. Thank you for effort and time as usual. 🤗Thank you so much Abhay. You are indeed of a gem for this forum for us to have all this information , and bring it back from the dust from history chronicles. Same goes to Komal and Lizzy. You trio are quiet combo...Three Musketeers..😆

For Indu Sundarshen people who have read her book, I hope this cleared a lot of confusions.I am gonna irk her until she gives me a reply on Ruqaiya until she replies. 😆

👏
Akbar respected women and gave them important positions in his life and at court. His life was filled with strong women - his mother, MA, Ruq, MUZ. His sister and his daughters were his weaknesses.

If he could give the MUZ the right to issue farmans and a terrific cavalry and make noblemen present her with nazranas and let her run the Haj shipping business then we shouldn't be surprised to see women in the paintings.

The miniature paintings are terrific - so much detail in them.

Akbar was really ahead of his time in terms of respect for women and I think all feminists should applaud him for this 😆

First of all, thanks for the post and the pictures Abhay.
1. Does the presence of ladies in the portraits speaks something of women's position in that era ?
If Akbar abolished forced Sati, took steps to prevent female infanticide and insisted of the agreement of the bride as well for marriage and set an age bar for the welfare of women, his respect for women is so clear.
Such broadmindedness is the mark of great men. You might know of Raja Raja Chola who ruled 500 years before Akbar, who took the advice of his elder sister on all matters of political importance from his elder sister inspite of being a shrewd king himself. These men were centuries beyond their times, more forward thinking than even the present day men.
You have mentioned the names of so many important women in the Mughal history and the rest of India history of that time which clearly proves their importance. Women were present in the court and their opinions considered. The presence of women in the painting (I think there are 3?) clearly shows that they are a part of administration. If they had the rights to oversee the spoils of the war it by itself is a proof that they were politically active.
Contrary to popular belief, India has always been more respectful to women than the west in history and their talents have been better appreciated.

2. Also, about the expertise of the painters of those times, that in an illustration of a size comparable to 20x30 cms, they could display such fine scenes, with delicate details.??..👏

Marvellous. Simply Marvelous. They say that Da Vinci embedded so many secrets and codes and information in his paintings. These paintings that you have posted too reveal so much about the lifestyle, dressing, events, practices and attitudes in that era. To a more observant viewer who knows history better, these paintings may tell stories.

3. Would also like to hear about the destruction / losses of historical treasures at the hands of various agencies..?.?..

The most unfortunate thing!!!!
When Akbar/Hk's own great grandson could destroy details, what can be said of others. From the Kohinoor, so much has been looted and destroyed for selfish reasons. National Pride was a lost commodity under the British rule who made the Indians feel that they were scum and their history was nothing to feel proud of. (Incidentally, when the west was leading a nomadic life still, we in India led a civilised life, had universities and created literature that are relevant even today.) It is only recently that attitudes are changing and the need to preserve the historical treasures is felt. Political red-tapism is a deterrent now.

4. Also, regarding the fight on boats.?? This was interesting.

North India is a landlocked region. Gujarat and Bengal are the only regions that have coastlines. So a strong navy might not have been an utmost necessity and the Mughal Army compensated for any shortcoming on water. Yet it is interesting to note that Akbar tried his hand in this too.

Excellent post.

Short of time. Will post a detailed response later. Regarding the questions

1. Mahamanga held an important post. You have alraedy mentioned MH's sister. Wasn't his mother Mahachuchak begum also a very active participant in Kabul's politics. Queen Elizabeth I was the ruler of England at that time. Akbar maintained a cordial relationship with her. To me this says a lot about the importance of women in Mughal politics during Akbar's time. But of course, it was 16th century...but then, we are in 21st century and USA is still waiting to have a woman president...not that there are no deserving candidates( best if I dont get started on this).

2. It will be unfair to comment on the paintings without seeing the originals. I have had the pleasure of visiting the famous Art Museum in Washington DC. Breathtaking work from the same century..mostly European. Anyone here into impressionist art?

3. Yes please

4. I have read a little bit on this. The Portuguese and Ottomans. Will comment in a later post.

Good work Abhay. Wish I had more time. Hopefully next week. Love your posts!
Thanks!

Welcome..😊
Wil reply point wise.

Point 1
Though, you have mentioned Maham Anga, Mahchuchak Begum, and Mirza Hakim's sister, and Queen Elizabeth here.

I would add one name here. 😃

The Oxford Encyclopedia Of Women in World History, Vol-4, Page-656, notes the name of Hk/Jodha/MUZ as an influential wife in Akbar's life, who exemplified his religious tolerance and also in shaping many POLICIES in the Mughal Empire.😊

Point 2

Yes, in a previous comment i mentioned the same thing that, regarding comparison of the miniatures. Link .

Point 3

So, you do agree regarding the loss of our historical treasures.?.😊

Point 4

For this point i will wait. 😊 This is interesting. I got some recent interesting highlights regarding the naval warfare involving Japanese 'iron ships' (1578) and Korean 'turtle ships'(1590's). The English fleet's tussle with the Spanish Armada.🥱. And, Italian and Ottoman warships in East Mediterranean.
After reading all this, i feel, the trade requirements and the location of the Western empires was also responsible for development of a strong Navy there.😊

Image 3 , the one which depicts women in the windows watching and Akbar receiving the spoils of the war,is it not possible that these women are not the Mughal women but instead are wife's or family of the Uzbeks who lost the fight.

Reason : Akbar himself is still sitting outside the fort of Jaunpur, the spoils are being brought out from the fort gates and the women seem to be inside the fort, why would the Mughal women be inside the fort when Akbar has encamped near the fort and if the Mughals have occupied the fort then why would Akbar be using the make shift tent instead of some solid structure inside the fort.

unless the top portion of the miniature is reflecting Agra, which is also possible as in some miniature they have put together a couple of scenes or sequence of events together .

By this I am not at all contesting that women in the Mughal era were given importance , infact if you go by EK serial Akbar is spending 80% of his time surrounded and advised and bullied ( ok not always ) by them.😆
