I was recently watching the original video interview of Aamir Khan (link here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5zRxtXc27s) where he talks about his multiplier theory.
Some interesting things he said:
-He did talk about 3 Idiots multiplying it's weekend collections of 40 crores by 5 to get total collections 202 crores. So he said a multiplier of 5 means the film is mind-blowing.
-He then said if the same film that got 200 crore total collections got to 200 by doing a weekend of 100 crore, then multiplier is only 2 which is not good and indicates ki public ko maaza nahin aaya (public didn't enjoy the film). It seemed as if perhaps he was taking a dig at Chennai Express, which had a 100 crore opening weekend and did total collections of 227 crores, meaning a multiplier of 2.27.
-He then talked about Kahaani (even though both him and the interview got the lifetime figure of Kahaani wrong by saying it was around 90 crores 😆) but he talked about the multiplier of that film. He told the interviewer to calculate it and that it shows the film was well-loved. (If we calculate Kahaani's multiplier using Bollywood Hungama figures, it's a multiplier of 3.73).
And he said this about the multipliers:
2 means that the film is not good
3 means the film is good
3.5 means very good
4 is very very good
4.5 he said was amazing or something
and 5 is mind-blowing i think he said
Although he did emphasize "the first three days of a film" a few times, he didn't mention how to use this theory for films with extended opening long weekends (4 day weekends, 5 day weekends, 6 day weekends, etc)
