Hilly, great analysis...
And some of it you hit the nail right in the head.
See, the serial watchers in India still are largely the house wives. LArgely the women watch serials and men watch sports and news. Much like in the West. So, see a teleserial caters to women folks in general. Not only that their sentiments also need appeasement, So, we have serial like housewife etc. - glorification of women who stays women. Consequently, women who are office workers are looked down and taken with a pinch of salt., eg; Varsha. See how the office environment is bad and independent women aren't good. Again, a justification shown to appease the crowd. Also, see women like Archana and Purvi always either with their spouse or with their boss. Even if that behavior is outright wrong and in real setting will get them fired. Can a real life Purvi survive in Corporate world? Dream on. Same with, the rich and poor equation. One has to remember, Capitalism was only introduced in India in the early '90s. So, Rich people are bad, lacking sanskars and Rich Kids, oh mine - devil incarnated and need to be taught Sans kaar lessons by middle class Sanskaari girls. Notice, Middle Class is epitomized and glorified to a point that becomes unbelievable. Same with Foreign vs. Desi Kids. Desi Kids are always good and sanskaari - sometimes, you wander if India do venture outside India yet. But, they do - limited in number and always are much more educated (so either for education or economically strong to afford vacationing outside India) or as parents of highly educated kids. But, even then, these numbers are so limited, that any PH can get away just exploiting the same age old sentiments into so called new storylines. Actually, now even we really take a closer, the storyline and also characters are all same too - just to a different degree.PR is just no different - the same glorification of poverty is shown, the same prejudice against foreign ppl are entertained.
So, PR2 was in a sense an exact replicate of PR1 - women in middle class are sanskaari ones, sacrificing for the well being of the family. This is also a middle class sentiment, where women do have to sacrifice a lot, esp. in a joint setting. Although, I do understand the reasons, why PR 1 was a hit, I always question, whether the extend of moral degradation is being shown, especially, who are considered noble and carrier of dharohar (legacy) of Sanskar, will be palatable to middle class audience, who pride is their education, character and Sanskar (remember, they think they are the best) and are the reason why Indian Culture is still intact. So, I am very eager to see, how the tracts goes now. I don't think that Ovi was ever considered good, because she is rich. But the "good' Purvi in a premarital sex, swapping babies, marrying with Jeeju - not to mention, her not roughing it out with Onir. For to an average Indian - nothing is greater than Sacrifice, Duty and honor...let us wait and see. This has almost become an interesting case study and whatever the result will be, it will be an eye-opener for me...

agree completelywe r to be blamed as we watch thisso long as we watch , they will showto keep chemistry of some sort on screen they go on butchering the grey charactersthe villains r used to fuel the love storiesthe grey characters r developed or butchered along the waySavita , Ovi , Soham r the grey charactersthey will get shades as and when CVs feel fitthe leads NEVER lead a normal life . Seperation is always there . Consummation is shown rarely or only once coz it is the biggest hook to the showThe formula is , get the viewers hooked ,then seperate them , then keep the carrot dangling and when channel tells to wind up , suddenly and hurriedly unite them or kill them off .the formula also is flattering the ego of the women viewers . They r the majority of the viewership . So wooing is shown , putting men in places is shown , sass is appreciated as spirit , apologies from men only r shown , men giving various tests r shown , pampering women in the name of romance is shown .The ego gets a high coz it never happens in real life . If in real life a woman does a case on her husband and tries to destroy his financial credibility she will NEVER be accepted back again . If a girl dumps a guy on his wedding day at the altar the guy will be incensed and never see her face again . But this femdom [ pardon me ] is sold coz women like to see their own in power .So hilly , you r spot on .
Oh kool, so true...all tactics are just to hold on the crowd as long as possible. Besides, without drama what will the middle class do, esp. the housewives - how will they escape their routine lives. So, all is catered towards their appeasement of women folks. Even them winning every time over men- rich or poor, is an appeasement of that fantasy that never materializes in the real world. So, men always bow down - the tele serials in a way provide the middle class with the power, they never have - but always dream of...Yes, a fairy tale acted for their pleasure only and only caters that fan their fantasy...
Thanks Hilly, I am glad. But India is changing and I not necessarily think that change is bad. A country that was under the foreign rule for 6 + years, Starting with the Moghuls mainly, has lost a lot of time. So, India like rest of the world is furiously coping the West, in all walks of life. Besides, I truly and proudly believe India has so much to offer to the world. At one point, India was only referred is terms of spirituality and self realization. That is changing as well. My only hope is that India can really copy the good things that the West offer - work commitment, works ethics. The West also has a lot too offer too, to India.
But getting back, Indai has to struggle a lot post independence – and the majority of people that form the then Indian populations were either below the poverty line, having lost it all to a century old independence war, and immigration due to partition. People struggled and what did they have during those dark, hard days – their Sanskaar, their value system, their immense pride about themselves, their patriotism towards their country, honor, pride and a sense of duty.
I will never say premarital sex never happened. But if it happened, then the Girl could have been promptly married off to that guy or to any other guy through an arranged marriage. Or an abortion was the option. In this regard, I am curious how the demographics have changed. I haven't seen any statistics yet that they are unmarried girls bringing up a kid as a result of unprotected sex without marriage. I really am very interested to see. Even a real life example could be so helpful- an example I could refer too. The old real life example I know of Neena Gupta and Masaba Gupta. I could also like to see data of how open the public is to such pregnancies and kids. These are major issues that changes societies. But, I have only heard it happens.
You know a long time back there was a serial in Doordarshan that should pregnancy out of wedlock. The Hero fell in love with the girl, got her pregnant, but for some reason ended up marrying someone else. This girl couldn't abort for whatever reason gave birth and herself became a Sanyasini. The serial name was Buniyaad. Even in movies, such pregnancies only led to prostitutions. Not necessarily, this is a good or a healthy outcome of an act of young inexperienced people. I definitely could like to see a change in acceptance with a solid education of pros and cons of teenage pregnancies and premarital sex. But, is India even open to talk about such serious issues, let alone acceptance of such things??
Oh Hilly, I totally agree with you that there are many perils of premarital sex especially in women who are teenagers and are economically dependent to someone else. I have seen it up close in the West. Even when one is earning, she gets preggo, the man can just walk out saying he doesn't want that responsibility. It happen to my colleague and in her case, the stress wasn't money, but being a first time mom – it is no cake walk taking care of kids all alone. The mental stress plus balancing work/life becomes a huge challenge, and work becomes important to just put that bread on the table.
See PR did show reality of unwed pregnancy in case of Shravani. But, see since she wasn't the Trinity, she faced what an average Indian faces in such a situation….and I also remember the bashing she got from the forum for her one unsanskari act😆…my, how the table turned 😆😆
