I am rather late to this backless choli party

Most of the characters, specially the women, are dressed inappropriately. But this fixation with Purvi's blouses is kind of fascinating to me. Anything that character does, wears, says is a matter of intense criticism without considering that everything else about this show is totally without logic.

And this constant jhaap (another favorite word of this forum along with Kaand) - of the red light area - makes no sense either. So, Savita visits the area too does she?

Lets look at the facts.

1. Teju's outfits - Do any of you know of anyone in real life who dresses like that?? Very unattractive choice.

2. Ovi's clothes - Sure she has grown up in Canada, but my dear, I live in US and have lived in Canada. How many girls do you know who where short dresses and spaghetti straps on a daily basis? Daily attire except for business is jeans and Ts. Shorts in the summer, mainly. And most folks I know, dress differently when they go back to India, I know I do. Not because I care what others think but I love to wear sarees and I do not get the chance here.

3. Archana's clothes - She sure looked good but certainly not the middle class woman she was portraying.

So, why single out Purvi?

Now, I think Ovi's clothes will attract more attention than Purvi's. I think no one will look past the god awful sarees that Purvi sports. But I will criticize neither for their choice of clothes - everyone should dress the way they feel comfortable. Some can face the stares. Others cannot and want the anonymity. Neither is wrong.

And someone needs to enlighten me on the relationship between "sanskaar" (whatever that may mean) and clothing or lack thereof.

whats the problem in wearing a backless blouse...the current generation ppl will wear this kind of blouse
n its a trend among younger generation ppl to wear backless blouse
since pr has taken a generation leap...it has younger generation ppl...
so whats wrong if purvi wears backless blouse...😕😕

n the matter of purvi speaking abt sanskaars...

she speaks about sanskaars bcoz archu has thot her...
but ovi is biological daughter of archu
so why was she wearing those short skirts during her pregnancy... n especially heels which is strictly restricted for pregoo women😕🤔

pallavi di thanks 4 opening this thread...

Shymala dear, I know, have read a lot of English lit. myself. And that little philosophy (that I firmly believe in) can be applied to many things in life...what is hidden is more endearing than what is openly visible 😉

Thanks a lot, my dear Kalapi.

You know, the part @ blue is 100% true. In Victorian times, one is told that gentlemen used to look out for a glimpse of a woman's well turned ankle, for it was only rarely seen from among all those voluminous petticoats! Nowadays, no one probably even looks at ample skin shows, for they have become commonplace.

My take

I don't say she should not wear those blouses because they are indecent or not worn by women as a regular fashion today

these r NOT my reasons

my reason is it is NOT in keeping with the character

what is her character

a simple middle class maharashtrian girl

They may be dressing up this way for a party occasionally

but they do not wear it on a regular basis when they go to markets or vaccinating their babies or in chawls

I don't know why to justify her backless blouses it is made into a cultural issue

Rajasthani women may be wearing and in some parts of India women may be choli less too , point is Purvi does NOT live in Rajasthan

nor does she live in parts of rural India where women r choli less

she lives in Dombivli , Mumbai , Maharashtra where middle class girls from chawls DON'T wear these types on regular basis

if anyone says yes they wear i have seen etc i will strongly disagree as the Mumbai i visit and the Dombivli i visit to meet my reloatives does NOT show this picture

so i will go by what i see and experience

just as choli less women in rural india or rajasthani women will stare at a woman in mini skirts or jeans so will Purvi be stared at if she wears those blouses and shows that much back in Dombivli markets

it will look funny and odd and invite stares

So according to me it is not a culture thing at all

neither is it a sexist thing ...that should women stop wearing this and that coz men stare etc

neither is it a decent or indecent thing

for me its simply a practical thing .

Look at her character

a girl who wore salwar khameezes not even jeans

later switched to bengali sarees after marraige

then once more shifted to Mumbai and changed to Mumbai mode of dressing

nobody will say anything if she dresses up like this for DK's party

but definetely she will invite whistles and comments if she haggles with Bhaji wallahs wearing those blouses and shows so much back .

Now regarding Ovi wearing western clothes

her character is a girl from Canada , dressing that way . She was and is a model . Purvi is not and i feel her dressing is strange and not in keeping with the character .

So acc to me it is not Ovi vs Purvi , decent vs indecent , culture vs cultureless at all . It simply has to do with the character . Neither r western clothes indecent nor indian clothes , its what is appropriate in which place , thats all .

@koolsadhu

Characters in serials are never dressed up like people do in real life. There is always some improvisation. It is a serial after all!

Who sits at home wearing heavy jewellery?

How many moms dress up trendier than their daughters than Archana did?

I get the feeling that this whole argument is not about Purvi and her dressing at all - it is all about Shruti being the lead and not Asha.

Because if you start with that premise than you will not find ANYTHING acceptable in what Purvi/Asha does.

I have a maid who, to the best of my knowledge, lives in a chawl. Her husband is a tailor. She wears incredibly fancy blouses which are really deep cut at the back. Hr husband stitches them for her. She is in fact quite obese but has no qualms showing off her not so perfect back, All I say is, more power to her! Visual aesthetics again is purely personal, I personally find extremely bright and shimmery clothes unappealing. While I would not wear such clothes, I can't possibly comment on the visual aesthetics or lack of it in those who wear them, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. if backless blouses and bright colours are what appeal to some, more power to them!

So, what if Purvi is middle-class? Whoever says middle-class women wear veils or are covered up from head to toe? One only has to travel by the locals in Mumbai to know what middle-class women dress like! If low cut blouses and transparent sarees are a reflection of lack of sanskaars, I think we are a nation of sanskaar-less women 😆.

Purvi, you go girl! Wear backless blouses and micro minis if it pleases you! Your body, your right! No one has the right to take that away from you! Nor from any other woman, fictional or otherwise!
