The much anticipated sequel to Vijay Deverakonda’s 2025 film Kingdom has officially been shelved. Producer Naga Vamsi confirmed the news in an interview with Idlebrain, choosing not to dwell on the reasons behind the original film’s underwhelming box office performance.
When asked about Kingdom 2, Vamsi said simply, “No, we are not making it anymore.” On whether the first film might have worked better as a standalone, he added, “There is no point in talking about what happened because it’ll only hurt Gowtam. There’s nothing more to do now.” The producer, however, made it clear that he intends to work with director Gowtam Tinnanuri again, revealing that the filmmaker is already developing a “different kind of film.”
Kingdom was released in theatres in July 2025 at a point when Vijay Deverakonda was seeking a significant box office success to regain momentum after his career slowdown post the 2022 release of Liger. Despite the hype leading up to its release, Kingdom earned just ?82 crore worldwide. Critics offered mixed responses, and the film’s performance did little to reverse the actor’s declining commercial run.
The film starred Vijay as Suri, a constable who becomes a reluctant spy and goes undercover in Sri Lanka to infiltrate a criminal gang. Supporting actors included Satyadev, Venkitesh, and Bhagyashri Borse. Kingdom concluded with a cliffhanger, with Suri experiencing a deeply emotional event that was meant to set up the sequel.
Before Kingdom, Vijay appeared in The Family Star in 2024 and made a cameo in Kalki 2898 AD. Looking ahead, he will be seen in Rowdy Janardhana, directed by Ravi Kiran Kola. The film’s first glimpse shows him in an intense avatar, covered in blood and dressed in a lungi, hinting at a raw and action driven narrative.
While Kingdom 2 will no longer move forward, Vijay continues to pursue projects that explore varied roles and genres. Both the actor and his collaborators appear focused on exploring fresh narratives rather than revisiting the first film’s storyline.
